Land Still to Be Conquered

1 Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. 2 This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites 3 (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim, 4 in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, 5 and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath, 6 all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. 7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

8 With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh* the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: 9 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. 14 To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him. 15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages. 24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,* 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages. 29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans. 32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.

1 Da nun Josua alt war und hochbetagt, sprach der HERR zu ihm: Du bist alt geworden und hochbetagt, und vom Lande bleibt noch sehr viel einzunehmen. 2 Dies ist das Land, das noch übrig ist: alle Gebiete der Philister und ganz Geschur, 3 vom Schihor an, der vor Ägypten fließt, bis zum Gebiet Ekrons nach Norden, das den Kanaanitern zugerechnet wird, fünf Fürsten der Philister, nämlich von Gaza, Aschdod, Aschkelon, Gat und Ekron, und dazu die Awiter 4 im Süden; das ganze Land der Kanaaniter und Meara, das den Sidoniern gehört, bis Afek, bis an die Grenze der Amoriter; 5 dazu das Land der Gebaliter und der ganze Libanon gegen Sonnenaufgang, von Baal-Gad am Fuße des Gebirges Hermon bis dorthin, wo es nach Hamat geht. 6 Alle, die auf dem Gebirge wohnen, vom Libanon an bis nach Misrefot-Majim, alle Sidonier: Ich will sie vertreiben vor den Israeliten; wirf nur das Los darum, um sie auszuteilen unter Israel, wie ich dir geboten habe. 7 So verteile nun dies Land als Erbbesitz unter die neun Stämme und den halben Stamm Manasse. 8 Der andere halbe Stamm Manasse und mit ihm die Rubeniter und Gaditer haben ihr Erbteil empfangen, das ihnen Mose gab jenseits des Jordans im Osten, wie es ihnen Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, gegeben hatte 9 von Aroër an, das am Ufer des Arnonflusses liegt, und von der Stadt mitten im Tal und die ganze Ebene von Medeba bis Dibon 10 und alle Städte Sihons, des Königs der Amoriter, der in Heschbon herrschte, bis an die Grenze der Ammoniter, 11 dazu Gilead und das Gebiet von Geschur und Maacha und das ganze Gebirge Hermon und ganz Baschan bis Salcha, 12 das ganze Reich des Og von Baschan, der in Aschtarot und Edreï herrschte und der noch übrig geblieben war von den Riesen. Mose aber hatte sie geschlagen und vertrieben. 13 Die Israeliten vertrieben aber die Geschuriter und Maachatiter nicht, sondern es wohnten beide, Geschur und Maacha, mitten unter Israel bis auf diesen Tag. 14 Aber dem Stamm der Leviten gab er kein Erbteil; denn die Feueropfer des HERRN, des Gottes Israels, gehören ihnen; er selbst ist ihr Erbteil, wie er ihnen zugesagt hat.

15 So gab Mose dem Stamm der Söhne Ruben nach ihren Geschlechtern 16 als ihr Gebiet: das Land von Aroër an, das am Ufer des Arnonflusses liegt, und die Stadt mitten im Tal mit der ganzen Ebene bei Medeba; 17 Heschbon und alle seine Städte, die in der Ebene liegen, Dibon, Bamot-Baal und Bet-Baal-Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemot, Mefaat. 19 Kirjatajim, Sibma, Zeret-Schahar auf dem Berge in der Talebene, 20 Bet-Peor, die Abhänge am Pisga und Bet-Jeschimot 21 und alle Städte der Ebene und das ganze Reich Sihons, des Königs der Amoriter, der in Heschbon herrschte, den Mose geschlagen hatte samt den Fürsten Midians: Ewi, Rekem, Zur, Hur und Reba, den Stadtfürsten Sihons, die im Lande wohnten. 22 Dazu töteten die Israeliten Bileam, den Sohn Beors, den Wahrsager, mit dem Schwert außer den schon von ihnen Erschlagenen. 23 Und die Grenze der Söhne Ruben war der Jordan. Das ist das Erbteil der Söhne Ruben nach ihren Geschlechtern, die Städte mit ihren Gehöften. 24 Dem Stamm der Söhne Gad nach ihren Geschlechtern gab Mose 25 als ihr Gebiet: Jaser und alle Städte in Gilead und das halbe Land der Ammoniter bis Aroër, das östlich von Rabba liegt, 26 und von Heschbon bis Ramat-Mizpe und Betonim und von Mahanajim bis zum Gebiet von Lo-Dabar, 27 dazu im Tal Bet-Haram, Bet-Nimra, Sukkot und Zafon, was übrig war von dem Reich Sihons, des Königs von Heschbon, den Jordan und sein Gebiet bis ans Ende des Sees Kinneret, jenseits des Jordans im Osten. 28 Das ist das Erbteil der Söhne Gad nach ihren Geschlechtern, die Städte mit ihren Gehöften. 29 Dem halben Stamm der Söhne Manasse nach ihren Geschlechtern gab Mose 30 als ihr Gebiet: von Mahanajim an ganz Baschan, das ganze Reich Ogs, des Königs von Baschan, und alle Dörfer Jaïrs, die in Baschan liegen, nämlich sechzig Städte. 31 Und das halbe Gilead, Aschtarot, Edreï, die Königsstädte Ogs von Baschan, gab er den Söhnen Machirs, des Sohnes Manasses, – nämlich der Hälfte der Söhne Machir – nach ihren Geschlechtern. 32 Das sind die Gebiete, die Mose ausgeteilt hat in den Steppen Moabs, jenseits des Jordans östlich von Jericho. 33 Aber dem Stamm Levi gab Mose kein Erbteil; denn der HERR, der Gott Israels, ist selbst ihr Erbteil, wie er ihnen zugesagt hat.
