1Während das Heer der Israeliten bei der Quelle in der Nähe von Jesreel lagerte, sammelten die Philister ihre Truppen bei Afek.2Bei der Musterung marschierten alle Könige der Philister mit ihren Heeresabteilungen auf, als letzter Achisch mit David und seinen Leuten.3»Was haben denn diese Hebräer hier verloren?«, wollten die Heerführer der Philister wissen. Achisch antwortete: »Das ist David, der früher im Dienste König Sauls von Israel stand. Er ist nun schon lange bei mir. Seit er zu mir übergelaufen ist, hatte ich noch nie etwas an ihm auszusetzen.«4Doch die Heerführer wurden zornig und befahlen Achisch: »Schick ihn gefälligst nach Hause! Er kann ja in der Stadt bleiben, die du ihm überlassen hast. Aber auf keinen Fall darf er mit uns gegen Israel in den Krieg ziehen. Stell dir vor, er würde mitten in der Schlacht nicht mehr mit, sondern gegen uns kämpfen! Könnte er sich wohl die Gunst seines Königs Saul besser zurückerobern als mit den Köpfen unserer Soldaten?5Das ist doch der David, für den sie tanzten und sangen: ›Saul hat tausend Mann erschlagen, David aber zehntausend.‹«6Da rief Achisch David zu sich und sagte zu ihm: »Ich schwöre dir beim HERRN, dass ich dich für ehrlich halte. Ich hätte es sehr gern gesehen, wenn du mit mir in diese Schlacht gezogen wärst. Denn seit du in meinen Dienst getreten bist, habe ich nichts Schlechtes von dir gehört. Aber leider trauen die anderen Heerführer der Philister dir nicht.7Darum musst du wohl oder übel umkehren, damit du nichts tust, was sie verärgert.«8»Womit habe ich das verdient?«, wollte David wissen. »Hast du je etwas an mir auszusetzen gehabt, seit ich in deinen Diensten stehe? Warum darf ich nicht mit in die Schlacht ziehen und gegen die Feinde meines Herrn und Königs kämpfen?«9»Ich verstehe es ja auch nicht!«, antwortete Achisch. »Soweit ich dich kenne, bist du treu wie ein Engel Gottes. Aber die Heerführer der Philister bestehen darauf, dass du diesen Feldzug nicht mitmachst.10Packt also morgen bei Tagesanbruch eure Sachen – du und alle früheren Untertanen Sauls – und kehrt in die Stadt zurück, die ich euch als Wohnort überlassen habe. Macht euch in aller Frühe fertig und brecht auf, sobald es hell wird!«11So packten David und seine Männer früh am nächsten Morgen ihre Sachen und kehrten ins Land der Philister zurück. Die Philister aber zogen nach Jesreel.

1Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel.2And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.3Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here ? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?4And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?5Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?6Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.7Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.8And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?9And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.10Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master' servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.11So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
