Moses Commands Obedience

1 “And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules* that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you. 3 Your eyes have seen what the Lord did at Baal-peor, for the Lord your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor. 4 But you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today. 5 See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children— 10 how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13 And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments,* and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess.

Idolatry Forbidden

15 “Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16 beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. 19 And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. 20 But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day. 21 Furthermore, the Lord was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I should not cross the Jordan, and that I should not enter the good land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. 22 For I must die in this land; I must not go over the Jordan. But you shall go over and take possession of that good land. 23 Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make a carved image, the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. 25 “When you father children and children’s children, and have grown old in the land, if you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and by doing what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to anger, 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed. 27 And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord will drive you. 28 And there you will serve gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands, that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. 29 But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.

The Lord Alone Is God

32 “For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. 33 Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? 34 Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him. 36 Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them* and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, 38 driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39 know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40 Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

Cities of Refuge

41 Then Moses set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan, 42 that the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life: 43 Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

Introduction to the Law

44 This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel. 45 These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the rules, which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt, 46 beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. 47 And they took possession of his land and the land of Og, the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan; 48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount Sirion* (that is, Hermon), 49 together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

1 Und nun, Volk Israel, höre auf die Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen, die ich euch verkünde. Wenn ihr sie befolgt, werdet ihr leben und das Land in Besitz nehmen, das der HERR, der Gott eurer Vorfahren, euch geben wird. 2 Fügt den Geboten, die ich euch verkünde, nichts hinzu und lasst nichts davon weg. Denn es sind die Gebote des HERRN, eures Gottes – und ihr sollt sie befolgen. 3 Mit eigenen Augen habt ihr gesehen, was der HERR, euer Gott, beim Berg Pegor* getan hat: Er hat jeden, der den Götzen Baal von Pegor angebetet hat, aus eurer Mitte gerissen und getötet. 4 Ihr aber habt dem HERRN, eurem Gott, die Treue gehalten, deshalb seid ihr am Leben geblieben. 5 Ich verkünde euch jetzt die Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen, die der HERR, mein Gott, mir für euch gegeben hat. Nach ihnen sollt ihr euch richten, wenn ihr in dem Land lebt, das ihr nun in Besitz nehmt. 6 Beachtet sie genau und handelt danach. Dann werdet ihr bei euren Nachbarvölkern für eure Weisheit und Einsicht berühmt sein. Wenn sie von euren Gesetzen hören, werden sie sagen: »Wie weise und verständig ist dieses große Volk!« 7 Kein anderes Volk – und sei es noch so groß – hat Götter, die ihm so nah sind, wie der HERR, unser Gott, uns nah ist! Wann immer wir zu ihm rufen, hört er uns. 8 Und kein anderes Volk – und sei es noch so groß – hat Ordnungen und Bestimmungen, die so gerecht sind, wie das Gesetz, das ich euch jetzt verkünde.

Israel darf sich kein Götterbild machen

9 Nehmt euch in Acht* und hütet euch zu vergessen, was ihr mit eigenen Augen gesehen habt! Behaltet es euer Leben lang in euren Herzen und erzählt euren Kindern und Enkeln davon. 10 Denkt vor allem an den Tag, als ihr am Berg Horeb vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott, standet. Der HERR hatte zu mir gesagt: »Ruf das Volk zusammen. Sie sollen hören, was ich ihnen zu sagen habe, und lernen, mir in Ehrfurcht zu begegnen, solange sie leben. Und auch ihren Kindern sollen sie weitergeben, was ich sie heute lehre.« 11 So versammeltet ihr euch am Fuß des Berges. Der Berg stand in Flammen, die bis zum Himmel* loderten, und war ringsum von Dunkelheit und schwarzen Wolken umgeben. 12 Aus dem Feuer sprach der HERR zu euch. Ihr konntet hören, was er sagte, aber seine Gestalt habt ihr nicht gesehen. Es war nur eine Stimme zu hören. 13 Er verkündete euch die Verpflichtungen, die sein Bund euch auferlegt – die zehn Gebote* –, und schrieb sie auf zwei Steintafeln. 14 Mir befahl der HERR damals, euch seine Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen zu lehren. Denn ihr sollt euch nach ihnen richten, wenn ihr in dem Land lebt, das ihr nun bald betreten und in Besitz nehmen werdet. 15 Nehmt euch also in Acht: Als der HERR am Berg Horeb aus dem Feuer zu euch sprach, habt ihr keinerlei Gestalt gesehen. 16 Darum fertigt euch niemals ein Götterbild an. Das wäre ein schlimmes Vergehen, ganz egal, welche Gestalt ihr ihm gebt – ob es einem Mann oder einer Frau gleicht, 17 einem Landtier, einem Vogel*, 18 einem Kriechtier oder einem Fisch*. 19 Und wenn ihr zum Himmel schaut und dort die Sonne, den Mond und die Sterne seht – das ganze Himmelsheer –, dann lasst euch nicht dazu verleiten, vor ihnen niederzufallen und sie zu verehren. Denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat sie den anderen Völkern zugeteilt – die mögen sie anbeten*. 20 Euch jedoch hat er erwählt und aus Ägypten gerettet wie aus einem glühenden Ofen, damit ihr sein Volk werdet, sein besonderes Eigentum – und das seid ihr jetzt. 21 Auf mich wurde der HERR euretwegen zornig und schwor, dass ich den Jordan nicht überschreiten und das gute Land nicht betreten würde, das er euch zum bleibenden Besitz geben wird. 22 Deshalb werde ich hier auf dieser Seite des Jordans sterben. Ihr aber werdet ihn überqueren und das gute Land auf der anderen Seite in Besitz nehmen. 23 Hütet euch, den Bund zu vergessen, den der HERR, euer Gott, mit euch geschlossen hat. Fertigt euch niemals ein Götterbild an, gleich welcher Gestalt. Das hat er euch verboten. 24 Denn der HERR, euer Gott, ist ein Feuer, das alles verzehrt. Er ist ein leidenschaftlicher Gott, der keinen neben sich duldet.*

