Det judiska rådet vill se Jesus dömd till döden

1 Tidigt nästa morgon samlades översteprästerna och folkets ledare och laglärarna*‑ hela det judiska rådet*‑ för en ny överläggning. Sedan lät de binda Jesus och förde bort honom och överlämnade honom till Pilatus, den romerska landshövdingen.*

Jesus förhörs av Pilatus

2 Pilatus frågade honom: ”Är du judarnas kung?” Men Jesus svarade: ”Det är du själv som kallar mig det.” 3 Sedan anklagade översteprästerna honom för en rad olika brott, och Pilatus frågade honom: ”Varför säger du ingenting? Du hör ju vad de anklagar dig för!” 5 Men till Pilatus stora förvåning svarade Jesus inget mer.

Pilatus dömer Jesus till döden

6 Vid påskhögtiden* brukade Pilatus alltid frige en fånge åt dem, vem som helst som judarna ville ha fri. 7 Och just då satt en man fängslad som hette Barabbas. Han hade tillsammans med några andra dömts för mord under ett politiskt uppror. 8 Folket började nu samlas inför Pilatus för att be honom göra som han brukade. 9 ”Är det judarnas kung ni vill att jag ska släppa fri?” frågade Pilatus. 10 Han visste mycket väl att översteprästerna bara hade överlämnat Jesus åt honom för att de var avundsjuka på Jesus. 11 Men översteprästerna hetsade upp folket och fick dem att kräva att Barabbas skulle friges istället för Jesus. 12 Pilatus frågade då igen: ”Vad ska jag göra med den här mannen som ni kallar judarnas kung?” 13 ”Spika fast honom på ett kors!” ropade de tillbaka. 14 ”Men vad har han gjort för ont?” frågade Pilatus. Då skrek de ännu högre: ”Spika fast honom på ett kors!” 15 Och till slut gav Pilatus efter och släppte Barabbas, eftersom han ville göra det som folket krävde. Men Jesus lät han piska och överlämnade honom sedan till sina soldater för att de skulle föra bort honom ochspika fast honom på ett kors.

De romerska soldaterna hånar Jesus

16 De romerska soldaterna ledde först in Jesus på gården till landshövdingens residens, där hela vaktstyrkan kallades samman. 17 De klädde på honom en mörkröd* mantel och gjorde en krona av törne som de satte på honom. 18 Sedan slog de honom i huvudet med en käpp och spottade på honom och föll på knä och låtsades hylla honom. ”Leve judarnas kung”, ropade de. 20 När de till slut hade tröttnat på att håna honom, tog de av honom den röda manteln och satte på honom hans egna kläder och förde bort honom för att spika fast honom på ett kors.

Jesus spikas fast på ett kors

21 På vägen till avrättningsplatsen stötte soldaterna på Simon från Kyrene*, pappa till Alexandros och Rufus. Han råkade just då vara på väg till Jerusalem från landsbygden, och honom tvingade de att bära Jesus kors. 22 Soldaterna förde Jesus till den plats som kallas Golgota (det betyder Skallen). 23 Och där gav man honom vin blandat med myrra,* men han vägrade att dricka det. 24 Sedan spikade de fast honom på ett kors och delade hans kläder mellan sig genom att kasta lott om dem. 25 Klockan var runt nio på morgonen när de spikade fast honom på korset. 26 Och ovanför honom hade man satt upp en skylt med texten: ”Judarnas kung”, för att visa vad han anklagades för. 27 Samtidigt med Jesus blev också två brottslingar fastspikade på varsitt kors, en på var sida om honom.* 29 Och de som gick förbi avrättningsplatsen hånade Jesus och skakade på huvudet och sa: ”Var det inte du som skulle riva ner templet och bygga upp det igen på tre dagar? 30 Hjälp dig själv nu och kliv ner från korset.” 31 Även översteprästerna och laglärarna* gjorde sig lustiga över honom och skämtade med varandra.”Han var bra på att hjälpa andra”, sa de, ”men han kan inte hjälpa sig själv! 32 Skulle han vara Messias, Israels utlovade kung? Ja, om han kliver ner från korset, då ska vi tro på honom!”Till och med de som hade spikats fast på kors tillsammans med honom hånade honom.

Jesus dör på korset

33 När klockan var tolv blev det plötsligt mörkt i hela landet, och mörkret varade ända fram till klockan tre. 34 Och när klockan var runt tre ropade Jesus med hög röst: ”Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachtani?” (det betyder: ”Min Gud, min Gud, varför har du övergett mig?”)* 35 Några av dem som stod där i närheten missförstod honom och trodde att han ropade på Elia*. 36 En av dem sprang bort och fyllde en svamp med surt vin, och satte den på en käpp och höll upp den så att han kunde dricka. ”Låt oss se om Elia kommer och tar ner honom”, sa han. 37 Men Jesus ropade högt och slutade att andas. 38 Och i samma stund brast förhänget framför det allra heligaste* i templet i två delar, uppifrån och ända ned. 39 När den romerska officeren, som stod bredvid korset, såg på vilket sätt Jesus gav upp andan, ropade han: ”Den mannen var verkligen Guds Son!” 40 Några kvinnor stod också en bit bort från avrättningsplatsen och såg allt som hände. Bland dem var Maria från Magdala, den Maria som var mamma till Jakob den yngre och Joses, och Salome. 41 De hade följt Jesus och hjälpt honom då han var i Galileen. Och nu stod de där tillsammans med många andra kvinnor som följt med Jesus till Jerusalem.

Jesus begravs

42 Allt detta hände på fredagen, förberedelsedagen, alltså dagen före vilodagen*. Och när kvällen* närmade sig 43 var Josef från Arimataia modig nog att gå till Pilatus och be att få ta hand om Jesus kropp. Josef var en respekterad medlem av det judiska rådet*, och en man som ivrigt väntade på att Gud skulle börja regera bland människorna.* 44 Pilatus hade svårt att tro att Jesus redan var död, så han kallade till sig den romerska officeren för att fråga honom. 45 Men när officeren bekräftade att Jesus verkligen var död, fick Josef tillåtelse att ta hand om kroppen. 46 Josef gick genast iväg och köpte linnetyg. Sedan tog han ner Jesus från korset, lindade honom i tyget och la honom i en grav som var uthuggen i berget. Efter det rullade han en stor sten framför ingången till graven. 47 Både Maria från Magdala och Maria, Joses mamma, såg var han la Jesus kropp.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

1 And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged* Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters),* and they called together the whole battalion.* 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour* when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.* 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

33 And when the sixth hour* had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.* 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he* breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son* of God!” 40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.* And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph* bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
