1 Er verpflichtete 80.000 Männer, die im Steinbruch in den Bergen arbeiteten, sowie 70.000, die für den Transport der gewonnenen Steinblöcke verantwortlich waren. Über diese Fronarbeiter setzte er 3600 Aufseher ein. 2 Er sandte Boten zu König Hiram von Tyrus und ließ ihm sagen: »Schon meinem Vater David hast du Zedernholz geliefert, als er sich einen Palast baute. 3 Nun möchte ich einen Tempel errichten und ihn dem HERRN, meinem Gott, weihen. Wir wollen darin wohlriechenden Weihrauch als Opfer verbrennen und die geweihten Brote aufschichten. Jeden Morgen und Abend, an den Sabbaten, Neumondfeiern und an allen anderen Festen wollen wir dort ein Brandopfer für den HERRN, unseren Gott, darbringen. So hat Gott es uns für alle Zeiten befohlen. 4 Der Tempel, den ich bauen will, soll sehr groß werden, denn unser Gott ist größer als alle anderen Götter. 5 Selbst der weite Himmel ist noch zu klein, um ihn zu fassen. Niemand kann ein Heiligtum errichten, das ihm angemessen wäre. Und wer bin ich schon? Ich kann nur einen Tempel bauen, in dem man Opfergaben für ihn verbrennt. 6 Nun bitte ich dich: Schick mir einen erfahrenen Mann, der mit Gold, Silber, Bronze und Eisen arbeiten kann. Er muss wissen, wie man mit rotem und violettem Purpur und mit Karmesin Stoffe färbt, und auch im Schnitzen und Gravieren sollte er Erfahrung haben. Er soll mit unseren Künstlern in Jerusalem und Juda zusammenarbeiten, die mein Vater David seinerzeit in Dienst gestellt hat. 7 Bitte liefere mir auch Zedern- und Zypressenholz sowie anderes Edelholz aus dem Libanon. Ich weiß ja, dass es in deinem Volk gute Holzfäller gibt. Meine Arbeiter werden deine dabei unterstützen. 8 Wir werden eine große Menge Holz brauchen, denn der Tempel, den ich bauen will, soll groß und prächtig sein. 9 Als Bezahlung für deine Holzfäller werde ich 2640 Tonnen gedroschenen Weizen liefern, 2640 Tonnen Gerste, 4500 Hektoliter Wein und 4500 Hektoliter Öl.« 10 König Hiram von Tyrus schickte einen Brief an Salomo zurück. Darin stand: »Der HERR liebt sein Volk, darum hat er dich zum König gemacht. 11 Ich danke dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat, dass er David einen so klugen und weisen Sohn geschenkt hat, der einen Tempel für den HERRN und einen Königspalast bauen will. 12 Ich kann dir den erfahrenen Künstler senden, den du suchst: Er heißt Hiram-Abi 13 und ist der Sohn einer israelitischen Frau aus dem Stamm Dan. Sein Vater kommt aus Tyrus. Hiram kann mit Gold, Silber, Bronze, Eisen, Steinen und Holz arbeiten; er weiß, wie man mit rotem und violettem Purpur und mit Karmesin Stoffe färbt, er versteht sich auf die Verarbeitung von feinen Leinenstoffen; aber auch im Schnitzen und Gravieren ist er geübt. Er zeichnet dir zu jedem Auftrag einen Entwurf und wird mit deinen Künstlern und denen deines verehrten Vaters David zusammenarbeiten. 14 Die Vorräte an Weizen, Gerste, Öl und Wein, von denen du, mein Herr, geschrieben hast, nehmen wir gerne an. 15 Dafür werden wir im Libanon so viel Holz fällen, wie du brauchst. Wir werden die Stämme zu Flößen zusammenbinden und sie der Küste entlang nach Jafo bringen. Von dort können deine Arbeiter sie nach Jerusalem holen.« 16 Salomo ließ alle Ausländer in Israel zählen. Er ging von den Verzeichnissen aus, die sein Vater David hatte anfertigen lassen. Die Zählung ergab, dass 153.600 Ausländer in Israel lebten. 17 Salomo verpflichtete 80.000 von ihnen zur Arbeit im Steinbruch in den Bergen und 70.000 als Träger für den Transport der Steinblöcke. Die restlichen 3600 Mann sollten als Aufseher die Fronarbeiter zur Arbeit anhalten.

1 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the LORD, and an house for his kingdom. 2 And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them. 3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me . 4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel. 5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods. 6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him? 7 Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide. 8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants, 9 Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great. 10 And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil. 11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them. 12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build an house for the LORD, and an house for his kingdom. 13 And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father', 14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be put to him, with thy cunning men, and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father. 15 Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants: 16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem. 17 And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred. 18 And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourscore thousand to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.
