1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.2About Egypt. Concerning the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:3“Prepare buckler and shield, and advance for battle!4Harness the horses; mount, O horsemen! Take your stations with your helmets, polish your spears, put on your armor!5Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and have turned backward. Their warriors are beaten down and have fled in haste; they look not back— terror on every side! declares the Lord.6“The swift cannot flee away, nor the warrior escape; in the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen.7“Who is this, rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge?8Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth, I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’9Advance, O horses, and rage, O chariots! Let the warriors go out: men of Cush and Put who handle the shield, men of Lud, skilled in handling the bow.10That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of vengeance, to avenge himself on his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord God of hosts holds a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.11Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain you have used many medicines; there is no healing for you.12The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry; for warrior has stumbled against warrior; they have both fallen together.”13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:14“Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in Migdol; proclaim in Memphis and Tahpanhes; say, ‘Stand ready and be prepared, for the sword shall devour around you.’15Why are your mighty ones face down? They do not stand* because the Lord thrust them down.16He made many stumble, and they fell, and they said one to another, ‘Arise, and let us go back to our own people and to the land of our birth, because of the sword of the oppressor.’17Call the name of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, ‘Noisy one who lets the hour go by.’18“As I live, declares the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts, like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea, shall one come.19Prepare yourselves baggage for exile, O inhabitants of Egypt! For Memphis shall become a waste, a ruin, without inhabitant.20“A beautiful heifer is Egypt, but a biting fly from the north has come upon her.21Even her hired soldiers in her midst are like fattened calves; yes, they have turned and fled together; they did not stand, for the day of their calamity has come upon them, the time of their punishment.22“She makes a sound like a serpent gliding away; for her enemies march in force and come against her with axes like those who fell trees.23They shall cut down her forest, declares the Lord, though it is impenetrable, because they are more numerous than locusts; they are without number.24The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame; she shall be delivered into the hand of a people from the north.”25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: “Behold, I am bringing punishment upon Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him.26I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their life, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. Afterward Egypt shall be inhabited as in the days of old, declares the Lord.27“But fear not, O Jacob my servant, nor be dismayed, O Israel, for behold, I will save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid.28Fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord, for I am with you. I will make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”

1خداوند درباره قومهای مختلف با من سخن گفت.2نخستين قوم، مصر بود. در سال چهارم سلطنت يهوياقيم (پسر يوشيا)، پادشاه يهودا، هنگامی كه سپاه نكو، پادشاه مصر، در نبرد كركميش در كنار رود فرات از نبوكدنصر، پادشاه بابل شكست خورد، خداوند دربارهٔ مصريان چنين فرمود:3«سرداران مصری به سربازان دستور میدهند كه سپرها را بردارند و به ميدان جنگ هجوم برند!4اسبها را زين كنند و سوار شوند. كلاهخود بر سر بگذارند، نيزهها را تيز كنند و زره بپوشند.5اما چه میبينم؟ لشكريان مصر از ترس در حال فرار هستند! قویترين سربازانشان بیآنكه به پشت سر نگاه كنند، پا به فرار گذاشتهاند! بلی، ترس و وحشت از هر سو بر آنان هجوم آورده است!6نه قویترين رزمندگانشان و نه سريعترين آنها، هيچيک جان به در نخواهند برد. در شمال، كنار رود فرات، همه میلغزند و میافتند.7«اين كدام سپاه نيرومندی است كه به پيش میرود و همچون رود نيل كه به هنگام طغيان، بالا میآيد، زمينهای اطراف را فرا میگيرد؟8اين لشكر مصر است كه با تكبر ادعا میكند كه مثل طغيان نيل، دنيا را خواهد گرفت و دشمنان را نابود خواهد كرد.9پس ای اسبان و عرابهها و سربازان مصر بياييد! ای اهالی سودان و ليبی كه سپرداران لشكر مصر هستيد، ای لوديان كه كماندارانش میباشيد، به پيش بياييد!10چون امروز، روز خداوند، خدای قادر متعال است! روزی است كه خداوند از دشمنانش انتقام میگيرد. شمشير او آنقدر میكشد تا سير شده، از خون شما مست گردد. امروز خداوند در سرزمين شمال، نزد رود فرات قربانی میگيرد.11ای مردم مصر برای تهيه دارو به جلعاد برويد! ولی برای زخمهای شما علاجی نيست. اگرچه داروهای بسيار مصرف نماييد، اما شفا نخواهيد يافت.12رسوايیتان به گوش همه رسيده و فرياد نااميدی و شكست شما دنيا را پر كرده است. سربازان دلير شما در ميدان جنگ میلغزند و روی هم میافتند.»
