1 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:

3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:

8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;

10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.

12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

1 När vi inte kunde stå ut längre, beslöt vi oss därför att själva stanna kvar i Athen

2 och skicka vår bror Timotheos, Guds medarbetare som sprider det glada budskapet om Jesus. Han skulle styrka och uppmuntra er tro,

3 så att ni inte tappar modet under alla svårigheter ni möter. Men att lidande ingår i Guds plan för oss, det visste ni redan.

4 Medan vi fortfarande var kvar hos er, sa vi till er att vi alla kommer att få lida, och så har det också blivit, som ni vet.

5 När jag inte längre kunde stå ut med ovissheten, skickade jag därför Timotheos för att ta reda på om er tro hade klarat påfrestningarna. Jag var rädd att Frestaren hade fått er att falla, så att vårt arbete hade varit förgäves.

6 Men nu har Timotheos just återvänt med de goda nyheterna om att er tro och kärlek fortfarande är lika stark, och att ni minns vårt besök med glädje, och längtar lika mycket efter oss som vi längtar efter er.

7 Kära syskon, ni har med er tro tröstat oss i alla våra svårigheter och lidanden här.

8 Nu känns livet härligt igen, när vi vet att ni håller fast vid er tro på Herren Jesus.

9 Vi kan inte nog tacka Gud för den glädje ni har gett oss!

10 Dag och natt ber vi nu ivrigt till Gud att vi ska få träffa er igen, så att vi kan hjälpa er med det som fortfarande saknas i er tro.

11 Vi ber att vår Gud och Far själv och vår Herre Jesus ska låta det bli möjligt för oss att resa till er.

12 Vi ber också att Herren Jesus ska låta er kärlek till varandra och till alla människor bli stark och överflödande, precis som vår kärlek till er.

13 Ja, vi ber att Herren Jesus ska styrka er och göra er fria från synd, så att ni är värdiga att stå inför vår Gud och Far, den dag vår Herre Jesus kommer med alla som tillhör honom*.
