5 “If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. 6 And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel. 7 And if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, ‘I do not wish to take her,’ 9 then his brother’s wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’ 10 And the name of his house* shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’

Wenn diese Zahl deutlich überschritten wird, dann verliert der Geschlagene, der doch euer Mitmensch* ist, vor aller Augen seine Würde.

5 Wenn Brüder nahe beieinander leben und einer von ihnen stirbt ohne männliche Nachkommen, dann muss einer seiner Brüder die Witwe zu Frau nehmen. Sie soll keinen Mann außerhalb der Familie heiraten, sondern ihren Schwager. 6 Der erste Sohn, den sie dann bekommt, gilt als Nachkomme des Verstorbenen, damit dessen Name in Israel erhalten bleibt. 7 Will der Mann jedoch seine Schwägerin nicht heiraten, dann soll sie zum ´Gerichtsplatz beim` Stadttor gehen und den führenden Männern sagen: »Mein Schwager weigert sich, den Namen seines ´verstorbenen` Bruders in Israel zu erhalten. Er will mit mir nicht die Schwagerehe eingehen!« 8 Die führenden Männer der Stadt sollen ihn vorladen und ihn zur Rede stellen. Wenn er bei seiner Meinung bleibt und öffentlich erklärt: »Ich bin nicht bereit, sie zu heiraten!«, 9 dann soll seine Schwägerin ihm vor den führenden Männern einen Schuh ausziehen, ihm ins Gesicht spucken und sagen: »So behandelt man einen Mann, der die Familie seines Bruders nicht erhalten will.« 10 Von da an wird man ihn und seine Familie in ganz Israel nur noch »die Barfüßer« nennen.

13 Ihr dürft nicht zweierlei Gewichtssteine in eurem Beutel haben, ´um beim Abwiegen zu betrügen`. 14 Genauso wenig dürft ihr in eurem Haus zweierlei Getreidemaße haben. 15 Verwendet volle und richtige Gewichtssteine und Getreidemaße. Dann werdet ihr lange in dem Land leben, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch geben will. 16 Denn der HERR verabscheut jeden, der andere betrügt.

Vernichtet die Amalekiter

17 Vergesst nicht, was die Amalekiter euch angetan haben, als ihr aus Ägypten kamt. 18 Sie griffen euch unterwegs von hinten an, als ihr müde und erschöpft wart. Ohne jede Ehrfurcht vor Gott töteten sie alle, die vor Schwäche zurückgeblieben waren. 19 Wenn ihr das Land in Besitz genommen habt, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch geben will, und er euch Ruhe verschafft hat vor allen Feinden ringsum, dann müsst ihr die Amalekiter vollständig vernichten und jede Spur von ihnen auslöschen*. Vergesst dies nicht!
