Einführung und Präsentation des Knechts als Bund und Licht

1 Siehe, das ist mein Knecht, den ich stütze; / das ist mein Erwählter, an ihm finde ich Gefallen. Ich habe meinen Geist auf ihn gelegt, / er bringt den Nationen das Recht. 2 Er schreit nicht und lärmt nicht / und lässt seine Stimme nicht auf der Gasse erschallen. 3 Das geknickte Rohr zerbricht er nicht / und den glimmenden Docht löscht er nicht aus; / ja, er bringt wirklich das Recht. 4 Er verglimmt nicht und wird nicht geknickt, / bis er auf der Erde das Recht begründet hat. / Auf seine Weisung warten die Inseln. 5 So spricht Gott, der HERR, / der den Himmel erschaffen und ausgespannt hat, / der die Erde gemacht hat und alles, was auf ihr wächst, der dem Volk auf ihr Atem gibt / und Geist allen, die auf ihr gehen. 6 Ich, der HERR, habe dich aus Gerechtigkeit gerufen, / ich fasse dich an der Hand. Ich schaffe und mache dich zum Bund mit dem Volk, / zum Licht der Nationen, 7 um blinde Augen zu öffnen, / Gefangene aus dem Kerker zu holen und die im Dunkel sitzen, / aus der Haft. 8 Ich bin der HERR, das ist mein Name; / ich überlasse die Ehre, die mir gebührt, keinem andern, / meinen Ruhm nicht den Götzen. 9 Siehe, das Frühere ist eingetroffen, / Neues kündige ich an. Noch ehe es zum Vorschein kommt, / mache ich es euch bekannt.

Das neue Lied

10 Singt dem HERRN ein neues Lied, / seinen Ruhm vom Ende der Erde her, die ihr das Meer befahrt, seine Fülle, / die Inseln und ihre Bewohner! 11 Die Wüste und ihre Städte sollen sich freuen, / die Dörfer, die Kedar bewohnt. Die Bewohner von Sela sollen singen vor Freude / und jubeln auf den Gipfeln der Berge. 12 Sie sollen dem HERRN die Ehre geben, / sein Lob auf den Inseln verkünden.*

Macht Gottes

13 Der HERR zieht in den Kampf wie ein Held, / er entfacht seine Leidenschaft wie ein Krieger. Er erhebt den Schlachtruf und schreit, / er zeigt sich als Held gegenüber den Feinden. 14 Ich hatte sehr lange geschwiegen, / ich war still und hielt mich zurück. Wie eine Gebärende will ich nun schreien, / ich stöhne und ringe um Luft. 15 Die Berge und Hügel dörre ich aus / und lasse ihr Gras völlig vertrocknen. Flüsse mache ich zu Inseln / und Teiche lege ich trocken. 16 Blinde führe ich auf Wegen, die sie nicht kennen, / auf unbekannten Pfaden lasse ich sie wandern. Die Finsternis vor ihren Augen mache ich zu Licht; / was krumm ist, mache ich gerade. Das sind die Taten, die ich vollbringe, / und ich lasse davon nicht mehr ab. 17 Alle müssen weichen und werden beschämt, / die auf Götzenbilder vertrauen, die zu gegossenen Bildern sagen: / Ihr seid unsere Götter.

Israel, der blinde und taube Knecht Gottes

18 Ihr, die ihr taub seid, hört, / ihr Blinden, blickt auf und seht her! 19 Wer ist so blind wie mein Knecht / und so taub wie der Bote, den ich sende? Wer ist so blind wie der Wiederhergestellte / und so blind wie der Knecht des HERRN?* 20 Vieles hast du gesehen, aber es nicht beachtet; / die Ohren sind offen und doch hört er nicht. 21 Dem HERRN hat es um seiner Gerechtigkeit willen gefallen, / die Weisung groß und herrlich zu machen. 22 Doch es ist ein beraubtes, ausgeplündertes Volk, / gefangen in Kerkern, in Gefängnissen verschwunden. Sie sind zur Beute geworden / und niemand rettet; zur Plünderung und niemand sagt: / Gib zurück! 23 Wer von euch vernimmt diese Worte, / wer merkt auf und hört künftig darauf? 24 Wer lieferte Jakob der Plünderung aus / und Israel denen, die Beute machen? War es nicht der HERR, / gegen den sie sündigten? Sie wollten nicht auf seinen Wegen gehen, / sie hörten nicht auf seine Weisung. 25 Da goss er über sie seinen glühenden Zorn aus / und den Schrecken des Krieges: Ringsum hat er sie umlodert, / doch sie merkten es nicht; du hast sie in Brand gesetzt, / doch sie nahmen es sich nicht zu Herzen.

