Giving to the Needy

1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Lord’s Prayer

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.* 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done,* on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread,* 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.* 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Fasting

16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust* destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.*

Do Not Be Anxious

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?* 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

1 «مراقب باشيد كه اعمال نيک خود را در انظار مردم انجام ندهيد، تا شما را ببينند و تحسين كنند، زيرا در اين صورت نزد پدر آسمانیتان اجری نخواهيد داشت. 2 هرگاه به فقيری كمک میكنی، مانند رياكاران كه در كنيسه و در بازار از خود تعريف میكنند تا مردم به آنها احترام بگذارند، دربارهٔ كار نيک خود داد سخن سر نده، چون به اين ترتيب، اجری را كه میبايست از خدا بگيری، از مردم گرفتهای. 3 اما وقتی به كسی صدقهای میدهی، نگذار حتی دست چپت از كاری كه دست راستت میكند، آگاه شود، 4 تا نيكويی تو در نهان باشد. آنگاه پدر آسمانی كه امور نهان را میبيند، تو را اجر خواهد داد.

دعا و روزهٔ مسيحی

5 «و اما دربارهٔ دعا. هرگاه دعا میكنی، مانند رياكاران نباش كه دوست دارند در عبادتگاهها يا در گوشه و كنار خيابانها نماز بخوانند تا توجه مردم را به خود جلب كنند و خود را مؤمن نشان دهند. مطمئن باش اجری را كه بايد از خدا بگيرند، همين جا از مردم گرفتهاند. 6 اما تو هرگاه دعا میكنی، در تنهايی و در خلوت دل، پدر آسمانی را عبادت نما؛ و او كه كارهای نهان تو را میبيند، به تو پاداش خواهد داد. 7 «وقتی دعا میكنيد، مانند كسانی كه خدای حقيقی را نمیشناسند، وِردهای بیمعنی تكرار نكنيد. ايشان گمان میكنند كه با تكرار زياد، دعايشان مستجاب میشود. اما شما اين را به یاد داشته باشيد كه پدرتان، قبل از اينكه از او چيزی بخواهيد، كاملاً از نيازهای شما آگاه است. 9 «پس شما اين گونه دعا كنيد: «ای پدر ما كه در آسمانی، نام مقدس تو گرامی باد. 10 ملكوت تو برقرار گردد. خواست تو آنچنان كه در آسمان مورد اجراست، بر زمين نيز اجرا شود. 11 نان روزانهٔ ما را امروز نيز به ما ارزانی دار. 12 خطاهای ما را بيامرز چنانكه ما نيز آنان را كه به ما بدی كردهاند، میبخشيم. 13 ما را از وسوسهها دور نگاه دار و از شيطان حفظ فرما؛ زيرا ملكوت و قدرت و جلال تا ابد از آن توست. آمين! 14 «پدر آسمانی، شما را به شرطی خواهد بخشيد كه شما نيز آنانی را كه به شما بدی كردهاند، ببخشيد. 16 «و اما دربارهٔ روزه. وقتی روزه میگيريد، مانند رياكاران خود را افسرده و ناتوان نشان ندهيد. ايشان با اين كار میخواهند به مردم بفهمانند كه روزه گرفتهاند. مطمئن باشيد كه ايشان تمام اجر خود را به همين صورت از مردم میگيرند. 17 اما تو وقتی روزه میگيری، سر و صورت خود را تميز و مرتب كن، 18 تا كسی متوجه نشود روزه گرفتهای. آنگاه پدر آسمانی تو كه از همه چيز آگاه است، تو را اجر خواهد داد.

ثروت و خوراک و پوشاک

19 «ثروت خود را بر روی اين زمين نيندوزيد زيرا ممكن است بيد يا زنگ به آن آسيب رساند و يا دزد آن را بربايد. 20 ثروتتان را در آسمان بيندوزيد، در جايی كه از بيد و زنگ و دزد خبری نيست. 21 اگر ثروت شما در آسمان باشد، فكر و دلتان نيز در آنجا خواهد بود. 22 «چشم، چراغ وجود انسان است. اگر چشم تو پاک باشد، تمام وجودت نيز پاک و روشن خواهد بود. 23 ولی اگر چشمت با شهوت و طمع تيره شده باشد، تمام وجودت هم در تاريكی عميقی فرو خواهد رفت. چه تاريكی وحشتناكی! 24 «نمیتوانی به دو ارباب خدمت كنی. بايد فقط يكی از آنها را دوست داشته باشی و فقط به يكی وفادار بمانی. همچنين نمیتوانی هم بندهٔ خدا باشی و هم بندهٔ پول. 25 «پس نصيحت من اين است كه برای خوراک و پوشاک غصه نخوريد. برای همين زندگی و بدنی كه داريد شاد باشيد. آيا ارزش زندگی و بدن، بيشتر از خوراک و پوشاک نيست؟ 26 به پرندگان نگاه كنيد. غصه ندارند كه چه بخورند. نه میكارند، نه درو میكنند، و نه در انبارها ذخيره میكنند، ولی پدر آسمانی شما خوراک آنها را فراهم میسازد. آيا شما برای خدا خيلی بيشتر از اين پرندگان ارزش نداريد؟ 27 آيا غصه خوردن میتواند يک لحظه عمرتان را طولانیتر كند؟ 28 «چرا برای لباس و پوشاک غصه میخوريد؟ به گلهای سوسن كه در صحرا هستند، نگاه كنيد. آنها برای لباس غصه نمیخورند. 29 با اين حال به شما میگويم كه سليمان هم با تمام شكوه و ثروت خود، هرگز لباسی به زيبايی اين گلهای صحرايی نپوشيد. 30 پس اگر خدا در فكر گلهايی است كه امروز هستند و فردا از بين میروند، چقدر بيشتر در فكر شماست، ای كمايمانان. 31 «پس غصهٔ خوراک و پوشاک را نخوريد. چون بیايمانان دربارهٔ اين چيزها دائماً فكر میكنند و سخن میگويند. شما با ايشان فرق داريد. پدر آسمانی شما كاملاً میداند شما به چه نياز داريد. 33 اگر شما قبل از هر چيز، به ملكوت و عدالت خدا دل ببنديد، او همهٔ اين نيازهای شما را برآورده خواهد ساخت. 34 «پس غصهٔ فردا را نخوريد، چون خدا در فكر فردای شما نيز میباشد. مشكلات هر روز برای همان روز كافی است؛ لازم نيست مشكلات روز بعد را نيز به آن بيفزاييد.»
