1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.* 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” 29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

1 Das habe ich zu euch geredet, dass ihr nicht zu Fall kommt. 2 Sie werden euch aus der Synagoge ausstoßen. Es kommt aber die Zeit, dass, wer euch tötet, meinen wird, er tue Gott einen Dienst. 3 Und das werden sie tun, weil sie weder meinen Vater noch mich erkennen. 4 Aber dies habe ich zu euch geredet, damit, wenn ihre Stunde kommen wird, ihr daran denkt, dass ich’s euch gesagt habe. Zu Anfang aber habe ich es euch nicht gesagt, denn ich war bei euch.

5 Jetzt aber gehe ich hin zu dem, der mich gesandt hat; und niemand von euch fragt mich: Wo gehst du hin? 6 Doch weil ich dies zu euch geredet habe, ist euer Herz voll Trauer. 7 Aber ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Es ist gut für euch, dass ich weggehe. Denn wenn ich nicht weggehe, kommt der Tröster nicht zu euch. Wenn ich aber gehe, werde ich ihn zu euch senden. 8 Und wenn er kommt, wird er der Welt die Augen auftun über die Sünde und über die Gerechtigkeit und über das Gericht; 9 über die Sünde: dass sie nicht an mich glauben; 10 über die Gerechtigkeit: dass ich zum Vater gehe und ihr mich hinfort nicht seht; 11 über das Gericht: dass der Fürst dieser Welt gerichtet ist. 12 Ich habe euch noch viel zu sagen; aber ihr könnt es jetzt nicht ertragen. 13 Wenn aber jener kommt, der Geist der Wahrheit, wird er euch in aller Wahrheit leiten. Denn er wird nicht aus sich selber reden; sondern was er hören wird, das wird er reden, und was zukünftig ist, wird er euch verkündigen. 14 Er wird mich verherrlichen; denn von dem Meinen wird er’s nehmen und euch verkündigen. 15 Alles, was der Vater hat, das ist mein. Darum habe ich gesagt: Er nimmt es von dem Meinen und wird es euch verkündigen.

Trauer und Hoffnung bei Jesu Abschied

16 Noch eine kleine Weile, dann werdet ihr mich nicht mehr sehen; und abermals eine kleine Weile, dann werdet ihr mich sehen. 17 Da sprachen einige seiner Jünger untereinander: Was bedeutet das, was er zu uns sagt: Noch eine kleine Weile, dann werdet ihr mich nicht sehen; und abermals eine kleine Weile, dann werdet ihr mich sehen; und: Ich gehe zum Vater? 18 Da sprachen sie: Was bedeutet das, was er sagt: Noch eine kleine Weile? Wir wissen nicht, was er redet. 19 Da merkte Jesus, dass sie ihn fragen wollten, und sprach zu ihnen: Danach fragt ihr euch untereinander, dass ich gesagt habe: Noch eine kleine Weile, dann werdet ihr mich nicht sehen; und abermals eine kleine Weile, dann werdet ihr mich sehen? 20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr werdet weinen und klagen, aber die Welt wird sich freuen; ihr werdet traurig sein, doch eure Traurigkeit soll zur Freude werden. 21 Eine Frau, wenn sie gebiert, so hat sie Schmerzen, denn ihre Stunde ist gekommen. Wenn sie aber das Kind geboren hat, denkt sie nicht mehr an die Angst um der Freude willen, dass ein Mensch zur Welt gekommen ist. 22 Auch ihr habt nun Traurigkeit; aber ich will euch wiedersehen, und euer Herz soll sich freuen, und eure Freude soll niemand von euch nehmen. 23 Und an jenem Tage werdet ihr mich nichts fragen. Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr den Vater um etwas bitten werdet in meinem Namen, wird er’s euch geben. 24 Bisher habt ihr um nichts gebeten in meinem Namen. Bittet, so werdet ihr empfangen, auf dass eure Freude vollkommen sei. 25 Das habe ich euch in Bildern gesagt. Es kommt die Stunde, da ich nicht mehr in Bildern mit euch reden werde, sondern euch frei heraus verkündigen von meinem Vater. 26 An jenem Tage werdet ihr bitten in meinem Namen. Und ich sage euch nicht, dass ich den Vater für euch bitten werde; 27 denn er selbst, der Vater, hat euch lieb, weil ihr mich liebt und glaubt, dass ich von Gott ausgegangen bin. 28 Ich bin vom Vater ausgegangen und in die Welt gekommen; ich verlasse die Welt wieder und gehe zum Vater. 29 Sprechen zu ihm seine Jünger: Siehe, nun redest du frei heraus und nicht in einem Bild. 30 Nun wissen wir, dass du alle Dinge weißt und bedarfst dessen nicht, dass dich jemand fragt. Darum glauben wir, dass du von Gott ausgegangen bist. 31 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Jetzt glaubt ihr? 32 Siehe, es kommt die Stunde und ist schon gekommen, dass ihr zerstreut werdet, ein jeder in das Seine, und mich allein lasst. Aber ich bin nicht allein, denn der Vater ist bei mir. 33 Dies habe ich mit euch geredet, damit ihr in mir Frieden habt. In der Welt habt ihr Angst; aber seid getrost, ich habe die Welt überwunden.