آمدن نبوكدنصر
13سپس خداوند دربارهٔ آمدن نبوكدنصر، پادشاه بابل و حملهٔ او به مصر، اين پيغام را به من داد:14«اين خبر را در همهٔ شهرهای مصر اعلام كنيد؛ در شهرهای مجدل، ممفيس و تحفنحيس آن را به گوش همه برسانيد: برخيزيد و آمادهٔ جنگ شويد، چون شمشير هلاكت، همهٔ اطرافيان شما را نابود كرده است!15چرا جنگجويان شما میافتند و بر نمیخيزند؟ چون خداوند آنها را بر زمين كوبيده است.16بسياری از آنها میلغزند و دستهدسته روی هم میافتند. آنگاه سربازان مزدور كه اهل سرزمینهای ديگر هستند، خواهند گفت: ”بياييد به زادگاه خويش و نزد قوم خود برگرديم تا از كشتاری كه در اينجاست، در امان باشيم!“17«نام جديدی به پادشاه مصر بدهيد؛ او را ”طبل توخالی“ بناميد؛ چون سروصدايش زياد است، ولی كاری از دستش برنمیآيد.18من، خداوند قادر متعال كه پادشاه همهٔ جهان هستم، به حيات خود قسم میخورم كه شخصی نيرومند بر مصر هجوم خواهد آورد؛ او مانند كوه تابور كه بلندتر از کوههای ديگر است و مانند كوه كرمل كه در كنار دريا سر به آسمان بركشيده، خواهد بود!19ای مردم مصر، اسباب خود را آماده كنيد و برای تبعيد مهيا شويد، چون شهر ممفيس به کلی ويران خواهد شد و موجود زندهای در آن باقی نخواهد ماند.20مصر مانند يک ماده گوسالهٔ زيباست؛ ولی يک خرمگس او را فراری خواهد داد، خرمگسی كه از شمال خواهد آمد! حتی سربازان مزدور مصر نيز مانند گوسالههای وحشتزده پا به فرار خواهند گذاشت، زيرا روز مصيبت و زمان مجازات ايشان فرا رسيده است.22با نزديک شدن سپاهيان دشمن، مصر مانند مار، صفير زنان خزيده، خواهد گريخت. آنها تيشه به ريشهٔ مردم مصر خواهند زد، همانطور كه چوب برها درختان را میبرند و جنگل انبوه را صاف میكنند. زيرا لشكر دشمن مانند دستهٔ ملخها بیشمارند.24مردم مصر با سرافكندگی مغلوب اين قوم شمالی خواهند شد.»25خداوند قادر متعال، خدای اسرائيل میفرمايد: «من بت آمون، خدای شهر تبس و بتهای ديگر مصر را نابود خواهم كرد. پادشاه و تمام كسانی را نيز كه به او اميد بستهاند، مكافات خواهم رساند،26و ايشان را به دست كسانی كه تشنهٔ خونشان هستند تسليم خواهم نمود، يعنی به دست نبوكدنصر، پادشاه بابل و سپاه او. ولی بعد از اين دوره، سرزمين مصر مجدداً آباد خواهد شد و مردم در آن زندگی خواهند كرد.27«ولی ای فرزندان بندهٔ من يعقوب، نترسيد؛ ای بنیاسرائيل، هراس به خود راه ندهيد! من شما و فرزندانتان را از نقاط دور دست و از سرزمين تبعيد، به وطنتان باز خواهم گرداند و شما در امنيت و آسايش زندگی خواهيد كرد و ديگر كسی باعث ترس شما نخواهد شد.28ای فرزندان بندهٔ من يعقوب، نترسيد! چون من با شما هستم؛ حتی اگر قومهايی را كه شما را در ميانشان پراكنده كردم، به کلی تار و مار كنم، ولی شما را از بين نخواهم برد؛ البته شما را هرگز بیسزا نخواهم گذارد؛ بلی، شما را يقيناً تنبيه خواهم نمود، ولی منصفانه و عادلانه.»
