1 König Joschafat von Juda aber kehrte wohlbehalten nach Jerusalem zurück. Vor seinem Palast 2 kam ihm der Seher Jehu entgegen, ein Sohn von Hanani. Er sagte zum König: »Hältst du es für richtig, einem Mann zu helfen, der von Gott nichts wissen will? Warum schließt du Freundschaft mit denen, die den HERRN hassen? Du hast den Zorn des HERRN heraufbeschworen! 3 Aber er hat bei dir auch etwas Gutes gefunden: Du hast die Holzpfähle, die der Göttin Aschera geweiht waren, überall zerstört und dich entschlossen, von ganzem Herzen Gott zu dienen.«

Joschafat ordnet das Rechtswesen neu

4 Von da an blieb Joschafat in Jerusalem und besuchte das Nordreich Israel nicht mehr. Er reiste aber durch ganz Juda, von Beerscheba im Süden bis zum Gebirge Ephraim im Norden, und ermutigte das Volk, wieder zum HERRN, dem Gott ihrer Vorfahren, umzukehren. 5 In allen befestigten Städten setzte er Richter ein 6 und ermahnte sie: »Denkt immer daran: Ihr sollt nicht im Auftrag von Menschen Recht sprechen, sondern im Auftrag des HERRN! Er wird euch helfen, gerechte Urteile zu fällen. 7 Habt Ehrfurcht vor Gott! Arbeitet gewissenhaft! Denn der HERR, unser Gott, ist nicht ungerecht, er bevorzugt niemanden und lässt sich nicht bestechen.« 8 In Jerusalem berief Joschafat einige Leviten, Priester und Sippenoberhäupter in das Richteramt. Ihnen wurden Verstöße gegen das Gesetz des HERRN vorgelegt, und gleichzeitig waren sie für die Rechtsstreitigkeiten der Einwohner Jerusalems zuständig*. 9 Joschafat ermahnte auch sie: »Übt euer Amt in Verantwortung vor dem HERRN aus! Seid gewissenhaft und unparteiisch! 10 Aus allen Städten des Landes wird man euch Fälle zur Entscheidung vorlegen. Ihr werdet über einen Mordfall oder einen Totschlag zu urteilen haben oder über Fragen, die Gottes Gesetz, irgendein Gebot, eine Weisung oder eine Rechtsbestimmung betreffen. Worum es sich auch handelt – sagt ihnen, was der HERR von ihnen will, damit sie nicht vor ihm schuldig werden! Wenn ihr das nicht tut, kommt sein Zorn nicht nur über sie, sondern auch über euch. Wenn ihr aber all das beherzigt, dann trifft euch keine Schuld. 11 Bei Rechtsfällen, die das Gesetz des HERRN betreffen, ist der Hohepriester Amarja der oberste Richter; in Sachen des Königs hat Fürst Sebadja, Jismaels Sohn vom Stamm Juda, das letzte Wort. Die Verwaltungsaufgaben werden von den Leviten erfüllt. Geht nun entschlossen an die Arbeit! Wenn ihr recht handelt, wird der HERR bei euch sein.«

1 And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem. 2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD. 3 Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God. 4 And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from Beersheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers. 5 And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city, 6 And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. 7 Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it : for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts. 8 Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem. 9 And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart. 10 And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass. 11 And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king' matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and the LORD shall be with the good.
