Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards* off. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among the brothers* that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

1 Später zeigte sich Jesus seinen Jüngern noch einmal am See von Tiberias. Das geschah so: 2 Einige von ihnen waren dort am See beisammen – Simon Petrus, Thomas, der auch Zwilling genannt wurde, Natanaël aus Kana in Galiläa, die Söhne von Zebedäus und zwei andere Jünger. 3 Simon Petrus sagte zu den anderen: »Ich gehe fischen!« »Wir kommen mit«, sagten sie. Gemeinsam gingen sie zum See und stiegen ins Boot; aber während der ganzen Nacht fingen sie nichts. 4 Es wurde schon Morgen, da stand Jesus am Ufer. Die Jünger wussten aber nicht, dass es Jesus war. 5 Er redete sie an: »Kinder, habt ihr nicht ein paar Fische?« »Nein, keinen einzigen!«, antworteten sie. 6 Er sagte zu ihnen: »Werft euer Netz an der rechten Bootsseite aus! Dort werdet ihr welche finden.« Sie warfen das Netz aus und fingen so viele Fische, dass sie das Netz nicht ins Boot ziehen konnten. 7 Der Jünger, den Jesus besonders lieb hatte, sagte zu Petrus: »Es ist der Herr!« Als Simon Petrus das hörte, warf er sich das Obergewand über, band es hoch und sprang ins Wasser. Er hatte es nämlich zum Arbeiten abgelegt. 8 Die anderen Jünger ruderten das Boot an Land – es waren noch etwa hundert Meter* – und zogen das Netz mit den Fischen hinter sich her. 9 Als sie an Land gingen, sahen sie ein Holzkohlenfeuer mit Fischen darauf, auch Brot lag dabei. 10 Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Bringt ein paar von den Fischen, die ihr gerade gefangen habt!« 11 Simon Petrus ging zum Boot und zog das Netz an Land. Es war voll von großen Fischen, genau hundertdreiundfünfzig. Aber das Netz riss nicht, obwohl es so viele waren. 12 Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Kommt her und esst!« Keiner von den Jüngern wagte zu fragen: »Wer bist du?« Sie wussten, dass es der Herr war. 13 Jesus trat zu ihnen, nahm das Brot und verteilte es unter sie, ebenso die Fische. 14 Dies war das dritte Mal, dass sich Jesus seinen Jüngern zeigte, seit er vom Tod auferstanden war.

Jesus und Petrus

15 Nachdem sie gegessen hatten, sagte Jesus zu Simon Petrus: »Simon, Sohn von Johannes, liebst du mich mehr, als die hier mich lieben?« Petrus antwortete: »Ja, Herr, du weißt, dass ich dich liebe.« Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Sorge für meine Lämmer!« 16 Ein zweites Mal sagte Jesus zu ihm: »Simon, Sohn von Johannes, liebst du mich?« »Ja, Herr, du weißt, dass ich dich liebe«, antwortete er. Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Leite meine Schafe!« 17 Ein drittes Mal fragte Jesus: »Simon, Sohn von Johannes, liebst du mich?« Petrus wurde traurig, weil er ihn ein drittes Mal fragte: »Liebst du mich?« Er sagte zu ihm: »Herr, du weißt alles, du weißt auch, dass ich dich liebe.« Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Sorge für meine Schafe! 18 Amen, ich versichere dir: Als du jung warst, hast du deinen Gürtel selbst umgebunden und bist gegangen, wohin du wolltest; aber wenn du einmal alt bist, wirst du deine Hände ausstrecken, und ein anderer wird dich binden und dich dorthin bringen, wohin du nicht willst.« 19 Mit diesen Worten deutete Jesus an, mit welchem Tod Petrus einst Gott ehren werde. Dann sagte Jesus zu ihm: »Komm, folge mir!«

Petrus und der andere Jünger

20 Petrus drehte sich um und sah hinter sich den Jünger, den Jesus besonders lieb hatte. Es war derselbe, der während des letzten Mahles neben Jesus gesessen und ihn gefragt hatte: »Herr, wer wird dich verraten?« 21 Als Petrus ihn sah, fragte er Jesus: »Herr, was geschieht denn mit dem?« 22 Jesus antwortete ihm: »Wenn ich will, dass er so lange lebt, bis ich wiederkomme, was geht das dich an? Du sollst mir folgen!« 23 Deswegen verbreitete sich in der Gemeinde* das Gerücht, dass der andere Jünger nicht sterben werde. Aber Jesus hatte nicht gesagt, dass er nicht sterben werde, sondern: »Wenn ich will, dass er so lange lebt, bis ich wiederkomme, was geht dich das an?«

Schlusswort zum gesamten Buch

24 Dieser Jünger ist es, der alles bezeugt, was in diesem Buch steht. Er selbst hat es niedergeschrieben, und wir wissen, dass er die Wahrheit sagt. 25 Es gibt noch vieles andere, was Jesus getan hat. Wenn alles einzeln aufgeschrieben würde – ich denke, die ganze Welt könnte die Bücher nicht fassen, die dann geschrieben werden müssten.
