1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is , and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. 18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it , they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was . 22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. 25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

1 Och Gud sa: "Jag är Herren din Gud, som befriade dig från slaveriet i Egypten. 3 Du ska inte tillbe några andra gudar än mig. 4 Du ska inte göra några avgudar, inte göra några bilder som föreställer djur, fåglar eller fiskar. 5 Du ska inte tillbe eller tjäna sådana, för jag, Herren din Gud, är en Gud som inte vill dela din tillbedjan med andra gudar! När jag straffar folket för deras synder och när man hatar mig, låter jag straffet drabba också barn, barnbarn och barnbarnsbarn. 6 Men jag slösar min kärlek över dem i tusentals generationer, när man älskar mig och lyder mina befallningar. 7 Du ska inte missbruka Herrens namn. Den som gör det ska inte undgå att bli straffad. 8 Kom ihåg att betrakta sabbaten som en helig dag. 9 Sex dagar i veckan är till för dina dagliga göromål och ditt vanliga arbete, 10 men den sjunde dagen är en ledig dag, som du ska vila på inför Herren, din Gud. På den dagen får du inte utföra något som helst arbete, och inte heller får din son, dotter eller tjänare, vare sig man eller kvinna, eller din boskap eller de som bor som främlingar ibland er göra det. 11 På sex dagar skapade nämligen Herren himlen, jorden och havet och allt som finns där, men på den sjunde dagen vilade han. Därför välsignade han sabbatsdagen och avskilde den som en helig dag. 12 Hedra dina föräldrar, så ska du få ett långt och härligt liv i det land som Herren, din Gud, ger dig. 13 Du ska inte döda. 14 Du ska inte begå äktenskapsbrott. 15 Du ska inte stjäla. 16 Du ska inte ljuga. 17 Du ska inte vara avundsjuk på din granne för vad han äger, eller ha begär till hans hustru, slavar, oxar, åsnor eller någonting annat som han har." 18 Allt folket såg eldslågorna och röken som steg upp från berget, och de hörde dundret och det långa basunljudet där de stod på avstånd och darrade av rädsla. 19 De sa till Mose: "Tala nu om för oss vad Gud säger, och vi ska lyda, men låt inte Gud tala direkt till oss, för då kanske vi dör." 20 "Var inte rädda", sa Mose till dem. "Gud vill på det här sättet visa sin fruktansvärda makt, så att ni från och med den här dagen ska akta er för att synda mot honom!" 21 Folket stod alltså kvar på avstånd medan Mose gick in i det täta, mörka molnet där Gud var. 22 Herren sa till Mose att han skulle vara Guds talesman inför folket och säga till dem: "Ni har själva varit vittnen till att jag talat till er från himlen. 23 Kom nu ihåg att ni inte får tillverka eller tillbe avgudar av silver eller guld eller någonting annat! 24 Det altare du reser åt mig ska vara enkelt och uppbyggt av jord. Frambär dina offer till mig på det, dina brännoffer och tackoffer av får eller oxar. Men bygg altaren bara där jag säger att du ska göra det. Då ska jag komma dit och välsigna dig. 25 Du kan också göra altaren av sten, men om du gör det ska du bara använda ohuggen sten. Om du använder något verktyg på stenen för att forma den, gör du den olämplig för mitt altare. 26 Och du ska inte heller göra en trappa upp till altaret. Om du gör det kanske kläderna inte döljer din nakenhet när du går upp, och det kan Herren inte acceptera.
