Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound* of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii* and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it* for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus* was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

The Unbelief of the People

36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

هديهٔ پرارزش مريم

1 شش روز پيش از آغاز عيد پِسَح، عيسی وارد«بيتعنيا» شد، همان جايی كه ايلعازر مرده را زنده كرده بود. 2 يك شب در آن دهكده به افتخار عيسی ضيافتی ترتيب دادند. مارتا پذيرايی میكرد و ايلعازر با عيسی سر سفره نشسته بود. 3 آنگاه مريم يک شيشه عطر سنبل خالص گرانبها گرفت و آن را روی پايهای عيسی ريخت و با موهای سر خود آنها را خشک كرد. خانه از بوی عطر پر شد. 4 ولی«يهودا اسخريوطی» كه يكی از شاگردان عيسی بود و بعد به او خيانت كرد، گفت: 5 «اين عطر گرانبها بود. بهتر بود آن را میفروختيم و پولش را به فقرا میداديم.» 6 البته او در فكر فقرا نبود بلكه در فكر خودش بود، چون مسئول دخل و خرج و نگهداری پول شاگردان بود و اغلب از اين پول میدزديد. 7 عيسی جواب داد: «كاری با او نداشته باشيد، مريم بدن مرا برای دفن آماده كرد. 8 به فقرا هميشه میتوانيد كمک كنيد ولی من هميشه با شما نيستم.» 9 وقتی مردم اورشليم شنيدند كه عيسی آمده، دستهدسته به ديدن او شتافتند. آنان در ضمن بسيار مايل بودند ايلعازر را نيز كه عيسی او را زنده كرده بود، ببينند. 10 پس كاهنان اعظم تصميم گرفتند ايلعازر را هم بكشند، 11 زيرا به خاطر او بعضی از سران قوم يهود نيز ايمان آورده بودند كه عيسی همان مسيح است.

عيسی وارد اورشليم میشود

12 روز بعد، در تمام شهر خبر پيچيد كه عيسی به اورشليم میآيد. پس، جمعيت انبوهی كه برای مراسم عيد آمده بودند، 13 با شاخههای نخل به پيشواز او رفتند، در حالی كه فرياد میزدند: «مَقدَمت مبارک، ای نجات دهنده! زنده باد پادشاه اسرائيل! درود بر تو ای فرستادهء خدا!» 14 عيسی نيز كرّه الاغی يافت و بر آن سوار شد، همانگونه كه در پيشگويی كتاب آسمانی آمده است كه: 15 «ای قوم اسرائيل از پادشاهت نترس، چون او با فروتنی سوار بر كرّهٔ الاغ میآيد!» 16 شاگردان او در آن زمان متوجهٔ اين پيشگويی نشدند، ولی بعد از اين كه عيسی به جلال خود در آسمان بازگشت، پی بردند كه تمام پيشگويیهای كتاب آسمانی، در مقابل چشمانشان، يكی پس از ديگری واقع شده است. 17 در بين جمعيت، كسانی كه زنده شدن ايلعازر را به چشم خود ديده بودند، آن را برای ديگران تعريف میكردند. 18 در واقع به خاطر همين معجزهٔ بزرگ بود كه مردم با چنان شور و حرارت به پيشواز او رفتند. 19 فريسیها به يكديگر گفتند: «ديگر از ما كاری ساخته نيست. ببينيد، تمام دنيا به دنبال او رفتهاند!»

