1Estaba entonces enfermo cierto hombre, llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de Miriam y de Marta su hermana.2(Y Miriam, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, era aquella que había ungido al Señor con perfume, y enjugado los pies con sus cabellos.)3Las hermanas enviaron pues a decirle: Señor, he aquí el que amas está enfermo.4Al oírlo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.5Y Jesús amaba a Marta y a su hermana, y a Lázaro.6Pero cuando oyó: Está enfermo, entonces permaneció dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.7Luego, después de esto, dice a los discípulos: Vamos otra vez a Judea.8Le dicen los discípulos: Rabbí, hace poco los judíos procuraban apedrearte, ¿y otra vez irás allá?9Jesús respondió: ¿No hay doce horas en el día? Si uno anda de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.10Pero si uno anda de noche, tropieza, porque la luz no está en él.11Dichas estas cosas, después les dice: Nuestro amigo Lázaro se ha quedado dormido, pero voy a despertarlo.12Entonces los discípulos le dijeron: Señor, si se ha dormido será sanado.13(Pero Jesús hablaba acerca de su muerte, mientras ellos pensaban: Se refiere al reposo del sueño.)14Así que Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro ha muerto.15Y me alegro por vosotros de no haber estado allí, para que creáis. Pero vayamos a él.16Entonces Tomás, el llamado Dídimo, dijo a sus condiscípulos: Vayamos también nosotros para que muramos con Él.
La resurrección y la vida
17Cuando llegó Jesús, halló que llevaba ya cuatro días en el sepulcro.18Y Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalem, como a quince estadios;19y muchos de los judíos habían acudido a Marta y Miriam para consolarlas respecto al hermano.20Así que cuando Marta oyó: Jesús viene, salió a su encuentro; pero Miriam permanecía sentada en la casa.21Entonces Marta dijo a Jesús: ¡Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano!22Pero yo sé que aun ahora, todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará.23Jesús le dice: Tu hermano se levantará.24Marta le dice: Sé que se levantará en la resurrección, en el día postrero.25Jesús le dijo: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá;26y todo el que vive y cree en mí, de ningún modo morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?27Le dice: Sí, Señor, yo he creído que Tú eres el Ungido, el Hijo de Dios, el que viene al mundo.
Sus lágrimas
28Dicho esto, fue y llamó a su hermana Miriam, diciéndole en secreto: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.29Cuando ella lo oyó, se levantó de prisa y fue a Él;30pues Jesús todavía no había llegado a la aldea, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo había encontrado.31Entonces los judíos que estaban en la casa con ella y la consolaban, viendo que Miriam se levantó de prisa y salió, la siguieron, pensando que iba al sepulcro a llorar allí.32Cuando Miriam llegó adonde estaba Jesús, al verlo cayó a sus pies, y le dijo: ¡Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano!33Jesús entonces, cuando la vio llorando, y a los judíos que habían llegado con ella, se conmovió profundamente en su espíritu, y se turbó,34y dijo: ¿Dónde lo habéis puesto? Le dicen: Señor, ven y ve.35Jesús lloró.36Decían entonces los judíos: ¡Mirad cuánto lo amaba!37Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que restauró los ojos del ciego, hacer también que éste no muriera?
Resurrección de Lázaro
38Jesús pues, profundamente conmovido otra vez en sí mismo, va al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y una piedra estaba recostada contra ella.39Jesús dice: Quitad la piedra. Le dice Marta, la hermana del que había muerto: Señor, hiede ya, porque es de cuatro días.40Jesús le dice: ¿No te dije que si crees verás la gloria de Dios?41Quitaron pues la piedra. Entonces Jesús alzó los ojos a lo alto, y dijo: ¡Padre, te doy gracias porque me has oído!42Yo sabía que siempre me oyes, pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que Tú me enviaste.43Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz: ¡Lázaro, ven fuera!44Y el que había muerto salió, atados los pies y las manos con vendas. Y su rostro había sido envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dice: ¡Desatadlo y dejadlo ir!45Entonces, muchos de los judíos que habían venido a casa de Miriam y vieron lo que hizo, creyeron en Él.
El complot
46Pero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que había hecho Jesús.47Entonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron al Sanedrín y decían: ¿Qué haremos? porque este hombre hace muchas señales.48Si lo dejamos así, todos creerán en Él; y vendrán los romanos y nos quitarán tanto el Lugar como la nación.49Entonces Caifás, uno de ellos, que era sumo sacerdote de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada,50ni consideráis que os conviene que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca.51Pero esto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que, siendo sumo sacerdote de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús iba a morir por la nación;52y no sólo por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersados.53Desde aquel día pues, tomaron acuerdo para que lo mataran.54Por lo que Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos, sino que de allí se fue a la región cercana al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y allí permaneció con los discípulos.55Estaba cerca la pascua de los judíos, y muchos subieron de la región a Jerusalem antes de la pascua para purificarse.56Y buscaban a Jesús, y unos a otros decían estando en el templo: ¿Qué os parece? ¿que no vendrá a la fiesta?57Y los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado órdenes para que si alguno supiera dónde estaba, lo informara para prenderlo.

1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.2(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.7Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.8His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day?
