1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. 3 I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation. 5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. 6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. 8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. 9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 12 Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you. 13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. 14 For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth. 15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. 16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.

1 Kära vänner, Gud har alltså lovat att vi ska få vara hans eget folk. Låt oss därför hålla oss borta från all synd, vare sig det gäller handlingar eller tankar. Låt oss visa respekt för det Gud har sagt och leva helt för honom.

2 Jag ber er än en gång att ge mig plats i era hjärtan, för jag har inte handlat orätt mot någon. Jag har inte lurat någon eller utnyttjat någon. 3 Men detta säger jag inte för att ni ska känna er skyldiga. Nej, jag har ju redan sagt att jag ska älska er vad som än händer. 4 Jag litar fullständigt på er och är mycket stolt över er. Och nu har ni verkligen uppmuntrat mig och gjort mig jublande glad mitt i alla mina svårigheter. 5 När jag kom fram till Makedonien, fick jag ingen som helst ro. Runt omkring mig var det stridigheter, och inom mig var jag fylld av rädsla och oro. 6 Men Gud, som uppmuntrar den som är nedtryckt, uppmuntrade mig genom att Titus kom. 7 Och det var inte bara det att han kom som gjorde mig glad. Nej, det som verkligen gladde mig var att han själv hade blivit uppmuntrad hos er, och att han kunde berätta att ni längtade efter mitt besök, var ledsna över det som hade hänt och fortfarande ville mig väl. 8 Nu ångrar jag inte längre att jag skickade mitt förra brev till er, även om jag ett tag var bekymrad över hur ledsna ni skulle bli över det jag skrev. Men jag insåg ju att er förtvivlan snart skulle gå över. 9 Nu är jag istället glad, inte för att ni blev ledsna, utan därför att er förtvivlan fick er att vända om till Gud. Er förtvivlan kom ju av att ni insåg att ni hade handlat fel mot honom, och därför skadade jag ingen genom mitt brev. 10 Den förtvivlan Gud låter oss känna, den gör så att vi vänder om till honom och får evigt liv. En sådan förtvivlan behöver ingen ångra. Men vanlig mänsklig förtvivlan, den driver oss mot döden. 11 Tänk så mycket gott det har kommit av den förtvivlan Gud lät er känna. Ni ställde er genast på min sida. Ni blev upprörda över den synd mannen hade begått och blev oroliga över konsekvenserna. Ni längtade efter mig och ville lyda mina råd och straffa den skyldige. Ja, ni gjorde allt för att handla rätt. 12 Men jag skrev inte brevet bara med tanke på den man som hade syndat, eller på er som fick lida för det han gjort. Jag ville också att ni med Guds hjälp skulle inse hur helhjärtat ni egentligen stöder mig. 13 Och den iver ni nu visar har verkligen uppmuntrat mig. Dessutom blev jag väldigt glad för Titus skull. Han var så lycklig och lättad efter att ha träffat er. 14 Jag hade redan innan talat om för Titus hur stolt jag är över er, och jag behövde verkligen inte skämmas över er. Allt jag hade sagt till Titus om er visade sig vara sant, precis som allt annat är sant som jag har sagt till er. 15 Han älskar er nu mer än någonsin, eftersom han minns med vilken respekt ni lyssnade till honom och var villiga att följa alla hans råd. 16 Ja, jag är verkligen glad att jag så fullständigt kan lita på er.
