Gideon’s Three Hundred Men

1 Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. 4 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. 7 And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” 8 So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. 9 That same night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant. 11 And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. 13 When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14 And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.” 15 As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has given the host of Midian into your hand.” 16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”

Gideon Defeats Midian

19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. 22 When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,* as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian. 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. 25 And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan.

Gideons Heer ist zu groß

1 Gideon, den man auch Jerubbaal nannte, brach früh am Morgen mit seinem ganzen Heer auf. Bei der Quelle Harod errichteten sie ihr Lager. Das Lager der Midianiter befand sich nördlich davon in der Ebene, nahe beim Hügel More. 2 Aber der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Dein Heer ist zu groß! So kann ich die Midianiter nicht in eure Hand geben. Sonst werden die Leute von Israel am Ende prahlen und sagen: ›Der eigenen Hand verdanken wir unsere Rettung!‹ 3 Darum lass im ganzen Lager ausrufen, dass alle, die Angst haben, nach Hause gehen.«* Da gingen 22000 wieder heim, nur 10000 blieben bei Gideon. 4 Doch der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Dein Heer ist immer noch zu groß. Führe die Männer hinunter zur Quelle, dort will ich selbst die Auswahl treffen. Ich werde dir sagen, wer mit dir gehen soll und wer nicht.« 5 Gideon führte die Männer zum Teich an der Quelle. Dort sagte der HERR zu ihm: »Wer sich hinwirft und das Wasser mit der Zunge aufleckt wie ein Hund, den stell auf die eine Seite; und wer sich zum Trinken hinkniet, den stell auf die andere.« 6 Dreihundert Männer leckten das Wasser mit der Zunge, alle Übrigen knieten sich hin und führten es mit der hohlen Hand zum Mund.* 7 Der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Durch die 300 Männer, die das Wasser mit der Zunge geleckt haben, will ich Israel retten und die Midianiter in deine Hand geben. Die anderen sollen nach Hause gehen.«

Der Ausgang steht fest

8 Gideon schickte alle zurück, nur die 300 Ausgewählten behielt er bei sich. Diese übernahmen von den anderen den Proviant und die Kriegshörner. Das Lager der Midianiter war unten in der Ebene. 9 In der Nacht sagte der HERR zu Gideon: »Auf, greif das Lager an, ich gebe es in deine Hand! 10 Wenn du aber Angst hast, dann geh vorher mit deinem Diener Pura hinunter 11 und hör dir an, was sie dort miteinander reden. Das wird dir Mut machen, sie anzugreifen.« Gideon und sein Diener gingen hinunter und schlichen sich bis an die äußeren Lagerwachen heran. 12 Die Midianiter, die Amalekiter und die Beduinen aus dem Osten, die dort lagerten, bedeckten die ganze Ebene wie Heuschrecken und ihre Kamele waren unzählbar wie die Sandkörner am Meeresstrand. 13 Als nun Gideon bei den Wachtposten ankam, erzählte gerade einer seinem Kameraden einen Traum. »Stell dir vor«, sagte er, »ich habe im Traum gesehen, wie ein Gerstenbrot vom Berg herab in unser Lager rollte. Es stieß an unser Zelt, warf es um und kehrte das Unterste zuoberst.« 14 Sein Kamerad antwortete: »Das kann nur eine Bedeutung haben: Der Israelit Gideon wird uns besiegen; Gott hat uns und unser Lager in seine Hand gegeben!«

Gott kämpft auf der Seite Gideons

15 Als Gideon den Traum und seine Deutung gehört hatte, warf er sich nieder und dankte Gott. Dann kehrte er ins Lager Israels zurück und rief: »Steht auf! Der HERR hat das Lager der Midianiter in eure Hand gegeben.« 16 Er teilte die 300 Mann in drei Gruppen auf; jeder bekam ein Widderhorn und eine Fackel, dazu einen Krug, um die brennende Fackel zu verbergen. 17 Gideon schärfte ihnen ein: »Stellt euch rings um das Lager auf und macht alles genauso wie ich! Ich gehe jetzt bis zum Rand des Lagers und ihr achtet genau darauf, was ihr mich tun seht, und macht es ebenso. Wenn ihr hört, wie ich und die Männer bei mir ins Horn stoßen, dann stoßt auch ihr ins Horn, rings um das Lager, und ruft: ›Für den HERRN und für Gideon!‹« 19 Mitten in der Nacht kam Gideon mit seinen 100 Mann an den Rand des Lagers. Die Midianiter hatten gerade die Wachen gewechselt. Da bliesen die Männer um Gideon ihre Widderhörner und zerschlugen die Krüge. 20 Alle drei Abteilungen folgten dem Beispiel, stießen in die Hörner und zerschlugen die Krüge. Jeder hielt in der linken Hand die Fackel und in der rechten das Horn. Sie riefen: »Auf zum Kampf! Für den HERRN und für Gideon!« 21 Dabei standen sie rings um das Lager, jeder an seinem Platz. Im Lager liefen alle durcheinander, schrien und ergriffen die Flucht. 22 Denn als die dreihundert in die Widderhörner stießen, ließ der HERR im Lager eine Panik entstehen und alle gingen mit dem Schwert aufeinander los. Darauf floh das ganze Heer in Richtung auf Bet-Schitta, Zereda, Sefat-Abel-Mehola und Tabbat.

Die Rolle Efraïms bei der Verfolgung der Midianiter

23 Nun wurden die Männer der Stämme Naftali, Ascher und Manasse zusammengerufen, um die Midianiter zu verfolgen. 24 Gideon schickte auch Boten ins Bergland von Efraïm und ließ dort sagen: »Kommt herab und verlegt den Midianitern den Fluchtweg! Besetzt alle Wasserstellen bis nach Bet-Bara und sichert die Jordanfurten!« Da sammelten sich alle Männer des Stammes Efraïm, besetzten die Wasserstellen und riegelten die Jordanfurten ab. 25 Sie nahmen zwei Anführer der Midianiter, Oreb und Seeb (d. h. »Rabe« und »Wolf«), gefangen und töteten sie, Oreb am Rabenfelsen und Seeb bei der Wolfskelter. Dann verfolgten sie die Midianiter. Die abgeschlagenen Köpfe der beiden Anführer brachten sie zu Gideon auf die andere Seite des Jordans.
