1Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight.2I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down only the king,3and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man,* and all the people will be at peace.”4And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.5Then Absalom said, “Call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.”6And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.”7Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.”8Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged,* like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people.9Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall* at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’10Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men.11But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person.12So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground, and of him and all the men with him not one will be left.13If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there.”14And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained* to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom.15Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and so did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and so have I counseled.16Now therefore send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not stay tonight at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.’”17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting at En-rogel. A female servant was to go and tell them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they were not to be seen entering the city.18But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So both of them went away quickly and came to the house of a man at Bahurim, who had a well in his courtyard. And they went down into it.19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth and scattered grain on it, and nothing was known of it.20When Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook* of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.21After they had gone, the men came up out of the well, and went and told King David. They said to David, “Arise, and go quickly over the water, for thus and so has Ahithophel counseled against you.”22Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed the Jordan. By daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.23When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.25Now Absalom had set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite,* who had married Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.26And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.27When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim,28brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans and lentils,*29honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat, for they said, “The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.”

1Achitophel dit à Absalom: «Laisse-moi choisir 12'000 hommes et je partirai à la poursuite de David cette nuit même.2Je le surprendrai pendant qu'il est fatigué et sans force, je l'effraierai et tout le peuple qui l'accompagne prendra la fuite. Je frapperai seulement le roi,3et je ramènerai tout le peuple à toi. La mort de l'homme à qui tu en veux assurera le retour de tous et tout le peuple sera en paix.»4Cette parole plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d'Israël.5Cependant Absalom dit: «Appelez encore Hushaï, l'Arkien! Ecoutons aussi ce qu'il nous dira.»6Hushaï vint vers Absalom et celui-ci lui dit: «Voici comment a parlé Achitophel. Devons-nous faire ce qu'il a dit ou non? Dis ta proposition!»7Hushaï répondit à Absalom: «Cette fois-ci, le conseil qu'a donné Achitophel n'est pas bon.»8Et il ajouta: «Tu connais ton père et ses hommes: ce sont de vaillants guerriers et ils sont furieux comme le serait, dans la campagne, une ourse à qui l'on aurait enlevé ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre et il ne passera pas la nuit avec la troupe.9Maintenant, il doit être caché dans une grotte ou un autre endroit. Si des hommes tombent dès le début sous leurs coups, on ne tardera pas à l'apprendre et l'on dira: ‘Le peuple qui suit Absalom a subi une défaite!’10Alors même les plus vaillants, auraient-ils un cœur de lion, perdront courage. En effet, tout Israël sait que ton père est un héros et qu'il a des braves avec lui.11Voici donc ce que je conseille: que tout Israël se rassemble auprès de toi, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Shéba. C'est une foule pareille au sable qui est au bord de la mer. Tu marcheras en personne au combat.12Nous le rattraperons où qu'il se trouve et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol. Il n'y aura pas un seul survivant, ni lui ni aucun des hommes qui sont avec lui.13S'il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël portera des cordes vers cette ville et nous la traînerons jusqu'au torrent jusqu'à ce qu'on n'en trouve plus une pierre.»14Absalom et tous les Israélites dirent: «Le conseil de Hushaï l'Arkien vaut mieux que celui d'Achitophel.» Or l'Eternel avait décidé d'anéantir le bon conseil d'Achitophel afin de faire venir le malheur sur Absalom.15Hushaï dit aux prêtres Tsadok et Abiathar: «Achitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d'Israël, et moi, j'ai conseillé telle et telle chose.16Maintenant, envoyez tout de suite un message à David. Faites-lui dire: ‘Ne passe pas la nuit dans les plaines du désert mais va plus loin. Sinon, le roi et tout le peuple qui est avec lui risquent d'être exterminés.’»17Jonathan et Achimaats se tenaient à En-Roguel. Une servante vint leur dire d'aller informer le roi David, car ils ne devaient pas se montrer en entrant dans la ville.18Un jeune homme les aperçut néanmoins et le rapporta à Absalom, mais ils se dépêchèrent tous deux de partir et ils arrivèrent à Bachurim chez un homme qui avait un puits dans sa cour. Ils y descendirent,19et la femme prit une couverture qu'elle étendit sur l'ouverture du puits. Puis elle versa du grain dessus pour qu'on ne se doute de rien.20Les serviteurs d'Absalom arrivèrent vers cette femme dans la maison et dirent: «Où sont Achimaats et Jonathan?» La femme leur répondit: «Ils ont traversé le fleuve.» Ils cherchèrent, mais ne les trouvant pas ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.21Après leur départ, Achimaats et Jonathan remontèrent du puits et allèrent informer le roi David. Ils lui dirent: «Levez-vous et dépêchez-vous de traverser le fleuve, car Achitophel a donné tel conseil contre vous.»22David et tout le peuple qui l'accompagnait se levèrent et passèrent le Jourdain. A l'aube, pas un seul ne manquait, ils avaient tous passé le Jourdain.23Voyant que son conseil n'était pas suivi, Achitophel sella son âne et partit pour retourner chez lui, dans sa ville. Il donna ses ordres à sa famille, puis il se pendit. C'est ainsi qu'il mourut et on l'enterra dans le tombeau de son père.24Quant à David, il arriva à Mahanaïm, tandis qu'Absalom passait le Jourdain avec tous les Israélites.25Absalom mit Amasa à la tête de l'armée en remplacement de Joab. Amasa était le fils d'un homme appelé Jithra. Ce Jithra était un Israélite qui avait eu des relations avec Abigal, fille de Nachash et sœur de Tseruja, la mère de Joab.26Israël et Absalom installèrent leur camp dans le pays de Galaad.27Lorsque David fut arrivé à Mahanaïm, Shobi, fils de Nachash, originaire de Rabba, la capitale des Ammonites, ainsi que Makir, fils d'Ammiel, originaire de Lodebar, et Barzillaï le Galaadite, originaire de Roguelim,28apportèrent des lits, des bassins, des pots en terre, du blé, de l'orge, de la farine, du grain rôti, des fèves, des lentilles, des pois rôtis,29du miel, du lait caillé, des brebis et des fromages de vache. Ils apportèrent ces vivres à David et au peuple qui était avec lui, afin qu'ils mangent. Ils se disaient en effet: «Ce peuple a dû souffrir de la faim, de la fatigue et de la soif dans le désert.»
