1All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.2Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”3But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”4So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”5And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.6Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.7And he called the name of the place Massah* and Meribah,* because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Israel Defeats Amalek
8Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”10So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.11Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.12But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.13And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.14Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”15And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner,16saying, “A hand upon the throne* of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

1بنیاسرائيل به دستور خداوند از صحرای سين كوچ كردند و پس از چند توقف كوتاه، در رفيديم اردو زدند. اما وقتی به آنجا رسيدند، ديدند كه در آن مكان نيز آب برای نوشيدن پيدا نمیشود.2پس گله و شكايت آغاز كردند و به موسی گفتند: «به ما آب بده تا بنوشيم.» موسی جواب داد: «چرا گله و شكايت میكنيد؟ چرا خداوند را امتحان مینماييد؟»3اما آنها كه از تشنگی بیتاب شده بودند، فرياد زدند: «چرا ما را از مصر بيرون آوردی؟ آيا ما را به اينجا آوردی تا با فرزندان و گلههای خود از تشنگی بميريم؟»4موسی به حضور خداوند رفت و گفت: «من با اين قوم چه كنم؟ هر آن ممكن است مرا سنگسار كنند.»5خداوند در جواب موسی فرمود: «برخی از بزرگان بنیاسرائيل را همراه خود بردار و پيشاپيش مردم به طرف كوه حوريب حركت كن. من در آنجا كنار صخره، پيش تو خواهم ايستاد. با همان عصايی كه به رود نيل زدی، به صخره بزن تا آب از آن جاری شود و قوم بنوشند.» موسی همانطور كه خداوند به او دستور داد، عمل كرد و آب از صخره جاری شد.7موسی اسم آنجا را مسّا (يعنی«قوم، خداوند را امتحان كردند») گذاشت؛ ولی بعضی اسم آنجا را مريبه (يعنی«محل بحث و مجادله») گذاشتند، چون در آنجا قوم اسرائيل به مجادله با خداوند پرداختند و گفتند: «آيا خداوند در ميان ما هست يا نه؟» و به اين ترتيب او را امتحان كردند.
جنگ با عمالایقیها
8عماليقیها به رفيديم آمدند تا با بنیاسرائيل بجنگند.9موسی به يوشع گفت: «افرادی از قوم انتخاب كن و فردا به جنگ عماليقیها برو. من عصای خدا را به دست گرفته بر فراز تپه خواهم ايستاد.»10پس يوشع طبق دستور موسی به جنگ عماليقیها رفت و موسی و هارون و حور* به بالای تپه رفتند.11موسی دستهای خود را به طرف آسمان بلند كرد. تا زمانی كه دستهای موسی بالا بود، جنگاوران اسرائيلی پيروز میشدند، اما هر وقت دستهای خود را از خستگی پايين میآورد، عماليقیها بر آنان چيره میگشتند.12سرانجام موسی خسته شد و ديگر نتوانست دستهای خود را بالا ببرد. پس هارون و حور، او را روی سنگی نشاندند و از دو طرف دستهای او را تا غروب آفتاب بالا نگه داشتند.13در نتيجه، يوشع و سپاهيان او، عماليقیها را به کلی تار و مار كردند.14آنگاه خداوند به موسی فرمود: «شرح اين پيروزی را بنويس تا به يادگار بماند و به يوشع بگو كه من نام و نشان مردم عماليق را از روی زمين محو خواهم كرد.»15موسی در آن مكان يک قربانگاه ساخت و آن را«يهوه نسی» (يعنی«خداوند پرچم پيروزی من است») ناميد.16سپس موسی به قوم اسرائيل گفت: «پرچم خداوند را برافرازيد، زيرا خداوند با مردم عماليق نسل اندر نسل در جنگ خواهد بود.»
