The Greatest Commandment

1 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules*—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. 4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.* 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth. 16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised. 20 “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

1 Dies sind die Gebote, Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen, die ich euch nach dem Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottes, lehren soll. Nach ihnen sollt ihr euch richten, wenn ihr in dem Land lebt, das ihr nun bald betreten und in Besitz nehmen werdet. 2 Euer Leben lang sollt ihr und eure Nachkommen Ehrfurcht vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott, haben und alle seine Ordnungen und Gebote halten, die ich euch verkünde. Dann wird der HERR euch ein langes Leben schenken.* 3 Hört also, ihr Israeliten, und befolgt Gottes Gebote genau. Dann wird es euch gut gehen und ihr werdet zu einem großen Volk in dem Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt. Das hat der HERR, der Gott eurer Vorfahren, euch versprochen. 4 Höre Israel! Der HERR ist unser Gott, der HERR allein.* 5 Du sollst den HERRN, deinen Gott, lieben* von ganzem Herzen, mit ganzer Hingabe* und mit all deiner Kraft. 6 Bewegt diese Gebote, die ich euch heute weitergebe, in eurem Herzen.* 7 Prägt sie euren Kindern ein. Sagt sie euch immer wieder vor, ob ihr nun zu Hause oder unterwegs seid, ob ihr euch hinlegt oder ob ihr aufsteht. 8 Schreibt sie euch auf und bindet sie euch zur Erinnerung um die Hand und auf die Stirn*. 9 Schreibt sie auch an die Türpfosten eurer Häuser und an eure Stadttore.

Vergesst den Herrn nicht und werdet ihm nicht untreu

10 Der HERR, euer Gott, bringt euch jetzt in das Land, das er euch zum Besitz geben will, wie er es euren Vorfahren Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid zugesagt hat. Dort gibt es große und schöne Städte, die ihr nicht erbaut habt, 11 Häuser voller Güter, die ihr nicht erworben habt, Zisternen, die ihr nicht ausgehauen, und Weinberge und Olivenhaine, die ihr nicht gepflanzt habt. Ihr werdet davon essen können, so viel ihr wollt. 12 Achtet dann darauf, dass ihr den HERRN nicht vergesst, der euch aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten befreit hat. 13 Habt Ehrfurcht vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott, und dient ihm allein. Schwört nur bei seinem Namen! 14 Lauft nicht den Göttern eurer Nachbarvölker hinterher. 15 Denn der HERR, euer Gott, ist ein leidenschaftlicher Gott, der keinen neben sich duldet*. Er wohnt mitten unter euch. Wenn ihr ihm untreu werdet*, wird sein Zorn euch treffen und er wird euch vom Erdboden vertilgen. 16 Fordert den HERRN nicht heraus, wie ihr es bei Massa getan habt. 17 Beachtet genau die Gebote, Weisungen und Ordnungen, die er euch gegeben hat, und lebt nach ihnen. 18 Tut, was in seinen Augen richtig und gut ist. Dann wird es euch gut gehen und ihr werdet das schöne Land in Besitz nehmen, das der HERR euren Vorfahren mit einem Eid zugesagt hat. 19 Ihr werdet alle eure Feinde* aus dem Land vertreiben, so wie der HERR es euch angekündigt hat.

20 Wenn eure Kinder euch später fragen: »Warum hat der HERR, unser Gott, euch diese Gebote, Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen gegeben?«, 21 dann antwortet ihnen: »Wir waren einmal Sklaven des Pharaos in Ägypten, aber der HERR hat uns mit starker Hand dort herausgeführt. 22 Wir haben mit eigenen Augen gesehen, wie er Zeichen und Wunder getan und schreckliches Unheil über den Pharao und seine Familie und über alle Ägypter gebracht hat. 23 Uns aber hat er dort herausgeholt, um uns in das Land zu bringen, das er unseren Vorfahren mit einem Eid zugesagt hat. 24 Der HERR, unser Gott, hat uns befohlen, uns nach all diesen Ordnungen zu richten und Ehrfurcht vor ihm zu haben. Dann wird es uns immer gut gehen, und er wird uns am Leben erhalten, wie es ja nun der Fall ist. 25 Wenn wir die Gebote genau befolgen, wie der HERR es uns befohlen hat, dann können wir vor ihm bestehen*.«
