König Ahas von Juda. Sein Götzendienst und die Niederlage Judas gegen Israel

1 Ahas war 20 Jahre alt, als er König wurde, und er regierte 16 Jahre lang in Jerusalem; aber er tat nicht, was recht war in den Augen des HERRN, wie sein Vater David, 2 sondern er wandelte in den Wegen der Könige von Israel, und er machte sogar gegossene Bilder für die Baale. 3 Und er räucherte im Tal des Sohnes Hinnoms und ließ seine Söhne durchs Feuer gehen, nach den Gräueln der Heidenvölker, die der HERR vor den Kindern Israels vertrieben hatte. 4 Und er opferte und räucherte auf den Höhen und auf den Hügeln und unter allen grünen Bäumen. 5 Darum gab ihn der HERR, sein Gott, in die Hand des Königs der Aramäer, die ihn schlugen und von den Seinen eine große Menge gefangen wegführten und nach Damaskus brachten. Auch wurde er in die Hand des Königs von Israel gegeben, der brachte ihm eine große Niederlage bei. 6 Denn Pekach, der Sohn Remaljas, machte in Juda an einem Tag 120 000 [Mann] nieder, lauter tapfere Leute, weil sie den HERRN, den Gott ihrer Väter, verlassen hatten. 7 Zudem erschlug Sichri, ein ephraimitischer Held, Maaseja, den Sohn des Königs, und Asrikam, den Vorsteher des Königshauses, und Elkana, den Zweiten nach dem König. 8 Und die Kinder Israels führten von ihren Brüdern 200 000 Frauen, Söhne und Töchter gefangen hinweg und machten dazu große Beute unter ihnen und brachten die Beute nach Samaria.

Ein Prophet mahnt Israel zur Barmherzigkeit mit den besiegten Judäern

9 Es war aber dort ein Prophet des HERRN namens Oded; der ging hinaus, dem Heer entgegen, das nach Samaria kam, und sprach zu ihnen: Siehe, weil der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, über Juda zornig ist, hat er sie in eure Hand gegeben; und ihr habt sie niedergemetzelt mit einer Wut, die zum Himmel schreit! 10 Und nun gedenkt ihr, die Kinder Judas und Jerusalems so niederzutreten, dass sie eure Knechte und Mägde werden sollen? Was habt ihr denn anderes als Schulden bei dem HERRN, eurem Gott? 11 So hört nun auf mich und schickt die Gefangenen wieder zurück, die ihr von euren Brüdern weggeführt habt; denn der brennende Zorn des HERRN lastet auf euch! 12 Da standen einige Männer von den Häuptern der Kinder Ephraims auf, nämlich Asarja, der Sohn Johanans, Berechja, der Sohn Meschillemots, Hiskia, der Sohn Schallums, und Amasa, der Sohn Hadlais, gegen diejenigen, welche vom Feldzug zurückkehrten, 13 und sie sprachen zu ihnen: Ihr sollt die Gefangenen nicht hierher bringen, denn ihr würdet Schuld auf uns bringen vor dem HERRN! Ihr gedenkt, unsere Sünde und Schuld zu vermehren; und doch ist unsere Schuld schon groß genug und der brennende Zorn über Israel! 14 Da ließen die Krieger die Gefangenen und die Beute vor den Obersten und der ganzen Gemeinde frei. 15 Die Männer aber, die mit Namen genannt sind, machten sich auf und nahmen sich der Gefangenen an und bekleideten alle, die unter ihnen ohne Kleidung waren, mit Kleidern von der Beute, zogen ihnen Schuhe an und gaben ihnen zu essen und zu trinken und salbten sie und führten alle, die zu schwach waren, auf Eseln und brachten sie nach Jericho, zur Palmenstadt, in die Nähe ihrer Brüder, und kehrten dann wieder nach Samaria zurück.

