Warning to the Rich

1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. 4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

Patience in Suffering

7 Be patient, therefore, brothers,* until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

The Prayer of Faith

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.* 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Contra ricos injustos

1 ¡Vamos ahora, ricos! Llorad y aullad por las miserias que están por venir sobre vosotros. 2 Vuestra riqueza se ha podrido, vuestras ropas están comidas por la polilla, 3 vuestro oro y vuestra plata se ha enmohecido, y su moho testificará contra vosotros, y consumirá vuestras carnes como fuego. ¡Habéis atesorado para los días del fin! 4 ¡He aquí clama el jornal retenido por vosotros de los obreros que segaron vuestras tierras, y el clamor de los segadores ha llegado a oídos del Señor de los ejércitos! 5 Habéis vivido en deleites en la tierra y habéis sido disolutos; habéis engordado vuestros corazones como en día del degüello; 6 habéis condenado y dado muerte al justo sin que os hiciera resistencia.

Misericordia y compasión de Dios

7 Vosotros pues, oh hermanos, tened paciencia hasta la venida del Señor. Mirad cómo el labrador espera el precioso fruto de la tierra, siendo paciente con él hasta que reciba la lluvia temprana y la tardía. 8 También vosotros sed pacientes y afianzad vuestros corazones, porque la venida del Señor está cerca. 9 Hermanos, no os quejéis unos contra otros, para que no seáis juzgados. Mirad, el Juez está a las puertas. 10 Hermanos, tomad como modelo del sufrimiento y de la longanimidad a los profetas que hablaron en el nombre del Señor. 11 He aquí llamamos bienaventurados a los que se mantuvieron firmes. Oísteis de la paciencia de Job, y visteis el propósito que tenía el Señor, porque el Señor es muy compasivo y misericordioso.

Acerca del juramento

12 Pero ante todo, hermanos míos, no juréis, ni por el cielo ni por la tierra, ni con ningún otro juramento; sino que vuestro sí sea sí y vuestro no sea no, para que no caigáis bajo acusación. 13 ¿Está afligido alguno entre vosotros? Ore. ¿Está alguno alegre? Cante alabanzas. 14 ¿Está alguno enfermo entre vosotros? Haga llamar a los ancianos de la iglesia, y oren por él, ungiéndolo con aceite en el nombre del Señor. 15 Y la oración de fe sanará al enfermo, y el Señor lo levantará; y si hubiera cometido pecados, le serán perdonados. 16 Confesaos pues los pecados unos a otros, y orad unos por otros para que seáis sanados. La petición eficaz del justo puede mucho. 17 Elías era un hombre sujeto a pasiones, igual que nosotros, y oró fervientemente para que no lloviera, y no llovió sobre la tierra por tres años y seis meses. 18 Y otra vez oró, y el cielo dio lluvia y la tierra produjo su fruto. 19 Hermanos míos, si alguno entre vosotros se extravía de la verdad, y alguno lo hace volver, 20 sepa que el que haga volver a un pecador del extravío de su camino, salvará su alma de la muerte y cubrirá multitud de pecados.
