1Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east.2As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well’s mouth was large,3and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well.4Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where do you come from?” They said, “We are from Haran.”5He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”6He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well; and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep!”7He said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered together. Water the sheep and go, pasture them.”8But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.”9While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.10Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.11Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud.12And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s kinsman, and that he was Rebekah’s son, and she ran and told her father.13As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things,14and Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh!” And he stayed with him a month.15Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”16Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.17Leah’s eyes were weak,* but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.18Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”19Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.”20So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.21Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.”22So Laban gathered together all the people of the place and made a feast.23But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he went in to her.24(Laban gave* his female servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her servant.)25And in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”26Laban said, “It is not so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.27Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me another seven years.”28Jacob did so, and completed her week. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.29(Laban gave his female servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.)30So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served Laban for another seven years.
Jacob’s Children
31When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.32And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben,* for she said, “Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.”33She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon.*34Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.*35And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name Judah.* Then she ceased bearing.

يعقوب به فَدّان ارام میرسد
1يعقوب به سفر خود ادامه داد تا به ديار مشرق رسيد.2در صحرا چاهی ديد كه سه گله گوسفند كنار آن خوابيدهاند، زيرا از آن چاه، گلهها را آب میدادند. اما سنگی بزرگ بر دهانه چاه قرار داشت.3(رسم بر اين بود كه وقتی همهٔ گلهها جمع میشدند، آن سنگ را از سر چاه برمیداشتند و پس از سيراب كردن گلهها، دوباره سنگ را بر سر چاه میغلتانيدند.)4يعقوب نزد چوپانان رفت و از آنها پرسيد كه از كجا هستند. آنها گفتند كه از حران هستند.5به ايشان گفت: «آيا لابان پسر ناحور را میشناسيد؟» گفتند: «بلی، او را میشناسيم.»6يعقوب پرسيد: «حالِ او خوب است؟» گفتند: «بلی، حالش خوب است. آن هم دختر اوست كه با گلهاش میآيد.»7يعقوب گفت: «هنوز تا غروب خيلی مانده است. چرا به گوسفندها آب نمیدهيد تا دوباره بروند و بچرند؟»8جواب دادند: «تا همهٔ گلهها سر چاه نيايند ما نمیتوانيم سنگ را برداريم و گلههايمان را سيراب كنيم.»9در حالی كه اين گفتگو ادامه داشت، راحيل با گلهٔ پدرش سر رسيد، زيرا او نيز چوپان بود.10وقتی يعقوب دختر دايی خود، راحيل را ديد كه با گله لابان میآيد، سنگ را از سر چاه برداشت و گلهٔ او را سيراب نمود.11سپس يعقوب، راحيل را بوسيده، شروع به گريستن نمود!12يعقوب خود را معرفی كرد و گفت كه خويشاوند پدرش و پسر ربكاست. راحيل به محض شنيدن سخنان او، دواندوان به منزل شتافت و پدرش را باخبر كرد.13چون لابان خبر آمدن خواهرزادهٔ خود يعقوب را شنيد به استقبالش شتافت و او را در آغوش گرفته، بوسيد و به خانهٔ خود آورد. آنگاه يعقوب داستان خود را برای او شرح داد.
يعقوب، ليه و راحيل را به زنی میگيرد
14لابان به او گفت: «تو از گوشت و استخوان من هستی!» يک ماه بعد از آمدن يعقوب،15لابان به او گفت: «تو نبايد به دلیل اينكه خويشاوند من هستی برای من مجانی كار كنی. بگو چقدر مزد به تو بدهم؟»16لابان دو دختر داشت كه نام دختر بزرگ لَيه و نام دختر كوچک راحيل بود.17ليه چشمانی ضعيف داشت، اما راحيل زيبا و خوشاندام بود.18يعقوب عاشق راحيل شده بود. پس به لابان گفت: «اگر راحيل، دختر كوچكت را به همسری به من بدهی، هفت سال برای تو كار میكنم.»19لابان جواب داد: «قبول میكنم. ترجيح میدهم دخترم را به تو كه از بستگانم هستی بدهم تا به يک بيگانه.»20يعقوب برای ازدواج با راحيل هفت سال برای لابان كار كرد، ولی به قدری راحيل را دوست میداشت كه اين سالها در نظرش چند روز آمد.21آنگاه يعقوب به لابان گفت: «مدت قرارداد ما تمام شده و موقع آن رسيده است كه راحيل را به زنی بگيرم.»22لابان همهٔ مردم آنجا را دعوت كرده، ضيافتی بر پا نمود.23وقتی هوا تاريک شد، لابان دختر خود ليه را به حجله فرستاد و يعقوب با وی همبستر شد.24(لابان كنيزی به نام زلفه به ليه داد تا او را خدمت كند.)25اما صبح روز بعد، يعقوب به جای راحيل، ليه را در حجلهٔ خود يافت. پس رفته، به لابان گفت: «اين چه كاری بود كه با من كردی؟ من هفت سال برای تو كار كردم تا راحيل را به من بدهی. چرا مرا فريب دادی؟»26لابان جواب داد: «رسم ما بر اين نيست كه دختر كوچكتر را زودتر از دختر بزرگتر شوهر بدهيم.27صبر كن تا هفتهٔ عروسی ليه بگذرد، بعد راحيل را نيز به زنی بگير، مشروط بر اينكه قول بدهی هفت سال ديگر برايم كار كنی.»28يعقوب قبول كرد و لابان پس از پايان هفتهٔ عروسی ليه، دختر كوچک خود راحيل را هم به يعقوب داد.29(لابان كنيزی به نام بلهه به راحيل داد تا او را خدمت كند.)30يعقوب با راحيل نيز همبستر شد و او را بيشتر از ليه دوست میداشت و به خاطر او هفت سال ديگر برای لابان كار كرد.
فرزندان يعقوب
31وقتی خداوند ديد كه يعقوب ليه را دوست ندارد، ليه را مورد لطف خود قرار داد و او بچهدار شد، ولی راحيل نازا ماند.32آنگاه ليه حامله شد و پسری زاييد. او گفت: «خداوند مصيبت مرا ديده است و بعد از اين شوهرم مرا دوست خواهد داشت.» پس او را رئوبين (يعنی«خداوند مصيبت مرا ديده است») نام نهاد.33او بار ديگر حامله شده، پسری زاييد و گفت: «خداوند شنيد كه من مورد بیمهری قرار گرفتهام و پسر ديگری به من داد.» پس او را شمعون (يعنی«خداوند شنيد») ناميد.34ليه باز هم حامله شد و پسری زاييد و گفت: «اينک مطمئناً شوهرم به من دلبسته خواهد شد، زيرا اين سومين پسری است كه برايش زاييدهام.» پس او را لاوی (يعنی«دلبستگی») ناميد.35بار ديگر او حامله شد و پسری زاييد و گفت: «اين بار خداوند را ستايش خواهم نمود.» و او را يهودا (يعنی«ستايش») ناميد. آنگاه ليه از زاييدن باز ايستاد.
