The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them,* “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock* I will build my church, and the gates of hell* shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed* in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord!* This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance* to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life* will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

درخواست معجزه

1 روزی فريسیها و صدوقیها كه سران مذهبی و سياسی قوم بودند، آمدند تا ادعای عيسی را مبنی بر مسيح بودن، بيازمايند. به اين منظور از او خواستند تا معجزهای آسمانی بكند. 2 او جواب داد: «شما خوب میتوانيد وضع هوا را پيشبينی كنيد. اگر عصر، آسمان سرخ باشد، میگوييد فردا هوا خوب خواهد بود؛ و اگر صبح، آسمان سرخ باشد، میگوييد كه باران خواهد باريد. چگونه اين چيزها را میدانيد، اما نمیتوانيد علائم و نشانههای زمانها را درک كنيد؟ 4 اين قوم گناهكار و بیايمان معجزهٔ آسمانی میخواهند، ولی غير از معجزهٔ يونس، معجزهٔ ديگری به آنان نشان داده نخواهد شد.» اين را گفت و از ايشان جدا شد.

خميرمايه فريسیها و صدوقیها

5 وقتی به آن سوس دريا رسيدند، شاگردان متوجه شدند كه فراموش كردهاند چيزی برای خوردن بردارند. 6 عيسی به ايشان فرمود: «مواظب باشيد و خود را از خميرمايه فريسیها و صدوقیها دور نگه داريد.» 7 شاگردان فكر كردند كه گفتهٔ عيسی به اين علت است كه ايشان فراموش كردهاند نان بردارند. 8 عيسی فكر ايشان را درک كرد و فرمود: «ای كمايمانها! چرا اينقدر غصه میخوريد كه نان به همراه نياوردهايد؟ 9 آيا هنوز هم نمیفهميد؟ آيا فراموش كردهايد كه چطور با پنج نان، پنج هزار نفر را سير كردم؟ آن روز چند سبد از خُردهها جمع كرديد؟ 10 يا از ياد بردهايد كه يكبار ديگر با هفت نان، چهار هزار نفر را سير كردم؟ چند سبد از خُردهها جمع كرديد؟ 11 پس چگونه باز فكر میكنيد كه من دربارهٔ نان سخن میگويم؟ باز هم میگويم: از خميرمايهٔ فريسیها و صدوقیها خود را دور نگاه داريد.» 12 بالاخره شاگردان فهميدند كه منظور عيسی از«خميرمايه»، همانا تعليمات فريسیها و صدوقیها است.

عقيدهٔ پطرس دربارهٔ شخصيت عيسی

13 وقتی عيسی به قيصريهٔ فيليپ رسيد، از شاگردانش پرسيد: «مردم مرا كه میدانند؟» 14 جواب دادند: «بعضیها میگويند كه شما يحيای پيغمبر هستيد؛ عدهای نيز میگويند الياس، يا ارميا و يا يكی از پيغمبران ديگر میباشيد.» 15 سپس پرسيد: «شما مرا كه میدانيد؟» 16 شمعون پطرس جواب داد: «مسيح، فرزند خدای زنده!» 17 عيسی فرمود: «ای شمعون، پسر يونا، خوشا به حال تو! زيرا تو اين حقيقت را از انسان نياموختی، بلكه پدر آسمانی من اين را بر تو آشكار ساخته است. 18 تو پطرس، يعنی ”سنگ“ هستی، و من بر روی اين صخره، كليسای خود را بنا میكنم، و قدرتهای جهنم هرگز قادر به نابودی آن نخواهند بود. 19 من كليدهای ملكوت خدا را در اختيار تو میگذارم تا هر دری را بر روی زمين ببندی، در آسمان بسته شود، و هر دری را بگشايی در آسمان نيز گشوده شود.» 20 آنگاه به شاگردانش دستور داد به كسی نگويند كه او مسيح است.

پيشگويی عيسی دربارهٔ مرگ خويش

21 از آن پس، عيسی آشكارا به شاگردانش میگفت كه او به اورشليم خواهد رفت و در آنجا سران يهود و علمای مذهبی او را آزار داده، خواهند كشت؛ اما میگفت كه روز سوم زنده خواهد شد. 22 پطرس او را به كناری كشيده، با مخالفت به او گفت: «سَروَر من، خدا نكند كه چنين اتفاقی برای شما بيفتد.» 23 عيسی برگشت و به پطرس فرمود: «دور شو از من ای شيطان! تو دام خطرناكی برای من میباشی! فكر تو فكر بشری است نه الهی.» 24 آنگاه عيسی به شاگردانش گفت: «هر كه میخواهد مريد من باشد، بايد خود را فراموش كند و صليب خود را برداشته، مرا پيروی كند. 25 زيرا هر كه بخواهد جان خود را برای خود حفظ كند، آن را از دست خواهد داد؛ اما كسی كه جانش را به خاطر من فدا كند، آن را دوباره به دست خواهد آورد. 26 برای شما چه فايدهای دارد اگر تمام دنيا را داشته باشيد، ولی زندگی جاويد را از دست بدهيد؟ آيا چيزی پيدا میشود كه قدر و قيمتش از زندگی جاويد بيشتر باشد؟ 27 زيرا من با فرشتگان خود در شكوه و جلال پدرم خواهم آمد و هر كس را از روی اعمالش داوری خواهم كرد. 28 بعضی از كسانی كه در اينجا هستند، پيش از مرگ، مرا در شكوه ملكوتم خواهند ديد.»
