Land Still to Be Conquered

1 Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. 2 This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites 3 (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim, 4 in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, 5 and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath, 6 all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. 7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

8 With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh* the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: 9 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. 14 To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him. 15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages. 24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,* 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages. 29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans. 32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.

1 Josua war inzwischen sehr alt geworden. Der HERR sagte zu ihm: »Du hast nicht mehr lange zu leben, aber es muss noch ein großer Teil des Landes erobert werden, 2 nämlich das ganze Gebiet der Philister im Süden und im Norden das gesamte Gebiet der Geschuriter.* 3 Diese Gebiete reichen von der ägyptischen Grenze nordwärts bis Ekron; dieser ganze Landstrich wird den Kanaanitern zugerechnet und umfasst die fünf Stadtfürstentümer der Philister: Gaza, Aschdod und Aschkelon, Gat und Ekron und dazu das Gebiet der Awiter im Süden.* 4 Weiter gehört dazu das gesamte Gebiet der Kanaaniter von der Stadt Ara,* die zu Phönizien gehört, bis zur Stadt Afek und zum Gebiet der Amoriter, 5 das Gebiet der Stadt Gebal und im Osten der ganze Libanon von Baal-Gad am Fuß des Hermongebirges bis nach Lebo-Hamat. 6 Auch alle Gebirgsbewohner Phöniziens, vom Libanon bis nach Misrefot-Majim, werde ich vor den Israeliten aus dem Land vertreiben. Teile trotzdem schon jetzt das ganze Land durchs Los unter die Israeliten auf, wie ich es dir befohlen habe. 7 Das Land vom Jordan bis zum Mittelmeer* teilst du den neuneinhalb Stämmen als bleibenden Besitz zu.« 8 Der halbe Stamm Manasse* hatte zusammen mit den Stämmen Ruben und Gad seinen Anteil am Land schon östlich des Jordans erhalten; Mose, der Bevollmächtigte des HERRN, hatte ihnen die folgenden Gebiete zugeteilt: 9 die ganze Hochebene zwischen Medeba und Dibon und alle Städte, über die der Amoriterkönig Sihon von Heschbon aus geherrscht hatte, von Aroër auf den Höhen über dem Arnontal und der Stadt, die direkt am Arnonfluss liegt, nach Norden bis zur Grenze der Ammoniter; 11 die Landschaft Gilead, das Gebiet von Geschur und Maacha, das ganze Hermongebirge und die ganze Landschaft Baschan bis nach Salcha, 12 also das gesamte Gebiet, über das König Og von Baschan in Aschtarot und Edreï geherrscht hatte, der Letzte aus dem Geschlecht der Rafaïter, die von Mose besiegt und vertrieben worden waren. 13 Allerdings hatten die Israeliten die Bewohner von Geschur und Maacha nicht vertrieben; deshalb leben sie bis heute mitten in Israel. 14 Nur dem Stamm Levi gab Mose keinen Anteil am Land. Der HERR hatte ihnen die Opfergaben, die ihm gebracht werden, als ihren Anteil zugesprochen.

Das Gebiet des Stammes Ruben

15 Zuerst hatte Mose den Sippen des Stammes Ruben ihr Gebiet zugeteilt. 16 Es erstreckt sich von Aroër auf den Höhen über dem Arnontal und der Stadt direkt am Arnonfluss nach Norden über die ganze Hochebene bis nach Medeba 17 und weiter bis nach Heschbon. In diesem Gebiet liegen die Städte Dibon, Bamot-Baal, Bet-Baal-Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemot, Mefaat, 19 Kirjatajim, Sibma, Zeret-Schahar auf dem Gebirge östlich des Jordans, 20 Bet-Pegor, Aschdot-Pisga, Bet-Jeschimot 21 und die übrigen Städte der Hochebene. Es umfasst das ganze ehemalige Herrschaftsgebiet des Amoriterkönigs Sihon, der in Heschbon regiert hatte und den Mose genauso besiegt hatte wie die midianitischen Stammesoberhäupter Ewi, Rekem, Zur, Hur und Reba, die im Land König Sihons lebten und in seinen Diensten standen. 22 Mit ihnen zusammen hatten die Israeliten auch den Wahrsager Bileam, den Sohn Beors, mit dem Schwert erschlagen. 23 Die Westgrenze des Stammes Ruben ist der Jordan. Alle diese Städte mit ihren Dörfern bilden den Erbbesitz des Stammes Ruben und seiner Sippen.

Das Gebiet des Stammes Gad

24 Den Sippen des Stammes Gad hatte Mose das nördlich anschließende Gebiet zugeteilt. 25 Es umfasst Jaser und alle Städte der Landschaft Gilead sowie das halbe Land der Ammoniter bis nach Aroër bei Rabba, 26 also das restliche Herrschaftsgebiet des Amoriterkönigs Sihon; es erstreckt sich von Heschbon bis nach Ramat-Mizpe und Betonim und weiter von Mahanajim bis zum Gebiet von Lo-Dabar.* Ferner gehört dazu die östliche Jordanebene bis zum Südende des Sees Gennesaret mit den Städten Bet-Haram, Bet-Nimra, Sukkot und Zafon. 28 Alle diese Städte mit ihren Dörfern bilden den Erbbesitz des Stammes Gad mit seinen Sippen.

Das Gebiet des östlichen Halbstammes Manasse

29 Den Sippen des halben Stammes Manasse hatte Mose das Gebiet zugeteilt, das sich von Mahanajim nordwärts erstreckt. Es umfasst die ganze Landschaft Baschan, das ehemalige Herrschaftsgebiet des Königs Og von Baschan, und dazu die sechzig Ortschaften, die Machirs Sohn Jaïr erobert hatte. 31 Der Hälfte der Sippen, die von Manasses Sohn Machir abstammen, wurde die halbe Landschaft Gilead mit den Städten Aschtarot und Edreï zugeteilt, in denen König Og regiert hatte. 32 Alle diese Gebiete hatte Mose im moabitischen Steppengebiet in der Jordanebene östlich von Jericho als Erbbesitz an die zweieinhalb Stämme verteilt. 33 Dem Stamm Levi gab er keinen Anteil am Landbesitz. Der HERR, der Gott Israels, ist selbst ihr Erbbesitz; von ihm bekommen sie ihren Lebensunterhalt, wie er ihnen das zugesagt hat.
