If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?*3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.4And you know the way to where I am going.”*5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.7If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.* From now on you do know him and have seen him.”8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.12“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.13Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14If you ask me* anything in my name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,* to be with you forever,17even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be* in you.18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.19Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.20In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.21Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”22Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”23Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.25“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.28You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.29And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.30I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. Jesus ist der Weg zum Vater
1Dann sagte Jesus zu allen:* »Erschreckt nicht, habt keine Angst! Vertraut auf Gott und vertraut auch auf mich!*2Im Haus meines Vaters gibt es viele Wohnungen, und ich gehe jetzt hin, um dort einen Platz für euch bereit zu machen. Sonst hätte ich euch doch nicht mit der Ankündigung beunruhigt, dass ich weggehe.*3Und wenn ich gegangen bin und euch den Platz bereitet habe, dann werde ich zurückkommen und euch zu mir nehmen, damit auch ihr seid, wo ich bin.4Den Weg zu dem Ort, an den ich gehe, den kennt ihr ja.«5Thomas sagte zu ihm: »Herr, wir wissen nicht einmal, wohin du gehst! Wie sollen wir dann den Weg dorthin kennen?«6Jesus antwortete: »Ich bin der Weg, denn ich bin die Wahrheit und das Leben.* Einen anderen Weg zum Vater gibt es nicht.7Wenn ihr mich kennt, werdet ihr auch meinen Vater kennen. Schon jetzt kennt ihr ihn und habt ihn gesehen.«8Philippus sagte zu ihm: »Herr, zeige uns den Vater! Mehr brauchen wir nicht.«9Jesus antwortete: »Nun bin ich so lange mit euch zusammen gewesen, Philippus, und du kennst mich immer noch nicht? Wer mich gesehen hat, hat den Vater gesehen. Wie kannst du dann sagen: ›Zeige uns den Vater‹?10Glaubst du nicht, dass du in mir dem Vater begegnest? Was ich zu euch gesprochen habe, das stammt nicht von mir. Der Vater, der immer in mir ist, vollbringt durch mich seine Taten.11Glaubt mir: Ich lebe im Vater und der Vater in mir. Wenn ihr mir nicht auf mein Wort hin glaubt, dann glaubt mir wegen dieser Taten.12Amen, ich versichere euch: Wer im Glauben mit mir verbunden bleibt, wird die gleichen Taten vollbringen, die ich tue. Ja, er wird noch größere Taten vollbringen, denn ich gehe zum Vater.13Wenn ihr dann in meinem Namen, unter Berufung auf mich, um irgendetwas bittet, werde ich es tun. So wird durch den Sohn die Herrlichkeit des Vaters offenbar werden.14Ja, wenn ihr mich um etwas bittet und euch dabei auf mich beruft, werde ich eure Bitte erfüllen.«
Jesus verspricht den Heiligen Geist
15»Wenn ihr mich liebt, werdet ihr meine Gebote befolgen.16Und ich werde den Vater bitten, dass er euch an meiner Stelle einen anderen Helfer gibt, der für immer bei euch bleibt,17den Geist der Wahrheit. Die Welt kann ihn nicht bekommen, weil sie ihn nicht sehen kann und nichts von ihm versteht. Aber ihr kennt ihn, denn er wird bei euch bleiben und in euch leben.18Ich lasse euch nicht wie Waisenkinder allein; ich komme wieder zu euch.19Es dauert noch eine kurze Zeit, dann wird die Welt mich nicht mehr sehen. Aber ihr werdet mich dann sehen, und ihr werdet leben, weil ich lebe.20Wenn dieser Tag kommt, werdet ihr erkennen, dass ich in meinem Vater lebe und dass ihr in mir lebt und ich in euch.21Wer meine Gebote annimmt und sie befolgt, der liebt mich wirklich. Und wer mich liebt, den wird mein Vater lieben. Auch ich werde ihn lieben und ihm meine Herrlichkeit offenbaren.«22Judas – nicht der Judas Iskariot – sagte: »Warum willst du deine Herrlichkeit nur uns zeigen und nicht der Welt?«23Jesus antwortete ihm: »Wer mich liebt, wird sich nach meinem Wort richten; dann wird ihn mein Vater lieben, und wir werden zu ihm kommen und bei ihm wohnen.24Wer mich nicht liebt, richtet sich nicht nach meinen Worten – und dabei kommen doch die Worte, die ihr gehört habt, nicht von mir, sondern von meinem Vater, der mich gesandt hat.25Ich habe euch dies gesagt, solange ich noch bei euch bin.26Der Vater wird euch in meinem Namen den Helfer senden, der an meine Stelle tritt, den Heiligen Geist. Der wird euch alles Weitere lehren und euch an alles erinnern, was ich selbst schon gesagt habe.27Zum Abschied gebe ich euch den Frieden, meinen Frieden, nicht den Frieden, den die Welt gibt. Erschreckt nicht, habt keine Angst!28Ihr habt gehört, wie ich zu euch sagte: ›Ich verlasse euch und werde wieder zu euch kommen.‹ Wenn ihr mich wirklich liebtet, würdet ihr euch freuen, dass ich zum Vater gehe; denn er ist größer als ich.29Ich habe euch das alles im Voraus gesagt, damit euer Glaube festbleibt, wenn es dann eintrifft.30Ich werde nicht mehr viel mit euch reden, weil der Herrscher dieser Welt schon auf dem Weg ist. Er hat keine Macht über mich,31aber die Welt soll erkennen, dass ich den Vater liebe. Darum handle ich so, wie es mir mein Vater aufgetragen hat. Und nun steht auf! Wir wollen gehen!«
