1Samuël sprak opnieuw alle aanwezigen toe en zei: ‘Kijk, ik heb gedaan wat u vroeg. Ik heb u een koning gegeven die u zal regeren.2Mijn eigen zonen dienen u, maar ik sta hier als een grijze, oude man, die sinds zijn jeugd in dienst van het volk heeft gestaan.3Vertel mij nu eerlijk, nu ik hier voor de HERE en zijn gezalfde koning sta: heb ik ooit iemands os of ezel gestolen? Heb ik u ooit bedrogen? Heb ik u ooit onderdrukt? Ben ik wel eens corrupt geweest? Vertel het mij, dan zal ik rechtzetten wat ik verkeerd heb gedaan.’4‘Nee,’ gaven zij hem als antwoord, ‘u hebt ons nooit onderdrukt of bedrogen en u hebt nog nooit ook maar iets aangenomen.’5‘De HERE en zijn gezalfde koning zijn mijn getuigen,’ verklaarde Samuël daarop, ‘dat u mij er nooit van kunt beschuldigen u te hebben beroofd.’ ‘Ja, Hij is onze getuige,’ bevestigden zij.6‘De HERE wees Mozes en Aäron aan,’ vervolgde Samuël. ‘Hij leidde onze voorouders uit het land Egypte.7Blijf nu eerbiedig staan voor de HERE terwijl ik u herinner aan alle goede dingen die Hij voor u en uw voorouders heeft gedaan.8Lang nadat Jakob naar Egypte was gegaan, riepen de Israëlieten die in Egypte woonden naar de HERE. Hij stuurde Mozes en Aäron om uw voorouders naar dit land te brengen.9Maar zij vergaten de HERE, hun God, al snel. Daarom liet Hij hen verliezen van Sisera, de bevelhebber van het leger van de stad Hasor, van de Filistijnen en van de koning van Moab.10Toen riepen zij weer naar de HERE en gaven toe dat zij hadden gezondigd door zich van Hem af te keren en Baäl en Astarte te aanbidden. En zij smeekten: “Wij zullen U aanbidden als U ons wilt bevrijden uit de macht van onze vijanden.”11Daarop stuurde de HERE Gideon, Barak, Jefta en Samuël om hen te redden en vanaf dat moment leefde u in rust en vrede.12Maar toen u bang werd voor koning Nachas van Ammon, kwam u bij mij en zei dat u een koning wilde om over u te regeren. En dat terwijl de HERE, uw God, altijd uw Koning was geweest.13Maar goed dan, hier is de koning naar wie u hebt verlangd. Bekijk hem maar eens goed. De HERE heeft uw verzoek ingewilligd en hem als koning over u aangesteld.14Heb vanaf nu ontzag voor de HERE en aanbid alleen Hem. Luister naar zijn geboden en kom niet tegen Hem in opstand. Als u en uw koning dit doen, dient u de HERE, uw God, zoals het hoort.15Maar als u toch in opstand komt tegen de geboden van de HERE en weigert naar Hem te luisteren, zal zijn hand net zo zwaar op u drukken als op uw voorouders.16Let nu maar eens op wat voor machtige wonderen de HERE doet.17U weet allemaal dat het in deze tijd van het jaar, tijdens de tarweoogst, niet regent, ik zal tot de HERE bidden of Hij het vandaag wil laten regenen en onweren. Dan zult u begrijpen hoe groot in feite uw goddeloosheid is geweest door om een koning te vragen!’18Samuël riep naar de HERE en de HERE liet het regenen en onweren. Het hele volk kreeg diep ontzag voor de HERE en voor Samuël.19‘Bid toch tot de HERE, uw God, voor ons, uw knechten, anders zullen wij sterven!’ riepen zij Samuël toe. ‘Nu hebben wij naast al onze andere zonden opnieuw gezondigd door ook nog om een koning te vragen.’20‘Wees niet bang,’ antwoordde Samuël. ‘U hebt inderdaad gezondigd, maar zorg er in het vervolg voor dat u de HERE met heel uw hart dient en dat u Hem op geen enkele manier links laat liggen.21Afgoden kunnen u niet helpen, omdat ze niets voorstellen.22De HERE zal zijn uitverkoren volk niet in de steek laten, want dan zou Hij zijn grote naam tekortdoen. Hij maakte u immers tot zijn eigen volk, omdat Hij dat zo wilde!23En wat mij betreft, ik zou niet willen zondigen tegen de HERE door niet meer voor u te bidden. Ik zal ook gewoon doorgaan met u te leren over de dingen die rechtvaardig en goed zijn.24Heb alleen ontzag voor de HERE en dien Hem trouw, denk aan al die geweldige dingen die Hij voor u heeft gedaan.25Maar als u toch blijft doorgaan met zondigen, zullen u en uw koning worden vernietigd.’

Samuel’s Farewell Address
1And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have obeyed your voice in all that you have said to me and have made a king over you.2And now, behold, the king walks before you, and I am old and gray; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.3Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me* and I will restore it to you.”4They said, “You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.”5And he said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” And they said, “He is witness.”6And Samuel said to the people, “The Lord is witness,* who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.7Now therefore stand still that I may plead with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous deeds of the Lord that he performed for you and for your fathers.8When Jacob went into Egypt, and the Egyptians oppressed them,* then your fathers cried out to the Lord and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place.9But they forgot the Lord their God. And he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor,* and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab. And they fought against them.10And they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. But now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, that we may serve you.’11And the Lord sent Jerubbaal and Barak* and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you lived in safety.12And when you saw that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your God was your king.13And now behold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, the Lord has set a king over you.14If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well.15But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king.*16Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.17Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king.”18So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.19And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.”20And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.21And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.22For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself.23Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way.24Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.25But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.”
