1* Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?”2And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place.3Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.”4And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.”5And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?”6So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.7Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen.8Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”9And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”
David Flees to Gath
10And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath.11And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”12And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.13So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.14Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me?15Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

Celui-ci courut effrayé à sa rencontre et lui demanda: «Pourquoi es-tu seul et n'y a-t-il personne avec toi?»3David répondit au prêtre Achimélec: «Le roi m'a donné un ordre et m'a dit: ‘Que personne ne sache rien de l'affaire pour laquelle je t'envoie ni de l'ordre que je t'ai donné.’ J'ai fixé un rendez-vous à mes hommes.4Maintenant qu'as-tu sous la main? Donne-moi cinq pains ou ce que tu trouveras.»5Le prêtre répondit à David: «Je n'ai pas de pain ordinaire sous la main, mais je peux te donner du pain consacré, à condition que tes hommes n'aient pas eu de relations avec des femmes récemment!»6David répondit au prêtre: «Nous n'avons pas eu de relations avec des femmes, comme toujours quand je pars en campagne. Les affaires de mes hommes sont consacrées, même si une expédition a un caractère profane. Elles le seront d'autant plus aujourd'hui.»7Alors le prêtre lui donna du pain consacré, car il n'y avait là pas d'autre pain. On l'avait retiré de devant l'Eternel pour le remplacer par du pain chaud au moment où on l'avait pris.8Ce jour-là, un des serviteurs de Saül était présent, enfermé qu'il était au service de l'Eternel. C'était un Edomite du nom de Doëg, qui était le chef des bergers de Saül.9David dit à Achimélec: «N'as-tu pas sous la main une lance ou une épée? En effet, je n'ai pris avec moi ni mon épée ni mes armes, parce que l'ordre du roi était urgent.»10Le prêtre répondit: «Il y a l'épée de Goliath, le Philistin, que tu as tué dans la vallée d'Ela. Elle est enveloppée dans un drap derrière l'éphod. Si tu veux la prendre, prends-la, car il n'y en a pas d'autre ici.» David répliqua: «Il n'y en a pas de pareille. Donne-la-moi.»11David se leva et s'enfuit le jour même loin de Saül. Il arriva chez Akish, le roi de Gath.12Les serviteurs d'Akish lui dirent: «N'est-ce pas David, le roi du pays? N'est-ce pas celui en l'honneur de qui l'on chantait en dansant: ‘Saül a frappé ses 1000, et David ses 10'000’?»13David prit ces paroles à cœur et éprouva une grande peur vis-à-vis d'Akish, le roi de Gath.14Il fit semblant d'être fou sous leurs yeux et accomplit des actes de démence devant eux. Il faisait des marques sur les battants des portes et laissait couler sa salive sur sa barbe.15Akish dit à ses serviteurs: «Vous voyez bien que cet homme a perdu la raison. Pourquoi me l'amenez-vous?16Est-ce que je manque de fous, pour que vous m'ameniez celui-ci et me rendiez témoin de ses actes de démence? Faut-il qu'il entre dans ma maison?»
