The Obedience of the Rechabites

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: 2 “Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak with them and bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers; then offer them wine to drink.” 3 So I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites. 4 I brought them to the house of the Lord into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which was near the chamber of the officials, above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, keeper of the threshold. 5 Then I set before the Rechabites pitchers full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.” 6 But they answered, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever. 7 You shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ 8 We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9 and not to build houses to dwell in. We have no vineyard or field or seed, 10 but we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans and the army of the Syrians.’ So we are living in Jerusalem.” 12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? declares the Lord. 14 The command that Jonadab the son of Rechab gave to his sons, to drink no wine, has been kept, and they drink none to this day, for they have obeyed their father’s command. I have spoken to you persistently, but you have not listened to me. 15 I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them persistently, saying, ‘Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to you and your fathers.’ But you did not incline your ear or listen to me. 16 The sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command that their father gave them, but this people has not obeyed me. 17 Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered.” 18 But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man to stand before me.”

1 Palabra de YHVH que recibió Jeremías en días de Joacim ben Josías, rey de Judá, diciendo: 2 Ve a casa de los recabitas y habla con ellos, tráelos a la Casa de YHVH, a uno de los aposentos, y dales a beber vino. 3 Tomé entonces a Jaazanías ben Jeremías, hijo de Habasinías, con sus hermanos y sus hijos y toda la familia de los recabitas, 4 y los llevé a la Casa de YHVH, al aposento de los hijos de Hanán ben Igdalías, varón de Dios, el cual estaba junto al aposento de los príncipes, sobre el aposento de Maasías ben Salum, guarda de la puerta. 5 Y puse delante de los hijos de la familia de los recabitas unos tazones y unas copas llenas de vino, y les dije: ¡Bebed vino! 6 Pero ellos dijeron: No beberemos vino; porque Jonadab ben Recab nuestro padre nos ordenó diciendo: No beberéis vino jamás, ni vosotros ni vuestros hijos. 7 Tampoco edificaréis casas, ni sembraréis sementeras, ni plantaréis viñas, ni las retendréis, sino que moraréis en tiendas todos vuestros días, para que viváis muchos días sobre la faz de la tierra donde vosotros habitáis. 8 Y nosotros hemos obedecido la voz de nuestro padre Jonadab ben Recab en todas las cosas que nos mandó, de no beber vino en todos nuestros días, ni nosotros, ni nuestras mujeres, ni nuestros hijos ni nuestras hijas; 9 y de no edificar casas para nuestra morada, y de no tener viñas, ni heredades, ni sementeras. 10 Moramos pues en tiendas, y hemos obedecido y hecho conforme a todas las cosas que nos mandó Jonadab nuestro padre. 11 Pero cuando Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia subió a la tierra, dijimos: Venid, ocultémonos en Jerusalem del ejército de los caldeos y del ejército de los de Siria. Y nos quedamos en Jerusalem. 12 Entonces vino palabra de YHVH a Jeremías, diciendo: 13 Así dice YHVH Sebaot, Dios de Israel: Ve y di a los varones de Judá, y a los moradores de Jerusalem: ¿No aprenderéis a obedecer mis palabras? dice YHVH. 14 La palabra de Jonadab ben Recab con que ordenó a sus hijos no beber vino ha sido cumplida, y no lo beben hasta hoy por obedecer el mandamiento de su padre. Sin embargo, Yo os he hablado a vosotros madrugando y sin cesar, y no me habéis escuchado. 15 Os he enviado a mis siervos los profetas, madrugando y sin cesar, para deciros: Volveos ahora cada uno de vuestro mal camino, y enmendad vuestras obras, y no vayáis en pos de dioses ajenos para servirles, y habitaréis en la tierra que os di a vosotros y a vuestros padres. Pero no habéis inclinado vuestros oídos, ni me habéis obedecido. 16 Por cuanto los hijos de Jonadab ben Recab tuvieron por firme el mandamiento que les dio su padre, en tanto que este pueblo no me obedece a mí, 17 por tanto, así dice YHVH, ’Elohim Sebaot, Dios de Israel: He aquí Yo traigo sobre Judá y sobre los moradores de Jerusalem todo el mal que he pronunciado contra ellos, por cuanto les hablé y no oyeron, los llamé, y no respondieron. 18 Y dijo Jeremías a la familia de los recabitas: Así dice YHVH Sebaot, Dios de Israel: Por cuanto obedecisteis al mandamiento de Jonadab vuestro padre, y guardasteis todos sus mandamientos, e hicisteis conforme a todas las cosas que os mandó, 19 así dice YHVH Sebaot, Dios de Israel: No le faltará a Jonadab ben Recab un varón que esté ante mi presencia todos los días.