Dem untreuen Volk steht die Rückkehr offen

25 Wenn ihr nun lange im Land Kanaan lebt und dort Kinder und Enkel bekommt, könntet ihr versucht sein, euch ein Götterbild in der Gestalt irgendeines Lebewesens anzufertigen. Das würde dem HERRN, eurem Gott, sehr missfallen und seinen Zorn herausfordern. 26 Heute rufe ich Himmel und Erde als Zeugen an: Wenn ihr so etwas tut, werdet ihr innerhalb kürzester Zeit wieder aus dem Land verschwunden sein, das ihr jetzt in Besitz nehmt*. Ihr werdet nicht länger darin wohnen, keiner von euch wird mehr dort zu finden sein. 27 Der HERR wird euch unter die anderen Völker zerstreuen, und nur ein kleiner Rest von euch wird in den fremden Ländern überleben, in die er euch verbannen wird. 28 Dort müsst ihr Göttern dienen, die von Menschen gemacht sind, Bildern aus Holz und Stein, die weder sehen noch hören noch schmecken noch riechen können. 29 Dann werdet ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, suchen. Ihr werdet ihn finden, wenn ihr von ganzem Herzen und mit ganzer Hingabe* nach ihm fragt. 30 Wenn euch eines Tages* alle diese Dinge treffen und ihr in große Not geratet, dann werdet ihr wieder zum HERRN, eurem Gott, umkehren und auf seine Stimme hören. 31 Der HERR, euer Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott. Er wird euch nicht fallen lassen und euch nicht vernichten. Den Bund, den er euren Vorfahren mit einem Eid zugesagt hat, wird er niemals vergessen. 32 Durchforscht die Ereignisse der Vergangenheit, alles, was sich zugetragen hat, seit Gott die Menschen erschaffen hat. Sucht in der ganzen Welt von einem Ende bis zum anderen*: Ist jemals etwas so Großartiges geschehen? Hat man jemals etwas Vergleichbares gehört? 33 Hat jemals ein Volk die Stimme Gottes* mitten aus dem Feuer gehört – so wie ihr – und ist dabei am Leben geblieben? 34 Oder hat jemals ein Gott auch nur den Versuch gemacht, ein Volk aus einem anderen Volk herauszuholen und es zu seinem Eigentum zu machen, wie es der HERR, euer Gott, in Ägypten für euch getan hat? Vor euren Augen erwies er seine Macht durch Zeichen und Wunder. Mit starker Hand und ausgestrecktem Arm kämpfte er gegen eure Feinde und versetzte sie in Angst und Schrecken. 35 Das alles habt ihr gesehen, damit ihr erkennt: Der HERR allein ist Gott. Es gibt keinen außer ihm. 36 Er ließ euch seine Stimme aus dem Himmel hören, um euch zu unterweisen. Er ließ euch hier auf der Erde sein gewaltiges Feuer sehen und sprach zu euch aus den Flammen heraus. 37 Weil er eure Vorfahren geliebt hat, darum hat er euch als sein Volk auserwählt*. Er war mit euch und hat* euch mit seiner großen Macht aus Ägypten herausgeführt. 38 Nun vertreibt er Völker vor euch, die größer und stärker sind als ihr. Denn er will euch in ihr Land bringen und es euch zum bleibenden Besitz geben, wie ihr es jetzt erlebt. 39 So erkennt nun und nehmt euch zu Herzen: Der HERR allein ist Gott im Himmel und auf der Erde. Es gibt keinen Gott außer ihm. 40 Richtet euch nach seinen Ordnungen und Geboten, die ich euch heute gebe. Dann wird es euch und euren Nachkommen gut gehen, und ihr werdet lange in dem Land leben, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch für immer geben will.

Zufluchtsstädte im Ostjordanland

41 Damals bestimmte Mose drei Städte östlich des Jordans 42 als Zufluchtsorte für Totschläger. Wenn jemand seinen Mitmenschen unabsichtlich und nicht aus Hass getötet hatte, konnte er in eine dieser Städte fliehen und so sein Leben retten. 43 Im Gebiet des Stammes Ruben wählte Mose die Stadt Bezer in der Steppe auf der Hochebene, im Gebiet des Stammes Gad die Stadt Ramot in Gilead und im Gebiet des halben Stammes Manasse die Stadt Golan im Land Baschan.

Mose lehrt die Israeliten das Gesetz

44 Es folgt nun das Gesetz, das Mose den Israeliten verkündete. 45 Alle diese Gebote, Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen trug Mose den Israeliten vor, als sie vierzig Jahre nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten 46 im östlichen Jordantal angekommen waren. Sie lagerten gegenüber von Bet-Pegor im ehemaligen Gebiet des Amoriterkönigs Sihon von Heschbon. Mose und die Israeliten hatten Sihon nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten vernichtend geschlagen 47 und sein Land in Besitz genommen, dazu auch das Land Baschan, über das König Og regiert hatte. Das ganze Gebiet der beiden Amoriterkönige östlich des Jordans hatten sie eingenommen, 48 von Aroër am Ufer des Arnons bis zum Berg Sion, der besser bekannt ist unter dem Namen Hermon, 49 außerdem das östliche Jordantal bis hinunter zum Toten Meer und zum Fuß des Berges Pisga.
