La tradición de los ancianos

1 Entonces se acercaron a Jesús unos fariseos y escribas de Jerusalem, diciendo: 2 ¿Por qué tus discípulos quebrantan la tradición de los ancianos? Porque no se lavan las manos cuando comen pan. 3 Él respondió y les dijo: ¿Por qué también vosotros quebrantáis el mandamiento de Dios por causa de vuestra tradición? 4 Porque Dios dijo: Honra al padre y a la madre; y: El que maldiga al padre o a la madre, muera irremisiblemente. 5 Pero vosotros decís: Cualquiera que diga al padre o a la madre: Es Corbán todo aquello con que pudiera ayudarte, 6 de ningún modo tendrá que honrar a su padre. Así habéis invalidado la palabra de Dios por vuestra tradición. 7 ¡Hipócritas! Bien profetizó de vosotros Isaías, cuando dijo: 8 Este pueblo me honra con los labios, Pero su corazón está lejos de mí. 9 Y en vano me adoran, Enseñando como doctrinas preceptos de hombres. 10 Y llamando a la muchedumbre, les dijo: Oíd y entended: 11 No es lo que entra por la boca lo que contamina al hombre, sino lo que sale de la boca, eso contamina al hombre. 12 Entonces acercándose los discípulos, le dicen: ¿Sabes que los fariseos se ofendieron cuando oyeron la palabra? 13 Él respondió y dijo: Toda planta que no plantó mi Padre celestial será desarraigada. 14 Dejadlos, son ciegos guías de ciegos: si un ciego guía a otro ciego, ambos caerán en el hoyo.

Lo que contamina al hombre

15 Tomando la palabra, Pedro le dijo: Acláranos la parábola. 16 Él respondió: ¿También vosotros estáis aún sin entendimiento? 17 ¿No entendéis que todo lo que entra en la boca va al vientre y es echado en la letrina? 18 Pero las cosas que salen de la boca provienen del corazón, y ésas contaminan al hombre. 19 Porque del corazón provienen malos pensamientos, homicidios, adulterios, fornicaciones, robos, falsos testimonios, difamaciones. 20 Estas cosas son las que contaminan al hombre, pero el comer con manos no lavadas no contamina al hombre.

La fe de la extranjera

21 Partiendo de allí, Jesús se fue a las regiones de Tiro y Sidón. 22 Y he aquí una mujer cananea que había salido de aquellos confines, clamaba diciendo: ¡Ten compasión de mí, Señor, hijo de David! Mi hija está horriblemente endemoniada. 23 Pero Él no le respondió palabra. Entonces, acercándose sus discípulos, le rogaban, diciendo: Despídela, que grita detrás de nosotros. 24 Él respondiendo, dijo: No fui enviado sino a las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel. 25 Pero ella, acercándose, se postraba ante Él, diciendo: ¡Señor, ayúdame! 26 Él respondió y dijo: No está bien tomar el pan de los hijos y echarlo a los perros. 27 Pero ella dijo: Sí, Señor, pero aun los perros comen las migajas que caen de la mesa de sus amos. 28 Entonces respondiendo Jesús, le dijo: ¡Oh mujer, grande es tu fe! Hágase contigo como quieres. Y su hija quedó sana desde aquella hora.

Muchas sanidades

29 Y pasando de allí, Jesús llegó junto al mar de Galilea, y subiendo al monte, se sentó allí. 30 Y se acercaron a Él grandes multitudes, que traían consigo cojos, lisiados, ciegos, mudos, y muchos otros, y los pusieron a sus pies, y los sanó. 31 Y la muchedumbre se asombró al ver a los mudos hablando, a los lisiados sanos, a los cojos andando, y a los ciegos viendo. Y glorificaron al Dios de Israel.

Segunda multiplicación de los panes y los peces

32 Llamando entonces Jesús a sus discípulos, dijo: Siento compasión por la muchedumbre, porque ya hace tres días que están conmigo y no tienen qué comer, y no quiero enviarlos en ayunas, no sea que desfallezcan en el camino. 33 Le dicen los discípulos: ¿De dónde hemos de conseguir aquí en un despoblado tantos panes como para saciar a tan gran muchedumbre? 34 Jesús les dice: ¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete, y unos pocos pececillos. 35 Y mandó a la muchedumbre que se recostara sobre la tierra. 36 Y tomando los siete panes y los peces, dio gracias y los partió, e iba dando a los discípulos, y los discípulos a las multitudes. 37 Y comieron todos y fueron saciados, y de lo sobrante de los trozos recogieron siete canastas llenas. 38 Y los que habían comido eran cuatro mil hombres, aparte de las mujeres y los niños. 39 Y despedida la muchedumbre, subió a la barca y llegó a las proximidades de Magadán.

Traditions and Commandments

1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”* 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word* of God. 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 8 “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

What Defiles a Person

10 And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides.* And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?* 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.*

Jesus Heals Many

29 Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 31 so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
