1 Ein Wallfahrtslied. Von Salomo. Wenn nicht der HERR das Haus baut, mühen sich umsonst, die daran bauen. Wenn nicht der HERR die Stadt behütet, wacht umsonst, der sie behütet. 2 Es ist umsonst, dass ihr früh aufsteht und euch spät erst niedersetzt, / um das Brot der Mühsal zu essen; was recht ist, gibt der HERR denen, die er liebt, im Schlaf.* 3 Siehe, ein Erbteil vom HERRN sind Söhne, ein Lohn ist die Frucht des Leibes. 4 Wie Pfeile in der Hand eines Kriegers, so sind Söhne aus den Jahren der Jugend. 5 Selig der Mann, der mit ihnen den Köcher gefüllt hat! / Sie werden nicht zuschanden, wenn sie mit ihren Feinden rechten im Tor.

1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. 3 Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children* of one’s youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.*
