1Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.2And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.3The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers.4Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.5And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.6Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.7And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.9So they cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to the house of their idols and to the people.10They put his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.11But when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,12all the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.13And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted seven days.

1Im Gilboa-Gebirge kam es zwischen Israel und den Philistern zur Schlacht. Die Männer Israels mussten fliehen; viele wurden von den Feinden niedergemacht.2Die Philister verfolgten Saul und seine Söhne Jonatan, Abinadab und Malkischua. Die drei Söhne fanden dabei den Tod.3Um Saul entbrannte ein heftiger Kampf. Als die Bogenschützen ihn entdeckten und auf ihn anlegten, zitterte er vor Angst.4Er befahl seinem Waffenträger: »Zieh dein Schwert und töte mich! Sonst werden es diese Unbeschnittenen tun und ihren Spott mit mir treiben.« Aber der Waffenträger scheute sich und wollte es nicht tun. Da nahm Saul sein Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.5Als der Waffenträger sah, dass Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und folgte ihm in den Tod.6So starben Saul, seine drei Söhne, sein Waffenträger und alle seine Männer gemeinsam an diesem einen Tag.7Als die israelitischen Bewohner der Jesreel-Ebene und der angrenzenden Jordangegend erfuhren, dass das Heer Israels geschlagen und Saul mit seinen Söhnen gefallen war, verließen sie ihre Wohnorte und flohen. Die Philister rückten nach und nahmen die Städte in Besitz.8Am Tag nach der Schlacht plünderten die Philister die Gefallenen aus. Dabei fanden sie Saul und seine drei Söhne auf dem Gilboa-Gebirge.9Sie schlugen Saul den Kopf ab und zogen ihm seine Rüstung aus. Kopf und Rüstung ließen sie durch Boten in ihrem ganzen Gebiet herumzeigen. So verkündeten sie ihren Götzen und ihrem Volk die Siegesnachricht.10Dann legten sie die Rüstung in den Tempel der Astarte; den Leichnam Sauls hängten sie an der Stadtmauer von Bet-Schean auf.11Als die Bewohner von Jabesch in Gilead erfuhren, was die Philister mit Saul gemacht hatten,12brachen alle kriegstüchtigen Männer auf und gingen im Schutz der Nacht nach Bet-Schean. Sie nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und auch die Leichen seiner Söhne von der Mauer, brachten sie nach Jabesch und verbrannten sie dort.13Die Gebeine begruben sie unter der Tamariske vor ihrer Stadt und fasteten zur Trauer eine ganze Woche lang.
