1Senere satte Gud Abrahams tro og lydighed på prøve. Det gik således til: „Abraham!” kaldte Gud. „Ja, Herre,” svarede han. „Jeg lytter!”2„Tag din eneste søn, Isak, som du elsker så højt, og rejs til det sted, der hedder Morija. Der skal du bringe ham som et brændoffer til mig på et bjerg, som jeg vil vise dig.”3Næste morgen stod Abraham meget tidligt op og kaldte på to af sine unge tjenere. Han bad dem om at kløve brænde til det bål, der skulle bruges til brændofferet, og om at gøre et æsel klar til rejsen. Derefter kaldte han på Isak, og de begav sig alle på vej mod det sted, Gud havde sagt ham.4Da de havde rejst i to dage, fik Abraham øje på stedet i det fjerne.5„Vent her med æslet,” sagde Abraham til tjenerne, „mens drengen og jeg går videre for at finde et sted at tilbede Herren. Vi kommer snart tilbage.”6Derefter lagde Abraham offerbrændet på Isaks skuldre, men kniven og de ulmende trækul til offerilden bar han selv. De to gik så videre alene.7„Far,” sagde Isak. „Ja, min dreng.” „Vi har brændet og ilden—men hvor er det lam, der skal ofres?”8„Det vil Gud selv sørge for, min dreng,” svarede Abraham. Så gik de videre i tavshed.9Da de kom til det sted, Abraham havde fået anvist af Gud, byggede han et stenalter og lagde brændet til rette ovenpå. Så bandt han sin søn, Isak, og lagde ham på alteret oven på brændet.10Abraham tog nu kniven og løftede den i vejret for at dræbe sin søn og ofre ham til Herren.11I samme øjeblik lød en røst fra Himlen: „Abraham! Abraham!” „Ja, Herre,” svarede han.12„Læg kniven ned og gør ikke drengen noget! For nu ved jeg, at du virkelig vil adlyde mig—siden du var villig til at ofre din eneste, elskede søn!”13Da Abraham så sig omkring, fik han øje på en vædder, hvis horn havde viklet sig ind i en busk. Han tog vædderen og ofrede den som brændoffer på alteret i stedet for sin søn.14Og Abraham kaldte stedet „Herren sørger for os”. Derfor siger man endnu den dag i dag: „På bjerget vil Herren sørge for os.”15Da råbte Gud igen til Abraham fra Himlen:16„Jeg er Herren, og jeg sværger ved mig selv, at fordi du adlød mig og ikke sparede din eneste søn,17vil jeg velsigne dig. Jeg vil gøre dine efterkommere talrige som himlens stjerner og sandet på stranden, og de vil bryde igennem portene på deres fjenders byer.18Desuden vil alle jordens folkeslag opleve velsignelse gennem en af dine efterkommere,* fordi du adlød mig!”19Derefter vendte Abraham og Isak tilbage til tjenerne, og de tog alle hjem til Be’ersheba. Der blev Abraham boende i nogen tid.
Nakors sønner
20Kort tid efter modtog Abraham følgende besked: „Milka—din bror Nakors kone—har født ham en række sønner. Deres navne er:21Utz, Buz, Kemuel, (som blev far til Aram),22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaf og Betuel,23(som blev far til Rebekka). Disse otte sønner har Milka født Nakor.24Med sin anden kone, Reuma, har han fire sønner: Teba, Gaham, Tahash og Ma’aka.”

1And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am .2And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.3And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.4Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.5And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.7And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?8And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.9And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.10And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.11And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.12And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.15And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,16And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son :17That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;18And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.19So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.20And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;21Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,22And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.23And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham' brother.24And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
