Samson’s Marriage

1 Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 Then he came up and told his father and mother, “I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife.” 3 But his father and mother said to him, “Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.” 4 His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel. 5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson’s eyes. 8 After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. 9 He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion. 10 His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, for so the young men used to do. 11 As soon as the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said to them, “Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes, 13 but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes.” And they said to him, “Put your riddle, that we may hear it.” 14 And he said to them, “Out of the eater came something to eat. Out of the strong came something sweet.” And in three days they could not solve the riddle. 15 On the fourth* day they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us here to impoverish us?” 16 And Samson’s wife wept over him and said, “You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?” 17 She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted, and on the seventh day he told her, because she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her people. 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle.” 19 And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father’s house. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man.

Simson will eine Philisterin heiraten

1 Als Simson einmal in das Philisterdorf Timna hinabkam, fiel ihm dort ein Mädchen auf. 2 Er ging nach Hause und sagte zu seinem Vater und seiner Mutter: »Ich habe in Timna ein Mädchen gesehen, eine Philisterin. Gebt sie mir zur Frau!« 3 Die beiden erwiderten: »Musst du unbedingt eine Philisterin heiraten, eine aus diesem Volk von Unbeschnittenen? Gibt es in unserem Stamm und in unserem ganzen Volk denn kein Mädchen für dich?« Aber Simson sagte zu seinem Vater: »Gib mir die! Die gefällt mir!« 4 Seine Eltern konnten nicht wissen, dass der HERR seine Hand im Spiel hatte. Er wollte einen Anlass haben, um gegen die Philister vorzugehen, die damals über Israel herrschten. 5 Simson machte sich also mit seinem Vater und seiner Mutter auf den Weg nach Timna. Als sie an die Weinberge von Timna kamen, bog Simson vom Weg ab.* Da stand plötzlich ein brüllender Löwe vor ihm. 6 Der Geist des HERRN nahm Besitz von Simson und er zerriss den Löwen mit bloßen Händen, wie man ein gebratenes Böckchen beim Mahl in Stücke reißt. Seinen Eltern erzählte er nichts davon. 7 Als er nach Timna kam, sprach er mit der Philisterin und sie gefiel ihm gut. 8 Nach einiger Zeit ging er wieder nach Timna, um sie zur Frau zu nehmen. Unterwegs bog er vom Weg ab, um nach dem toten Löwen zu sehen. In dem Kadaver hatte sich ein Bienenvolk eingenistet und es war auch schon Honig da. 9 Er nahm den Honig heraus und aß im Weitergehen davon. Er ging zu seinem Vater und seiner Mutter hin und gab ihnen ebenfalls davon; er sagte ihnen aber nicht, dass er den Honig im Kadaver des Löwen gefunden hatte.

Simsons erster Konflikt mit den Philistern

10 Simsons Vater ging nach Timna, um den Ehevertrag abzuschließen. Simson veranstaltete ein Festgelage, wie es damals bei den jungen Leuten üblich war. 11 Als die Bewohner von Timna ihn kommen sahen, wählten sie dreißig junge Männer aus, die mit ihm feiern sollten. 12 Am ersten Tag des Festes sagte Simson zu ihnen: »Ich will euch ein Rätsel aufgeben. Wenn ihr es innerhalb der sieben Festtage lösen könnt, gebe ich jedem von euch ein leinenes Hemd und ein Festkleid. 13 Könnt ihr es nicht, so muss jeder von euch mir ein Hemd und ein Festkleid geben.« Sie erwiderten: »Gut, lass uns dein Rätsel hören!« Und 14 Simson sagte es ihnen: »Vom Fresser kam Fraß, vom Starken kam Süßes.« Drei Tage lang versuchten sie, das Rätsel zu lösen, und konnten es nicht. 15 Am vierten Tag* sagten sie zu Simsons Frau: »Bring doch deinen Mann dazu, dass er dir die Lösung verrät, und sag sie uns! Sonst werden wir dich mit dem ganzen Haus deines Vaters verbrennen. Ihr habt uns wohl eingeladen, um uns arm zu machen?« 16 Da hängte die Frau sich weinend an Simsons Hals und sagte: »Du liebst mich nicht! Ich bin dir zuwider! Du hast meinen Landsleuten dieses Rätsel aufgegeben und hast mir nicht gesagt, was es bedeutet.« »Ich habe es nicht einmal meinem Vater und meiner Mutter gesagt«, erwiderte Simson. »Warum sollte ich es dann dir sagen?« 17 Während der ganzen Festtage hing sie weinend an ihm. Schließlich am siebten Tag sagte er es ihr, weil sie ihm so zusetzte. Sie verriet die Lösung an die jungen Männer aus ihrem Volk, 18 und die sagten zu Simson, kurz bevor die Sonne am siebten Tag unterging: »Was ist süßer als Honig, was stärker als ein Löwe?« Simson antwortete ihnen: »Hättet ihr nicht mit meiner eigenen Kuh gepflügt, so hättet ihr mein Rätsel nie erraten.« 19 Der Geist des HERRN nahm Besitz von ihm, und er ging hinunter nach Aschkelon und erschlug dreißig Männer. Er zog ihnen aus, was sie anhatten, und gab es den jungen Männern, die sein Rätsel gelöst hatten. Voll Zorn kehrte er darauf ins Haus seines Vaters zurück. 20 Seine Frau aber wurde von ihrem Vater dem Brautführer, einem von den dreißig, gegeben.