عيسی مرگ خود را پيشگويی میکند

20 يک عده يونانی كه برای مراسم عيد به اورشليم آمده بودند، 21 پيش فيليپ كه اهل بيتصيدای جليل بود، رفتند و گفتند: «ما میخواهيم عيسی را ببينيم.» 22 فيليپ اين را با اندرياس در میان گذاشت و هر دو رفتند و به عيسی گفتند. 23 عيسی جواب داد: «وقت آن رسيده است كه من به جلالی كه در آسمان داشتم بازگردم. 24 اين كه میگويم عين حقيقت است: همانطور كه دانهٔ گندم در شيار زمين میافتد و میميرد و بعد ثمر میدهد، من نيز بايد بميرم، اگر نه، همچون يک دانه تنها خواهم ماند. ولی مرگ من دانههای گندم تازهٔ بسيار توليد میكند، كه همانا محصول فراوان از جانهای رستگار شدهٔ مردم میباشد. 25 اگر در اين دنيا به زندگی خود دل ببنديد، آن را بر باد خواهيد داد؛ ولی اگر از جان و زندگی خود بگذريد، به جلال و زندگی جاويد خواهيد رسيد. 26 «به اين يونانيان بگوييد كه اگر میخواهند شاگرد من شوند، بايد از من سرمشق بگيرند. چون خدمتگزاران من بايد هر جا میروم با من بيايند. اگر عيناً از من سرمشق بگيرند، پدرم خدا ايشان را سرافراز میگرداند. 27 اكنون جانم همچون دريايی آشفته است. آيا بايد دعا كنم كه: ای پدر، از آنچه میخواهد بر من واقع شود، مرا نجات ده؟ ولی من برای همين امر به اين جهان آمدهام! 28 پس میگويم: ای پدر، نام خود را جلال و سرافرازی ده.» ناگاه صدايی از آسمان گفت: «جلال دادم و باز جلال خواهم داد.» 29 وقتی مردم اين صدا را شنيدند، بعضی گمان بردند كه صدای رعد بود و بعضی ديگر گفتند: «فرشتهای با او سخن گفت.» 30 ولی عيسی فرمود: «اين صدا برای شما بود، نه برای من. 31 چون وقت آن رسيده است كه خدا مردم دنيا را داوری كند و فرمانروای اين دنيا، يعنی شيطان را از قدرت بيندازد. 32 وقتی مسيح را از زمين بلند كرديد، او نيز همه را به سوی خود بالا خواهد كشيد.» 33 عيسی با اين گفته، به نوع مرگ خود بر صليب اشاره كرد. 34 مردم پرسيدند: «تو از مرگ سخن میگويی؟ تا جايی كه ما میدانيم مسيح بايد هميشه زنده بماند و هرگز نميرد. پس چرا تو میگويی كه مسيح بايد بميرد؟ اصلاً دربارهٔ كه صحبت میكنی؟» 35 عيسی جواب داد: «نور من فقط تا مدتی كوتاه بر شما خواهد تابيد؛ پس از فرصت استفاده كنيد و پيش از تاريک شدن، هر جا میخواهيد برويد، چون در تاريكی نمیتوانيد راه را تشخيص دهيد. 36 تا دير نشده، به نور ايمان آوريد تا نورانی شويد.» آنگاه عيسی رفت و خود را از چشم مردم پنهان كرد.

بیايمانی مردم

37 با وجود تمام معجزاتی كه عيسی كرد، بسياری از مردم ايمان نياوردند كه او همان مسيح است. 38 و اين عين همان است كه«اشعيای نبی» پيشگويی كرده بود كه: «ای خداوند، چه كسی سخن ما را باور میكند؟ چه كسی معجزات بزرگ خدا را به عنوان دليل و برهان قبول میكند؟» 39 البته ايشان نتوانستند ايمان بياورند، چون همانطور كه اشعيا گفته بود: 40 «خدا چشمانشان را كور و دلهايشان را سخت كرده است، تا نبينند و نفهمند و به سوی خدا باز نگردند تا شفا يابند.» 41 اشعيا با اين پيشگويی، به عيسی اشاره میكرد، چون پيش از آن در رؤيا جلال مسيح را ديده بود. 42 با اين همه، بعضی از سران قوم يهود ايمان آوردند كه او براستی همان مسيح است، ولی به كسی نگفتند چون میترسيدند ايشان را از عبادتگاه بيرون كنند. 43 در واقع چيزی كه برای اين اشخاص اهميت داشت، جلب نظر و احترام مردم بود نه جلب رضای خدا. 44 پس عيسی با صدای بلند به مردم فرمود: «اگر به من ايمان آوريد، در واقع به خدا ايمان آوردهايد. 45 چون آن كه مرا ديد، گويی فرستندهء مرا ديده است. 46 من مثل نوری آمدهام تا در اين دنيای تاريک بدرخشم تا تمام كسانی كه به من ايمان میآورند، در تاريكی سرگردان نشوند. 47 اگر كسی صدای مرا بشنود ولی اطاعت نكند، من از او بازخواست نخواهم كرد، زيرا من نه برای بازخواست بلكه برای نجات جهان آمدهام. 48 ولی تمام كسانی كه مرا و سخنان مرا نمیپذيرند، در روز قيامت بهوسیلهٔ كلام من از ايشان بازخواست خواهد شد. 49 اين سخنان از من نيست، بلكه من آنچه را كه پدرم خدا گفته است، به شما میگويم؛ 50 و میدانم كه احكام او انسان را به زندگی جاويد میرساند. پس هر چه خدا به من میفرمايد، من همان را میگويم.»
