1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.* 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” 29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

1 Ich habe euch dies gesagt, damit ihr an mir nicht irrewerdet. 2 Sie werden euch aus den Synagogengemeinden ausschließen. Es wird sogar so weit kommen, dass alle, die euch töten, es als einen Opferdienst zur Ehre Gottes verstehen. 3 Das alles werden sie euch antun, weil sie weder mich noch den Vater erkannt haben.

Die Aufgabe des Heiligen Geistes

4 Aber ich habe es euch gesagt. Wenn es eintrifft, werdet ihr an meine Worte denken.« »Ich habe euch dies alles zu Anfang nicht gesagt, weil ich ja bei euch war. 5 Jetzt gehe ich zu dem, der mich gesandt hat. Doch keiner von euch fragt mich, wohin ich gehe. 6 Ihr seid nur traurig, weil ich euch dies alles gesagt habe. 7 Aber glaubt mir, es ist gut für euch, dass ich fortgehe; denn sonst wird der Helfer nicht zu euch kommen. Wenn ich aber fortgehe, dann werde ich ihn zu euch senden und er wird meine Stelle einnehmen. 8 Wenn er kommt, wird er gegen die Welt auftreten. Er wird den Menschen zeigen, was Sünde ist und was Gerechtigkeit und was Gericht. 9 Die Sünde besteht darin, dass sie mich ablehnen.* 10 Die Gerechtigkeit besteht darin, dass Gott mir recht gibt; denn ich gehe zum Vater und ihr werdet mich nicht mehr sehen. 11 Das Gericht aber besteht darin, dass der Herrscher dieser Welt schon verurteilt ist. 12 Ich hätte euch noch vieles zu sagen, doch das würde euch jetzt überfordern. 13 Aber wenn der Helfer kommt, der Geist der Wahrheit, wird er euch anleiten, in der vollen Wahrheit zu leben.* Was er euch sagen wird, hat er nicht von sich selbst, sondern er wird euch nur sagen, was er hört. Er wird euch jeweils vorbereiten auf das, was auf euch zukommt.* 14 Er wird meine Herrlichkeit sichtbar machen; denn was er an euch weitergibt, hat er von mir. 15 Alles, was der Vater hat, gehört auch mir. Darum habe ich gesagt: Was der Geist an euch weitergibt, hat er von mir.«

Abschied und Wiedersehen

16 »Es dauert noch eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich nicht mehr sehen. Dann wird wieder eine kurze Zeit vergehen, und ihr werdet mich wiedersehen.« 17 Unter seinen Jüngern erhob sich die Frage: »Wie sollen wir das verstehen – und das andere Wort: ›Ich gehe zum Vater‹? 18 Was bedeutet ›eine kurze Zeit‹? Wir verstehen nicht, was er sagt.« 19 Jesus wusste schon, dass sie ihn fragen wollten. Darum sagte er zu ihnen: »Ich habe gesagt: ›Es dauert noch eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich nicht mehr sehen. Dann wird wieder eine kurze Zeit vergehen, und ihr werdet mich wiedersehen.‹ Darüber macht ihr euch nun Gedanken? 20 Amen, ich versichere euch: Ihr werdet jammern und weinen, und die Welt wird sich freuen. Ihr werdet traurig sein; doch ich sage euch: Eure Trauer wird sich in Freude verwandeln. 21 Wenn eine Frau ein Kind zur Welt bringt, leidet sie Angst und Schmerzen; aber wenn das Kind geboren ist, denkt sie nicht mehr daran, was sie ausgestanden hat, und ist nur noch glücklich, dass ein Mensch zur Welt gekommen ist. 22 So wird es auch mit euch sein: Jetzt seid ihr voll Angst und Trauer. Aber ich werde euch wiedersehen. Dann wird euer Herz voll Freude sein, und diese Freude kann euch niemand nehmen. 23 Wenn dieser Tag kommt, werdet ihr mich nichts mehr fragen. Amen, ich versichere euch: Der Vater wird euch dann alles geben, worum ihr ihn bittet, weil ihr es in meinem Namen tut und euch auf mich beruft. 24 Bisher habt ihr nichts in meinem Namen erbeten. Bittet, und ihr werdet es bekommen, damit eure Freude vollkommen und ungetrübt ist.«

Der Sieg über die Welt

25 »Ich habe euch dies alles in Andeutungen gesagt, die euch rätselhaft erscheinen müssen. Die Stunde kommt, dass ich nicht mehr in Rätseln zu euch rede, sondern offen und unverhüllt zu euch über den Vater spreche. 26 Dann werdet ihr ihn unter Berufung auf mich bitten. Ich sage aber nicht, dass ich dann den Vater für euch bitten werde; 27 denn der Vater liebt euch. Er liebt euch, weil ihr mich liebt und nicht daran zweifelt,* dass ich von Gott gekommen bin. 28 Ich bin vom Vater in die Welt gekommen. Jetzt verlasse ich die Welt wieder und gehe zum Vater.« 29 Da sagten seine Jünger zu ihm: »Nun sprichst du offen zu uns, nicht mehr in Rätseln. 30 Jetzt haben wir verstanden, dass du alles weißt. Du weißt schon vorher, was man dich fragen möchte. Darum glauben wir, dass du von Gott gekommen bist.« 31 Jesus erwiderte: »Ihr meint, ihr glaubt? Jetzt schon? 32 Die Stunde kommt, ja, sie ist schon da, dass man euch auseinandertreiben wird. Jeder wird nur noch an sich denken, und mich werdet ihr allein lassen. Trotzdem bin ich nicht allein, weil mein Vater bei mir ist. 33 Dies alles habe ich euch gesagt, damit ihr in meinem Frieden geborgen seid. In der Welt wird man euch hart zusetzen, aber verliert nicht den Mut: Ich habe die Welt besiegt!«
