David Anointed King of Israel

1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. 2 In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince* over Israel.’” 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.* 6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off”—thinking, “David cannot come in here.” 7 Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. 8 And David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack ‘the lame and the blind,’ who are hated by David’s soul.” Therefore it is said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.” 9 And David lived in the stronghold and called it the city of David. And David built the city all around from the Millo inward. 10 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him. 11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house. 12 And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel. 13 And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 19 And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.* 21 And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away. 22 And the Philistines came up yet again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.

David wird König über Israel

1 Nun kamen die Vertreter aller Stämme Israels zu David nach Hebron und sagten zu ihm: »Du bist doch unser eigen Fleisch und Blut! 2 Schon früher, als Saul noch unser König war, hast du das Heer Israels im Krieg angeführt. Und der HERR hat dir zugesagt: ›Du bist der Mann, der künftig mein Volk Israel führen und schützen soll. Du wirst der Anführer Israels sein!‹« 3 Das sagten alle Ältesten Israels, die zum König nach Hebron gekommen waren. König David schloss dort in Hebron einen Vertrag mit ihnen und sie riefen den HERRN als Zeugen dafür an. Daraufhin salbten sie David zum König über Israel. 4 David war 30 Jahre alt, als er König wurde. Er regierte 40 Jahre lang, 5 siebeneinhalb Jahre in Hebron als König über Juda und 33 Jahre in Jerusalem als König über Israel und Juda.

David erobert Jerusalem und macht es zu seiner Hauptstadt

6 Nachdem David König von Israel geworden war, zog er mit seinen Kriegsleuten vor die Stadt Jerusalem. Die Jebusiter, die dort wohnten, riefen ihm zu: »Diese Festung wirst du nicht einnehmen, selbst Blinde und Lahme könnten sie verteidigen!« So sicher waren sie, dass David nicht in ihre Stadt eindringen würde. 7 Trotzdem eroberte David die Festung Zion und sie wurde die Stadt Davids. 8 Er sagte damals: »Wer die Jebusiter besiegen will, muss durch den Wasserschacht in die Stadt eindringen.* Sie sind mir verhasst, diese Blinden und Lahmen.« – Deshalb sagt man: »Ein Blinder oder Lahmer kommt mir nicht ins Haus!« 9 Darauf machte David die Festung zu seiner Residenz und gab ihr den Namen »Davidsstadt«. Er baute sie ringsherum aus, vom Millo stadteinwärts. 10 So wurde David immer mächtiger, und der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt,* stand ihm bei. 11 Hiram, der König von Tyrus, schickte eine Gesandtschaft zu David. Er lieferte David Zedernholz für den Bau seines Palastes und schickte auch Zimmerleute und Steinmetzen, die den Bau ausführten. 12 Daran erkannte David: Es war der HERR, der ihn zum König über Israel gemacht und sein Königtum gefestigt hatte. Der HERR handelte so, weil er sein Volk Israel liebte.

13 Nachdem David von Hebron nach Jerusalem gezogen war, nahm er sich Nebenfrauen und noch weitere Frauen aus Jerusalem und bekam noch mehr Söhne und Töchter. 14 Die Söhne, die ihm in Jerusalem geboren wurden, waren: Schammua, Schobab, Natan, Salomo, 15 Jibhar, Elischua, Nefeg, Jafia, 16 Elischama, Eljada und Elifelet.

David schlägt die Angriffe der Philister zurück

17 Als die Philister erfuhren, dass David zum König von Israel gesalbt worden war, kamen sie mit ihrem ganzen Heer, um ihn in ihre Gewalt zu bringen. Doch David konnte sich rechtzeitig in seiner Bergfestung in Sicherheit bringen. 18 Die Philister besetzten die Ebene Rafaïm. 19 Da fragte David den HERRN: »Soll ich sie angreifen? Wirst du sie in meine Hand geben?« Der HERR antwortete: »Greif sie an! Ganz gewiss gebe ich sie in deine Hand!« 20 David zog aus und besiegte die Philister bei Baal-Perazim. Er sagte: »Wie Wasser einen Damm durchbricht, hat der HERR die Reihen meiner Feinde durchbrochen.« Deshalb erhielt der Ort den Namen Baal-Perazim (Herr des Durchbruchs). 21 Die fliehenden Philister ließen sogar ihre Götterbilder zurück, und David und seine Männer nahmen sie als Beute mit. 22 Nach einiger Zeit zogen die Philister noch einmal gegen David aus. Wieder besetzten sie die Ebene Rafaïm. 23 Auch diesmal fragte David den HERRN und er antwortete: »Greif sie nicht an, sondern umgehe sie und fall ihnen bei den Bakabäumen in den Rücken. 24 Sobald du ein Geräusch hörst, wie wenn jemand durch die Baumwipfel schreitet, schlägst du los. Denn dann weißt du, dass ich vor dir her in die Schlacht gezogen bin, um das Heer der Philister zu besiegen.« 25 David befolgte die Weisung des HERRN. Er besiegte die Philister und trieb sie von Geba bis nach Geser zurück.