The Lord’s chosen servant

1 ‘Here is my servant. I take good care of him. I have chosen him. I am very pleased with him. I will put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out. He will not raise his voice in the streets. 3 He will not break a bent twig. He will not put out a dimly burning flame. He will be faithful and make everything right. 4 He will not grow weak or lose hope. He will not give up until he brings justice to the earth. The islands will put their hope in his teaching.’ 5 God created the heavens and stretches them out. The LORD spreads out the earth with everything that grows on it. He gives breath to its people. He gives life to those who walk on it. He says to his servant, 6 ‘I, the LORD, have chosen you to do what is right. I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you safe. You will put into effect my covenant with the people of Israel. And you will be a light for the Gentiles. 7 You will open eyes that can’t see. You will set prisoners free. Those who sit in darkness will come out of their cells. 8 ‘I am the LORD. That is my name! I will not let any other god share my glory. I will not let statues of gods share my praise. 9 What I said would happen has taken place. Now I announce new things to you. Before they even begin to happen, I announce them to you.’

A song of praise to the Lord

10 Sing a new song to the LORD. Sing praise to him from one end of the earth to the other. Sing, you who sail out on the ocean. Sing, all you creatures in it. Sing, you islands. Sing, all you who live there. 11 Let the desert and its towns raise their voices. Let those who live in the settlements of Kedar be glad. Let the people of Sela sing for joy. Let them shout from the tops of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory to the LORD. Let them praise him in the islands. 13 The LORD will march out like a mighty warrior. He will stir up his anger like a soldier getting ready to fight. He will shout the battle cry. And he will win the battle over his enemies. 14 The LORD says, ‘For a long time I have kept silent. I have been calm and quiet. But now, like a woman having a baby, I cry out. I gasp and pant. 15 I will completely destroy the mountains and hills. I will dry up everything that grows there. I will turn rivers into dry land. I will dry up the pools. 16 Israel is blind. So I will lead them along paths they had not known before. I will guide them on roads they are not familiar with. I will turn the darkness into light as they travel. I will make the rough places smooth. Those are the things I will do. I will not desert my people. 17 Some people trust in statues of gods. They say to them, “You are our gods.” But they will be dishonoured. They will be put to shame.

Israel can’t see or hear

18 ‘Israel, listen to me! You can hear, but you do not understand. Look to me! You can see, but you do not know what you are seeing. 19 The people of Israel serve me. But who is more blind than they are? Who is more deaf than the messengers I send? Who is more blind than the one who has promised to be faithful to me? Who is more blind than the servant of the LORD? 20 Israel, you have seen many things. But you do not pay any attention to me. Your ears are open. But you do not listen to anything I say.’ 21 The LORD wanted his people to see how great and glorious his law is. He wanted to show them that he always does what is right. 22 Enemies have carried off everything they own. All my people are trapped in pits or hidden away in prisons. They themselves have become like stolen goods. No one can save them. They have been carried off. And there is no one who will say, ‘Send them back.’ 23 Family of Jacob, who among you will listen to what I’m saying? People of Israel, which one of you will pay close attention in days to come? 24 Who allowed you to be carried off like stolen goods? Who handed you over to robbers? The LORD did it! We have sinned against him. Israel, you wouldn’t follow his ways. You didn’t obey his law. 25 So he poured out his great anger on you. He had many of you killed in battle. You were surrounded by flames. But you didn’t realise what was happening. Many of you were destroyed. But you didn’t learn anything from it.
