The Triumphal Entry

1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus* sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

15 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 16 And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. 19 And when evening came they* went out of the city.

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received* it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”*

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Der Einzug in Jerusalem

1 Als sie nicht mehr weit von Jerusalem entfernt waren, kurz vor Betfage und Betanien am Ölberg, schickte Jesus zwei seiner Jünger voraus. 2 Er gab ihnen folgende Anweisung: »Geht in das Dorf, das ihr vor euch seht. Gleich beim Ortseingang werdet ihr einen Esel finden, der angebunden ist, ein junges Tier*, auf dem noch nie ein Mensch geritten ist. Bindet es los und bringt es her. 3 Und sollte euch jemand fragen, warum ihr das tut, dann antwortet: ›Der Herr braucht das Tier; er wird es nachher sofort wieder zurückbringen lassen.‹« 4 Die beiden machten sich auf den Weg und fanden tatsächlich draußen auf der Gasse einen jungen Esel an einem Tor angebunden. Als sie ihn losmachten, 5 fragten einige, die dort standen: »Was tut ihr da? Warum bindet ihr das Tier los?« 6 Sie antworteten so, wie Jesus es ihnen gesagt hatte, und man ließ sie gewähren. 7 Sie brachten den Esel zu Jesus, legten ihre Mäntel über das Tier, und er setzte sich darauf. 8 Viele breiteten ihre Mäntel auf dem Weg aus; andere hieben auf den Feldern Zweige von den Bäumen ab und legten sie auf den Weg. 9 Vor und hinter Jesus drängten sich die Menschen und riefen: »Gepriesen sei Gott!* ›Gesegnet sei er, der im Namen des Herrn kommt!‹ 10 Gesegnet sei das Reich unseres Vaters David, das ´nun` kommt! Gepriesen sei Gott in der Höhe!*« 11 So zog Jesus in Jerusalem ein. Er ging in den Tempel und sah sich dort alles an. Dann kehrte er, da es inzwischen spät geworden war, mit den Zwölf nach Betanien zurück.

Die Verfluchung des Feigenbaums

12 Als sie am nächsten Tag Betanien wieder verließen, hatte Jesus Hunger. 13 Da sah er von weitem einen Feigenbaum, der schon Blätter hatte. Er ging hin, um zu sehen, ob auch Früchte an dem Baum waren; doch er fand nur Blätter daran. Es war allerdings auch nicht die Zeit der Feigen.* 14 Da sagte Jesus zu dem Baum: »Nie wieder soll jemand von dir Feigen essen!« Das hörten auch seine Jünger.

Jesus im Tempel

15 In Jerusalem angekommen, ging Jesus in den Tempel und fing an, alle hinauszuweisen, die dort Handel trieben oder etwas kauften. Er warf die Tische der Geldwechsler und die Sitze der Taubenverkäufer um 16 und duldete auch nicht, dass jemand etwas über den Tempelhof trug*. 17 Zur Erklärung sagte er ihnen*: »Heißt es nicht in der Schrift: ›Mein Haus soll ein Haus des Gebetes sein für alle Völker*‹? Ihr aber habt eine Räuberhöhle daraus gemacht!« 18 Als die führenden Priester und die Schriftgelehrten davon hörten, suchten sie nach einer Möglichkeit, Jesus zu beseitigen. Sie hatten nämlich* Angst vor ihm, weil das ganze Volk von seiner Lehre tief beeindruckt war. 19 Am* Abend verließ Jesus mit seinen Jüngern die Stadt.

Verheißung für den, der glaubt

20 Früh am nächsten Morgen kamen sie wieder an dem Feigenbaum vorbei und sahen, dass er bis zu den Wurzeln verdorrt war. 21 Da erinnerte sich Petrus an Jesu Worte und rief: »Rabbi, sieh nur, der Feigenbaum, den du verflucht hast, ist verdorrt!« 22 Jesus erwiderte: »Habt Glauben an Gott! 23 Ich sage euch: Wenn jemand zu diesem Berg hier sagt: ›Heb dich empor und stürz dich ins Meer!‹ und wenn er dabei in seinem Herzen nicht zweifelt, sondern glaubt, dass das, was er sagt, geschieht, wird es eintreffen*. 24 Darum sage ich euch: Wenn ihr betet und um etwas bittet, dann glaubt, dass ihr es empfangen habt, und die Bitte wird euch erfüllt werden, was immer es auch sei. 25 Und wenn ihr beten wollt* und etwas gegen jemand habt, dann vergebt ihm, damit euer Vater im Himmel euch eure Verfehlungen auch vergibt.*«

Die Frage nach der Vollmacht Jesu

27 Sie kamen wieder nach Jerusalem. Als Jesus im Tempel umherging, traten die führenden Priester, die Schriftgelehrten und die Ältesten zu ihm 28 und fragten: »Woher nimmst du dir das Recht, das alles zu tun?* Wer hat dir die Vollmacht gegeben, so zu handeln?« 29 »Ich will euch eine Gegenfrage stellen«, erwiderte Jesus. »Beantwortet sie mir, und ich werde euch sagen, woher ich die Vollmacht habe, so zu handeln. 30 Die Taufe des Johannes – stammte sie vom Himmel oder von Menschen? Was ist eure Antwort?« 31 Sie überlegten miteinander hin und her: »Wenn wir antworten: ›Vom Himmel‹, wird er sagen: ›Warum habt ihr Johannes dann nicht geglaubt?‹ 32 Sollen wir also antworten: ›Von Menschen‹?« Doch ´das wagten sie nicht,` weil sie vor dem Volk Angst hatten; denn das ganze Volk war der Ansicht, dass Johannes wirklich ein Prophet gewesen war. 33 Schließlich gaben sie Jesus zur Antwort: »Wir wissen es nicht.« Da erwiderte er: »Dann sage ich euch auch nicht, woher ich die Vollmacht habe, so zu handeln.«
