1About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church.2He killed James the brother of John with the sword,3and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread.4And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people.5So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.
Peter Is Rescued
6Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison.7And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands.8And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”9And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.10When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him.11When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”12When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.13And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer.14Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate.15They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!”16But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed.17But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.”* Then he departed and went to another place.18Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.19And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.
The Death of Herod
20Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain,* they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food.21On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them.22And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!”23Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.24But the word of God increased and multiplied.25And Barnabas and Saul returned from* Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark.

کشته شدن يعقوب و زندانی شدن پطرس
1در همين وقت هيروديس پادشاه به آزار و شكنجهٔ عدهای از پيروان مسيح پرداخت.2به دستور او يعقوب برادر يوحنا با شمشير كشته شد.3وقتی هيروديس ديد كه سران يهود اين عمل را پسنديدند، پطرس را نيز در ايام عيد پِسَح يهود دستگير كرد،4و او را به زندان انداخت و دستور داد شانزده سرباز، زندان او را نگهبانی كنند. هيروديس قصد داشت بعد از عيد پسح، پطرس را بيرون آورد تا در ملاء عام محاكمه شود.5ولی در تمام مدتی كه پطرس در زندان بود، مسيحيان برای او مرتب دعا میكردند.
رهايی معجزآسای پطرس از زندان
6شب قبل از آن روزی كه قرار بود پطرس محاكمه شود، او را با دو زنجير بسته بودند و او بين دو سرباز خوابيده بود. سربازان ديگر نيز كنار در زندان كشيک میدادند.7ناگهان محيط زندان نورانی شد و فرشتهٔ خداوند آمد و كنار پطرس ايستاد! سپس به پهلوی پطرس زد و او را بيدار كرد و گفت: «زود برخيز!» همان لحظه زنجيرها از مچ دستهايش باز شد و بر زمين فرو ريخت!8فرشته به او گفت: «لباسها و كفشهايت را بپوش.» پطرس پوشيد. آنگاه فرشته به او گفت: «ردای خود را بر دوش بينداز و به دنبال من بيا!»9به اين ترتيب، پطرس از زندان بيرون آمد و به دنبال فرشته به راه افتاد. ولی در تمام اين مدت تصور میكرد كه خواب میبيند و باور نمیكرد كه بيدار باشد.10پس با هم از حياط اول و دوم زندان گذشتند تا به دروازهٔ آهنی زندان رسيدند كه به كوچهای باز میشد. اين در نيز خودبهخود باز شد! پس، از آنجا هم رد شدند تا به آخر كوچه رسيدند. آنگاه فرشته از او جدا شد.11پطرس كه تازه متوجهٔ ماجرا شده بود، به خود گفت: «پس حقيقت دارد كه خداوند فرشتهٔ خود را فرستاده، مرا از چنگ هيروديس و يهوديان رهايی داده است!»12آنگاه، پس از لحظهای تأمل، به خانهٔ مريم مادر يوحنا معروف به مرقس رفت. در آنجا عدهٔ زيادی برای دعا گرد آمده بودند.13پطرس در زد و دختری به نام رُدا آمد تا در را باز كند.14وقتی صدای پطرس را شنيد، ذوق زده بازگشت تا به همه مژده دهد كه پطرس در میزند.15ولی آنان حرف او را باور نكردند و گفتند: «مگر ديوانه شدهای؟» بالاخره، وقتی ديدند اصرار میكند، گفتند: «پس حتماً او را كشتهاند و حالا اين روح اوست كه به اينجا آمده است!»16ولی پطرس بیوقفه در میزد. سرانجام رفتند و در را باز كردند. وقتی ديدند خود پطرس است، مات و مبهوت ماندند.17پطرس اشاره كرد كه آرام باشند و تعريف كرد كه چه اتفاقی افتاده و چطور خداوند او را از زندان بيرون آورده است. پيش از رفتن نيز از ايشان خواست تا يعقوب و ساير برادران را آگاه سازند. بعد به جای امنتری رفت.18صبح در زندان غوغايی بپا شد. همه پطرس را جستجو میكردند.19وقتی هيروديس به دنبال او فرستاد و فهميد كه در زندان نيست، هر شانزده نگهبان را بازداشت كرد و حكم اعدامشان را صادر نمود. آنگاه يهوديه را ترک كرده، به قيصريه رفت و مدتی در آنجا ماند.
مرگ هيروديس
20وقتی هيروديس در قيصريه بود، هيئتی از نمايندگان شهرهای صور و صيدون به ديدن او آمدند. هيروديس نسبت به اهالی اين دو شهر خصومت عميقی داشت. پس ايشان حمايت بلاستوس وزير دربار او را به دست آوردند و از هيروديس تقاضای صلح كردند، زيرا اقتصاد شهرهای آنان به داد و ستد با سرزمين او بستگی داشت.21سرانجام اجازهٔ شرفيابی گرفتند. در آن روز هيروديس لباس شاهانهای پوشيد و بر تخت سلطنت نشست و نطقی ايراد كرد.22وقتی صحبت او تمام شد، مردم او را مثل خدا پرستش كردند و فريادزنان میگفتند كه اين صدای خداست، نه صدای انسان!23همان لحظه فرشتهٔ خداوند هيروديس را چنان زد كه بدنش پر از كرم شد و مرد، زيرا به جای اينكه خدا را تمجيد كند، گذاشت مردم او را پرستش كنند.24اما پيغام خدا به سرعت به همه میرسيد و تعداد ايمانداران روزبهروز بيشتر میشد.25برنابا و پولس نيز به اورشليم رفتند و هدايای مسيحيان را به كليسا دادند و بعد به شهر انطاكيه بازگشتند. در اين سفر يوحنا معروف به مرقس را نيز با خود بردند.
