1 А това са народите, които ГОСПОД остави, за да изпита Израил чрез тях, да изпита всички, които не познаваха нито една от ханаанските войни,

2 само за да знаят поколенията на израилевите синове и да се научат на война, само онези, които не я познаваха преди това:

3 петимата първенци на филистимците и всичките ханаанци, и сидонци, и евейци, които живееха в планината Ливан, от планината Ваалермон до прохода на Емат.

4 Те бяха оставени, за да се изпита Израил чрез тях, за да се знае дали ще слушат заповедите на ГОСПОДА, които Той беше заповядал на бащите им чрез Мойсей.

5 И израилевите синове живееха между ханаанците и хетейците, и аморейците, и ферезейците, и евейците, и евусейците;

6 и си вземаха дъщерите им за жени и даваха дъщерите си на синовете им, и служеха на боговете им.

7 И израилевите синове вършиха зло пред ГОСПОДА и забравиха ГОСПОДА, своя Бог, и служеха на ваалимите и на ашерите.

8 И гневът на ГОСПОДА пламна против Израил и Той ги предаде* в ръката на месопотамския цар Хусанрисатаим; и израилевите синове служиха на Хусанрисатаим осем години.

9 И израилевите синове извикаха към ГОСПОДА и ГОСПОД издигна спасител за израилевите синове, който ги спаси – Готониил, синът на Кенез, по-младият брат на Халев.

10 И ГОСПОДНИЯТ Дух беше върху него и той съди Израил. Той излезе на бой и ГОСПОД предаде в ръката му месопотамския цар Хусанрисатаим; и ръката му беше силна над Хусанрисатаим.

11 После земята имаше спокойствие четиридесет години*. И Готониил, синът на Кенез, умря.

12 И израилевите синове отново вършиха зло пред ГОСПОДА. И ГОСПОД укрепи моавския цар Еглон против Израил, защото вършиха зло пред ГОСПОДА.

13 И той събра при себе си синовете на Амон и Амалик и отиде, и разби Израил; и те завладяха града на палмите.

14 И израилевите синове служиха на моавския цар Еглон осемнадесет години.

15 И израилевите синове извикаха към ГОСПОДА и ГОСПОД издигна избавител – Аод, синът на вениаминеца Гира, мъж левак. Чрез неговата ръка израилевите синове изпратиха подарък на моавския цар Еглон.

16 И Аод си направи меч, остър и от двете страни, и дълъг един лакът, и го опаса на дясното си бедро под горната си дреха.

17 И той представи подаръка на моавския цар Еглон. А Еглон беше много дебел човек.

18 И когато свърши да представя подаръка, изпрати хората, които носеха подаръка.

19 А той самият се върна обратно от каменните идоли, които бяха при Галгал, и каза: Имам тайно послание за теб, царю. И той каза: Мълчи! И всички, които стояха при него излязоха от него.

20 Тогава Аод влезе при него, докато той седеше сам в хладната си горна стая. И Аод каза: Имам послание от Бога за теб. И той стана от стола си.

21 Тогава Аод протегна лявата си ръка, взе меча от дясното си бедро и го заби в корема му.

22 Дори и дръжката влезе след острието и тлъстината се затвори над острието, понеже той не извади меча от корема му и той излезе отзад.

23 И Аод излезе през преддверието и затвори след себе си вратите на горната стая и ги залости.

24 Когато той беше излязъл, дойдоха слугите на Еглон и погледнаха, и ето, вратите на горната стая бяха заключени. И те казаха: Сигурно е по нуждата сибукв.: покрива краката си в хладната стая.

25 И те чакаха, докато им стана неудобно, но ето, той не отваряше вратите на горната стая. Затова взеха ключа и отвориха, и ето, господарят им лежеше мъртъв на земята.

26 А докато те се бавеха, Аод избяга; и отмина каменните идоли и избяга в Сеирот.

27 И когато пристигна, наду тръбата в хълмистата земя на Ефрем; и израилевите синове слязоха с него от хълмистата земя и той ги предвождаше.

28 И той им каза: Следвайте ме, защото ГОСПОД предаде враговете ви, моавците, в ръката ви! И те слязоха след него и превзеха бродовете на Йордан срещу Моав, и не оставиха никой да премине.

29 И по онова време избиха около десет хиляди мъже от моавците, всички едри и храбри мъже; нито един не избяга.

30 Така в онзи ден Моав беше покорен под ръката на Израил. И земята имаше спокойствие осемдесет годинист. 11;.

31 А след него дойде Самегар, синът на Анат, който изби с един волски остен шестстотин мъже от филистимците. И той също избави Израил.

English Standard Version

1 Now these are the nations that the Lord left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan.

2 It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before.

3 These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.

4 They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

6 And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.

Othniel

7 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

9 But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

10 The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.

11 So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Ehud

12 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

13 He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of the city of palms.

14 And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15 Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

16 And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit* in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes.

17 And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

18 And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.

19 But he himself turned back at the idols near Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he commanded, “Silence.” And all his attendants went out from his presence.

20 And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat.

21 And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly.

22 And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out.

23 Then Ehud went out into the porch* and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them.

24 When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, “Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.”

25 And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor.

26 Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond the idols and escaped to Seirah.

27 When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader.

28 And he said to them, “Follow after me, for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over.

29 And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped.

30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years.

Shamgar

31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel.
