El Logos

1 En un principio era el Logos, y el Logos estaba ante Dios, y Dios era el Logos. 2 En un principio Éste estaba ante Dios. 3 Todas las cosas por Él fueron hechas, y sin Él, nada de lo que ha sido hecho fue hecho. 4 En Él había vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres. 5 La luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no prevalecieron contra ella. 6 (Hubo un hombre enviado de Dios, de nombre Juan; 7 éste vino como testigo para que diera testimonio de la luz, a fin de que todos creyeran por él; 8 no era él la luz, sino para que diera testimonio de la luz.) 9 La luz verdadera, que alumbra a todo hombre al venir al mundo, 10 estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue hecho por Él, pero el mundo no lo conoció. 11 A lo suyo vino, y los suyos no lo recibieron, 12 pero a todos los que lo recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio potestad de ser hechos hijos de Dios, 13 los cuales no nacieron de sangres, ni de voluntad de carne, ni de voluntad de varón, sino de Dios. 14 Y el Logos se hizo carne, y tabernaculizó entre nosotros, y contemplamos su gloria (gloria como del Unigénito del Padre), lleno de gracia y de verdad. 15 Juan testifica de Él, y ha clamado, diciendo: Éste es Aquél de quien yo decía: El que viene detrás de mí, es antes de mí, porque era primero que yo. 16 Porque de su plenitud tomamos todos; es decir, gracia por gracia, 17 pues la ley fue dada por medio de Moisés; la gracia y la verdad fueron hechas por medio de Jesús el Mesías. 18 Nadie ha visto jamás a Dios; el Unigénito Dios, que está en el seno del Padre, Él lo reveló.

Testimonio del Bautista

19 Este es el testimonio de Juan, cuando los judíos le enviaron desde Jerusalem unos sacerdotes y levitas, para que le preguntaran: ¿Tú quién eres? 20 Y confesó (no negó, sino confesó): Yo no soy el Mesías. 21 Y le preguntaron: ¿Qué, pues? ¿Eres tú Elías? Y dice: No lo soy. ¿Eres tú el Profeta? Y respondió: No. 22 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Quién eres? para que demos respuesta a los que nos enviaron. ¿Qué dices acerca de ti mismo? 23 Dijo: Yo soy la voz de uno que clama en el desierto: Allanad el camino del Señor, como dijo el profeta Isaías. 24 (Y los enviados eran de los fariseos.) 25 Y le preguntaron y le dijeron: ¿Por qué pues bautizas, si tú no eres el Mesías, ni Elías, ni el Profeta? 26 Juan les respondió diciendo: Yo bautizo con agua, pero hay uno que ha tomado sitio entre vosotros, que vosotros no conocéis, 27 el que viene después de mí, de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de su sandalia. 28 Estas cosas sucedieron en Betania, al otro lado del Jordán, donde Juan estaba bautizando.

El Cordero de Dios

29 Al día siguiente, ve a Jesús que viene hacia él, y dice: ¡He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo! 30 Éste es de quien yo dije: Detrás de mí viene un Varón que se me ha adelantado, porque era primero que yo. 31 Y yo no lo conocía, pero para que Él fuera manifestado a Israel, por eso vine yo bautizando en agua. 32 Y Juan dio testimonio, diciendo: He contemplado al Espíritu que descendía del cielo como una paloma, y permaneció sobre Él. 33 Y yo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua, Él me dijo: Sobre el que veas que desciende el Espíritu y permanece sobre Él, ése es el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo. 34 Y yo lo he visto, y he dado testimonio de que éste es el Hijo de Dios.

Primeros discípulos

35 Al día siguiente, de nuevo estaba Juan con dos de sus discípulos, 36 y viendo a Jesús que pasaba, dice: He ahí el Cordero de Dios. 37 Y sus dos discípulos lo oyeron hablar, y siguieron a Jesús. 38 Volviéndose entonces Jesús y viéndolos que lo seguían, les dice: ¿Qué buscáis? Ellos entonces le dijeron: Rabbí (que traducido es, Maestro), ¿dónde moras? 39 Les dice: Venid y veréis. Fueron, pues, y vieron dónde moraba y se quedaron con Él aquel día, porque era como la hora décima. 40 Uno de los que habían oído de Juan y lo habían seguido era Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro; 41 éste, lo primero que hizo fue hallar a su hermano Simón, y le dice: Hemos hallado al Mesías (que traducido es, Ungido). 42 Lo llevó a Jesús. Mirándolo fijamente, Jesús dijo: Tú eres Simón, el hijo de Juan, tú serás llamado Cefas (que significa Pedro).

Felipe y Natanael

43 Al día siguiente quiso salir hacia Galilea, y halla a Felipe; y Jesús le dice: Sígueme. 44 Y Felipe era de Betsaida, de la ciudad de Andrés y de Pedro. 45 Felipe halla a Natanael y le dice: Hemos hallado a aquél de quien escribió Moisés en la ley y los profetas: a Jesús, hijo de José, el de Nazaret. 46 Natanael le dijo: ¿De Nazaret puede salir algo bueno? Felipe le dice: Ven y ve. 47 Jesús ve a Natanael que viene, y dice acerca de él: ¡He aquí un verdadero israelita, en quien no hay engaño! 48 Natanael le dice: ¿De dónde me conoces? Respondió Jesús, y le dijo: Antes que te llamara Felipe, cuando estabas debajo de la higuera, te vi. 49 Le respondió Natanael: ¡Rabbí, Tú eres el Hijo de Dios! ¡Tú eres el Rey de Israel! 50 Respondió Jesús y le dijo: ¿Porque te dije que te vi debajo de la higuera, crees? Cosas mayores que éstas verás. 51 Y le dice: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Veréis el cielo abierto, y a los ángeles de Dios que ascienden y descienden sobre el Hijo del Hombre.

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life,* and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own,* and his own people* did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son* from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.* 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God,* who is at the Father’s side,* he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight* the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son* of God.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.* 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus* was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter*).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you,* you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
