Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

1 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people: 2 “Thus says the Lord: He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live. 3 Thus says the Lord: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.” 4 Then the officials said to the king, “Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.” 5 King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.” 6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

Jeremiah Rescued from the Cistern

7 When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate— 8 Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king, 9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes. 12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. 13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

14 King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the Lord. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.” 15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As the Lord lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.” 17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18 But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” 19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” 20 Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the Lord in what I say to you, and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is the vision which the Lord has shown to me: 22 Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying, “‘Your trusted friends have deceived you and prevailed against you; now that your feet are sunk in the mud, they turn away from you.’ 23 All your wives and your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.” 24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25 If the officials hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you shall say to them, ‘I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” 27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard. 28 And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

Jeremías en la cisterna

1 Sefatías hijo de Matán, Guedalías hijo de Pasur, Jucal hijo de Selemías, y Pasur hijo de Malquías, oyeron que Jeremías le decía a todo el pueblo: 2 «Así dice el Señor: “El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá de hambre, por la espada o por la peste. Pero el que se pase a los babilonios vivirá. ¡Se entregará como botín de guerra, pero salvará su vida!” 3 Así dice el Señor: “Esta ciudad caerá en poder del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y será capturada.” » 4 Los jefes le dijeron al rey: —Hay que matar a este hombre. Con semejantes discursos está desmoralizando a los soldados y a todo el pueblo que aún quedan en esta ciudad. Este hombre no busca el bien del pueblo, sino su desgracia. 5 El rey Sedequías respondió: —Lo dejo en sus manos. Ni yo, que soy el rey, puedo oponerme a ustedes. 6 Ellos tomaron a Jeremías y, bajándolo con cuerdas, lo echaron en la cisterna del patio de la guardia, la cual era de Malquías, el hijo del rey. Pero como en la cisterna no había agua, sino lodo, Jeremías se hundió en él. 7 El etíope Ebedmélec, funcionario* de la casa real, se enteró de que habían echado a Jeremías en la cisterna. En cierta ocasión cuando el rey estaba participando en una sesión frente al portón de Benjamín, 8 Ebedmélec salió del palacio real y le dijo: 9 —Mi rey y señor, estos hombres han actuado con saña. Han arrojado a Jeremías en la cisterna, y allí se morirá de hambre, porque ya no hay pan en la ciudad. 10 Entonces el rey ordenó al etíope Ebedmélec: —Toma contigo tres* hombres, y rescata de la cisterna al profeta Jeremías antes de que se muera. 11 Ebedmélec lo hizo así, y fue al depósito de ropa* del palacio real, sacó de allí ropas y trapos viejos, y con unas sogas se los bajó a la cisterna a Jeremías. 12 Ebedmélec le dijo a Jeremías: —Ponte en los sobacos estas ropas y trapos viejos, para protegerte de las sogas. Así lo hizo Jeremías. 13 Los hombres tiraron de las sogas y lo sacaron de la cisterna. Y Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia.

Sedequías interroga a Jeremías

14 El rey Sedequías mandó que llevaran a Jeremías a la tercera entrada de la casa del Señor, y allí le dijo: —Te voy a preguntar algo, y por favor no me ocultes nada. 15 Jeremías le respondió al rey: —Si respondo a la pregunta de Su Majestad, lo más seguro es que me mate. Y si le doy un consejo, no me va a hacer caso. 16 Pero en secreto el rey Sedequías le hizo este juramento a Jeremías: —¡Te juro por el Señor, que nos ha dado esta vida, que no te mataré ni te entregaré en manos de estos hombres que atentan contra tu vida! 17 Jeremías le dijo a Sedequías: —Así dice el Señor Todopoderoso, el Dios de Israel: “Si Su Majestad se rinde ante los jefes del rey de Babilonia, salvará su vida, y esta ciudad no será incendiada; Su Majestad y su familia vivirán. 18 Pero si no se rinde ante los jefes del rey de Babilonia, la ciudad caerá bajo el poder de los caldeos, y será incendiada, y usted no tendrá escapatoria.” 19 El rey Sedequías respondió: —Yo le tengo terror a los judíos que se pasaron al bando de los babilonios, pues me pueden entregar en sus manos para que me torturen. 20 Jeremías le contestó: —Obedezca Su Majestad la voz del Señor que yo le estoy comunicando, y no caerá en manos de los babilonios. Así le irá bien a usted, y salvará su vida. 21 Pero si Su Majestad se empecina en no rendirse, ésta es la palabra que el Señor me ha revelado: 22 Todas las mujeres que aún quedan en el palacio del rey de Judá serán entregadas a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, y ellas mismas le echarán en cara: »“Tus amigos más confiables te han engañado y te han vencido. Tienes los pies hundidos en el fango, pues tus amigos te dieron la espalda.” 23 »Todas las mujeres y los hijos de Su Majestad serán entregados a los babilonios, y ni Su Majestad podrá escapar, sino que caerá bajo el poder del rey de Babilonia, y la ciudad será incendiada. 24 Sedequías le contestó a Jeremías: —Que nadie se entere de estas palabras, pues de lo contrario morirás. 25 Si los jefes se enteran de que yo hablé contigo, y vienen y te dicen: “Dinos ya lo que le has informado al rey, y lo que él te dijo; no nos ocultes nada, pues de lo contrario te mataremos”, 26 tú les dirás: “Vine a suplicarle al rey que no me mandara de vuelta a casa de Jonatán, a morir allí.” 27 Y así fue. Todos los jefes vinieron a interrogar a Jeremías, pero él les contestó de acuerdo con lo que el rey le había ordenado. Entonces lo dejaron tranquilo, porque nadie había escuchado la conversación. 28 Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la guardia hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue capturada.
