1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: 10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? 23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. 24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way, 31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. 32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, 34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. 36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. 37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. 38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. 40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. 42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. 43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. 44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

Jesus frestas av djävulen

1 När Jesus återvände från Jordanfloden var han fylld av Guds heliga Ande, och Anden förde honom ut i ödemarken. 2 Där frestades han av djävulen under 40 dagar. Under hela den tiden åt han ingenting, och han blev till slut hungrig. 3 Då sa djävulen till honom: ”Gör bröd av de här stenarna, om du nu är Guds Son!” 4 Men Jesus svarade: ”Nej! Det står i Skriften*: ’Människan lever inte bara av bröd.*’ ” 5 Då förde djävulen honom högt upp och lät honom i ett ögonblick se alla länder i världen 6 och sa: ”Jag ska ge dig makten över världen och över all den härlighet som finns där, för allt detta är mitt och jag kan ge det till vem jag vill. 7 Om du bara faller ner och tillber mig ska det bli ditt.” 8 Jesus svarade: ”Det står i Skriften: ’Det är Herren, din Gud, du ska tillbe, och bara honom du ska tjäna.*’ ” 9 Då tog djävulen honom med till Jerusalem och ställde honom högst upp på tempelmuren och sa: ”Hoppa ner, om du nu är Guds Son! 10 Det står ju i Skriften: ’Gud ska befalla sina änglar att skydda dig. 11 De ska bära dig på sina händer, så att du inte skadar dig mot någon sten.*’ ” 12 Men Jesus svarade: ”Det står också i Skriften: ’Du ska inte sätta Herren, din Gud, på prov.*’ ” 13 Och när djävulen hade frestat honom på alla sätt, lämnade han honom sedan ifred under en tid.

Jesus talar till folket i Galileen

14 Efter detta återvände Jesus till Galileen fylld av Guds Andes kraft, och snart talade man om honom överallt. 15 Han undervisade i synagogorna* och alla hyllade honom.

Människorna i Nasaret vägrar att tro

16 När han kom till Nasaret, den stad där han växt upp, gick han som vanligt till synagogan* när det blev vilodag*. Och då han reste sig upp för att läsa från Skriften*, 17 räckte man honom profeten Jesajas bok. Han öppnade den och hittade det ställe där det står: 18 ”Herrens Ande är över mig, för han har utvalt mig att ge ett glädjebud till de fattiga. Han har sänt mig att proklamera frihet för de fångna, att ge de blinda sin syn, att befria de förtryckta 19 och ropa ut en räddningens tid från Herren.”* 20 Han la sedan ihop boken och lämnade den till tjänaren och satte sig ner för att undervisa. Alla i synagogan hade sina blickar vända mot honom och väntade med spänning på vad han skulle säga. 21 Då förklarade han för dem: ”Idag har det här stället i Skriften blivit verklighet, mitt framför era egna ögon.” 22 Och alla som lyssnade talade väl om honom och förvånades över hans underbara ord. ”Hur kan detta komma sig?” sa de till varandra. ”Det är ju bara Josefs son.” 23 Då sa han till dem: ”Snart påminner ni mig säkert om ordspråket: ’Läkare, bota dig själv!’ och säger till mig: ’Gör samma under här i din hemstad, som vi har hört att du gjort i Kafarnaum.’ ” 24 Och han fortsatte: ”Jag är väl medveten om att ingen profet som framför Guds budskap blir accepterad i sin egen hemstad. 25 Tänk på profeten Elia. Jag försäkrar er, att det fanns många judiska änkor som behövde hjälp på hans tid, för det hade inte regnat på tre och ett halvt år och det var svår hungersnöd i landet. 26 Men Elia blev inte sänd till någon av dem, utan fick hjälpa en änka i Sarefat nära Sidon*.* 27 Tänk också på profeten Elisha, som botade syriern Naaman, trots att det fanns så många judiska spetälska som behövde hjälp.*” 28 Människorna i synagogan blev rasande när de hörde detta. 29 De rusade upp och drev Jesus ut ur staden, ända till kanten av det berg som staden var byggd på, och tänkte knuffa honom utför klippan. 30 Men han gick rakt igenom folkhopen och lämnade dem.

Jesus undervisar med makt

31 Sedan kom Jesus till Kafarnaum i Galileen och där undervisade han folket i synagogan* på vilodagen*. 32 De var mycket häpna över hans undervisning, för han talade med makt och myndighet. 33 I synagogan fanns den här dagen en man som var besatt av en ond ande, och han började ropa: 34 ”Vad har du med oss att göra, Jesus från Nasaret? Har du kommit för att ta död på oss? Jag vet vem du är, du Guds heliga tjänare!” 35 Men Jesus sa strängt till den onda anden: ”Tig! Far ut ur honom!” Och den onda anden kastade mannen till golvet inför allas ögon och for sedan ut ur honom utan att skada honom. 36 Människorna i synagogan blev alldeles förskräckta och började diskutera mellan sig: ”Vad är det med den här mannens ord? Vilken makt och myndighet! Han befaller de onda andarna att lämna sina offer, och genast far de ut.” 37 Och ryktet om honom spred sig som en löpeld i hela trakten.

Jesus botar Simons svärmor och många andra

38 Sedan lämnade Jesus synagogan* och gick hem till Simon. Men Simons svärmor låg sjuk i hög feber, och alla bad att Jesus skulle bota henne. 39 Då gick han fram, lutade sig ner över henne och beordrade febern att lämna henne. Och genast blev hon feberfri, och hon steg upp och började laga mat åt dem. 40 På kvällen, när solen höll på att gå ner, kom alla i staden med sina sjuka till Jesus. Och han la sina händer på var och en av dem och botade deras olika sjukdomar. 41 Många blev också befriade från onda andar, och när andarna for ut ropade de: ”Du är Guds Son!” Men han sa åt dem strängt och förbjöd dem att tala, eftersom de visste att han var Messias, den utlovade kungen.

Jesus fortsätter att tala till folket

42 Tidigt nästa morgon gick Jesus därifrån, bort till en enslig plats. Folket letade efter honom överallt, och när de till slut hittade honom, gjorde de allt för att övertala honom att stanna kvar hos dem i Kafarnaum. 43 Men han sa till dem: ”Jag måste gå till de andra städerna också, för att sprida det glada budskapet om att Gud vill rädda människor och göra dem till sitt eget folk.* Det är därför jag har blivit utsänd.” 44 Och han talade sedan till folket i synagogorna* i Judeen*.