Ahas sucht Hilfe bei den Assyrern. Seine Gottlosigkeit und sein Ende

16 Zu jener Zeit sandte der König Ahas Botschaft zu den Königen von Assyrien, dass sie ihm helfen sollten. 17 Auch die Edomiter waren wieder gekommen und hatten Juda geschlagen und führten Gefangene hinweg. 18 Dazu fielen die Philister in die Städte der Schephela und in den Süden von Juda ein und eroberten Beth-Schemesch, Ajalon, Gederot und Socho mit seinen Tochterstädten, Timna mit seinen Tochterstädten und Gimso mit seinen Tochterstädten und wohnten darin. 19 Denn der HERR demütigte Juda um Ahas’ willen, des Königs von Israel, weil er in Juda Zügellosigkeit getrieben und sich schwer an dem HERRN versündigt hatte. 20 Da rückte Tiglat-Pilneser, der König von Assyrien, gegen ihn heran, und er bedrängte ihn, anstatt ihn zu stärken. 21 Denn Ahas beraubte das Haus des HERRN und das Haus des Königs und die Fürsten und gab [alles] dem König von Assyrien; aber es half ihm nichts. 22 Ja, zu der Zeit, als er bedrängt wurde, versündigte er sich noch mehr gegen den HERRN, der König Ahas! 23 Er opferte nämlich den Göttern von Damaskus, die ihn geschlagen hatten, indem er sprach: »Weil die Götter der Könige von Aram ihnen helfen, so will ich ihnen opfern, damit sie mir auch helfen!« Aber sie dienten nur dazu, ihn und ganz Israel zu Fall zu bringen. 24 Und Ahas nahm die Geräte des Hauses Gottes weg, und er zerbrach die Geräte des Hauses Gottes, und er verschloss die Türen am Haus des HERRN und machte sich Altäre an allen Ecken von Jerusalem. 25 Und in jeder einzelnen Stadt Judas machte er Höhen, um anderen Göttern zu räuchern, und er reizte den HERRN, den Gott seiner Väter, zum Zorn. 26 Was aber mehr von ihm zu sagen ist und alle seine Wege, die früheren und die späteren, siehe, das ist aufgezeichnet im Buch der Könige von Juda und Israel. 27 Und Ahas legte sich zu seinen Vätern, und man begrub ihn in der Stadt, in Jerusalem; doch man bestattete ihn nicht in den Gräbern der Könige Israels. Und sein Sohn Hiskia wurde König an seiner Stelle.

Ahaz Reigns in Judah

1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done, 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made metal images for the Baals, 3 and he made offerings in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom and burned his sons as an offering,* according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.

Judah Defeated

5 Therefore the Lord his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force. 6 For Pekah the son of Remaliah killed 120,000 from Judah in one day, all of them men of valor, because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers. 7 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king’s son and Azrikam the commander of the palace and Elkanah the next in authority to the king. 8 The men of Israel took captive 200,000 of their relatives, women, sons, and daughters. They also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria. 9 But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded, and he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria and said to them, “Behold, because the Lord, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have killed them in a rage that has reached up to heaven. 10 And now you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem, male and female, as your slaves. Have you not sins of your own against the Lord your God? 11 Now hear me, and send back the captives from your relatives whom you have taken, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.” 12 Certain chiefs also of the men of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who were coming from the war 13 and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring upon us guilt against the Lord in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” 14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the assembly. 15 And the men who have been mentioned by name rose and took the captives, and with the spoil they clothed all who were naked among them. They clothed them, gave them sandals, provided them with food and drink, and anointed them, and carrying all the feeble among them on donkeys, they brought them to their kinsfolk at Jericho, the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria. 16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the king* of Assyria for help. 17 For the Edomites had again invaded and defeated Judah and carried away captives. 18 And the Philistines had made raids on the cities in the Shephelah and the Negeb of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages. And they settled there. 19 For the Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had made Judah act sinfully* and had been very unfaithful to the Lord. 20 So Tiglath-pileser* king of Assyria came against him and afflicted him instead of strengthening him. 21 For Ahaz took a portion from the house of the Lord and the house of the king and of the princes, and gave tribute to the king of Assyria, but it did not help him.

Ahaz’s Idolatry

22 In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz. 23 For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus that had defeated him and said, “Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and he shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 In every city of Judah he made high places to make offerings to other gods, provoking to anger the Lord, the God of his fathers. 26 Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.
