1 В петнадесетата година на царуването на император Тиберий, когато Понтий Пилат беше управител на Юдея, а Ирод – четверовластник на Галилея, и брат му Филип – четверовластник на Итурейската и Трахонитската страна, и Лисаний – четверовластник на Авилиния,

2 при първосвещенството на Анна и Каяфа, Божието слово беше към Йоан, сина на Захария, в пустинята.

3 И той ходеше по цялата страна около Йордан и проповядваше кръщение на покаяние за прощаване на греховете,

4 както е писано в книгата с думите на пророк Исая: „Глас на един, който вика в пустинята: Пригответе пътя за Господа. Прави правете Неговите пътеки.

5 Всяка долина ще се напълни и всяка планина и хълм ще се сниши; кривите пътеки ще станат прави и неравните места – гладки пътища;

6 и всяко създание ще види Божието спасение.“

7 И казваше на множествата, които излизаха да се кръщават от него: Рожби на усойница! Кой ви предупреди да бягате от идещия гняв?

8 Затова, принасяйте плодове, достойни за покаяние, и не започвайте да си казвате: Имаме Авраам за баща. Защото ви казвам, че Бог може и от тези камъни да въздигне деца на Авраам.

9 А и брадвата лежи вече при корена на дърветата; и така, всяко дърво, което не дава добър плод, се отсича и се хвърля в огън.

10 И множествата го питаха, като казваха: Тогава какво да правим?

11 А той в отговор им каза: Който има две ризи, нека даде на този, който няма; и който има храна, нека прави същото.

12 Дойдоха да се кръстят и бирници и му казаха: Учителю, ние какво да правим?*

13 А той им каза: Не изисквайте нищо повече от това, което ви е определено.

14 Питаха го и военнослужещи, като казаха: А ние какво да правим? Каза им: Не насилвайте никого и не наклеветявайте; и се задоволявайте със заплатите си.

15 И понеже народът беше в очакване и всички размишляваха в сърцата си за Йоан, да не би той да е Христос,

16 Йоан отговори на всички, като каза: Аз ви кръщавам с вода, но идва Онзи, който е по-силен от мен, на когото не съм достоен да развържа ремъка на сандалите Му. Той ще ви кръсти със Светия Дух и огън.

17 Той държи лопатата в ръката Си, за да очисти добре хармана Си и да събере житото в житницата Си; а плявата ще изгори в неугасимия огън.

18 И с много други увещания той благовестяваше на народа.

19 А четверовластникът Ирод, който беше изобличаван от него заради Иродиада, жената на брат си, и заради всичките други злини, които Ирод беше сторил,

20 прибави над всичко и това, че затвори Йоан в тъмницата.

21 И когато се кръсти целият народ и когато и Иисус се кръсти и се молеше, небето се отвори

36 на Каинан, на Арфаксад, на Сим, на Ной, на Ламех,

37 на Матусал, на Енох, на Яред, на Малелеил, на Каинан,

38 на Енос, на Сит, на Адам, на Бога.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,* make his paths straight.

5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways,

6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?”

11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics* is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.”

14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”

15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ,

16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people.

19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,

20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened,

22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;* with you I am well pleased.”*
