1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. 9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. 11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. 14 And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. 15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. 16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. 17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. 18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. 19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode. 20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. 21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. 22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. 24 But the word of God grew and multiplied. 25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

En ängel befriar Petrus ur fängelset

1 Ungefär samtidigt började kung Herodes gripa och misshandla flera av församlingens medlemmar. 2 Han lät halshugga Jakob, Johannes bror, 3 och när han såg att de judiska ledarna gillade det, arresterade han också Petrus. Detta hände under påskhögtiden*. 4 Efter arresteringen satte han Petrus i fängelse och lät fyra vaktstyrkor med vardera fyra man bevaka honom. Herodes hade efter påsken tänkt ställa Petrus inför folket och döma honom. 5 Men medan Petrus satt där fängslad, bad församlingen ivrigt att Gud skulle bevara honom. 6 Natten innan han skulle ställas inför rätta låg Petrus och sov, fastkedjad mellan två soldater, och utanför celldörren fanns andra soldater som vaktade fängelset. 7 Då fylldes cellen plötsligt av ljus, och en ängel från Herren stod där. Ängeln stötte Petrus i sidan och väckte honom och sa: ”Res dig upp, snabbt!” Och i samma stund föll kedjorna från Petrus händer. 8 Ängeln fortsatte: ”Ta på dig bältet och sandalerna”, och när Petrus gjort det, sa ängeln: ”Bra, svep nu om dig manteln och följ mig.” 9 Petrus följde med ängeln ut ur cellen, men han trodde hela tiden att det var en syn och inte något som hände i verkligheten. 10 De passerade först en vaktpost och sedan en till och var till slut framme vid järnporten som ledde ut mot staden. Där öppnade sig porten för dem alldeles av sig själv, det var bara att gå ut! Och sedan de gått nerför gatan en bit, var ängeln plötsligt borta! 11 När Petrus hade lugnat ner sig, sa han till sig själv: ”Det är sant! Herren sände verkligen sin ängel och räddade mig från Herodes, från allt som judarna hade väntat skulle hända mig.” 12 Och när han fattat helt och fullt gick han hem till Maria, mamma till Johannes Markus. Där var hela huset fullt av troende som bad till Gud. 13 Petrus bultade på porten, och en flicka som hette Rhode kom för att låsa upp. 14 Men när hon kände igen Petrus röst, blev hon så glad att hon glömde att öppna. Istället sprang hon tillbaka in i huset och berättade för alla att Petrus stod utanför på gatan. 15 ”Du är galen”, ropade de. Men hon gav sig inte, och då sa de: ”Det kanske är hans ängel.*” 16 Under tiden fortsatte Petrus att bulta, och när de äntligen öppnade och såg att det var han, blev de utom sig av häpnad. 17 Men han gav tecken åt dem att vara tysta och berättade sedan för dem hur Herren hade fört honom ut ur fängelset. Till sist sa han: ”Låt Jakob* och de andra i församlingen få veta vad som har hänt”, och så gick han vidare till en annan plats. 18 När morgonen kom blev det stor uppståndelse bland soldaterna i fängelset. Ingen kunde fatta vad som hade hänt med Petrus. 19 Och när Herodes skickade efter Petrus och inte fick tag i honom, ställde han till med förhör bland vakterna och dömde dem samtliga till döden. Efter detta lämnade Herodes Judeen och for till Caesarea och stannade där.

Herodes död

20 Invånarna i Tyros och Sidon*, som var beroende av Herodes land för sin matförsörjning, hade gjort Herodes arg och läget var spänt. De skickade därför en gemensam delegation till Herodes för att be om fred. Och sedan de lyckats få över kungens kammarherre Blastos på sin sida, 21 fick de löfte om att träffa Herodes. På den bestämda dagen tog sedan Herodes på sig den kungliga manteln, satte sig på sin tron och talade till dem. 22 Folket hyllade honom då och ropade: ”Det är en gud som talar och inte en människa!” 23 Men i samma ögonblick lät Herren en ängel göra Herodes sjuk, eftersom Herodes tog emot människors tillbedjan istället för att ge Gud äran, och han blev uppäten av maskar och dog.

Barnabas och Saul sänds ut från Antiochia

24 Men budskapet om Jesus spreds till allt fler, och många människor kom till tro. 25 Och sedan Barnabas och Saul hade fullgjort sitt uppdrag i Jerusalem, återvände de till Antiochia och tog Johannes Markus med sig.
