1 Men nu lover vi højt og helligt, at vi vil adlyde dig. Vi indgår en urokkelig pagt og lader alle vores ledere, præster og levitter bekræfte den med deres underskrift.”

2 Den højtidelige pagt blev underskrevet af Nehemias og de ledende præster Zidkija, Seraja, Azarja, Jirmeja, Pashhur, Amarja, Malkija, Hattush, Shebanja, Malluk, Harim, Meremot, Obadja, Daniel, Ginneton, Baruk, Meshullam, Abija, Mijjamin, Ma’azja, Bilgaj og Shemaja. 10 Følgende levitter skrev også under: Jeshua, søn af Azanja; Binnu fra Henadads klan; Kadmiel, Shebanja, Hodija, Kelita, Pelaja, Hanan, Mika, Rehob, Hashabja, Zakkur, Sherebja, Shebanja, Hodija, Bani og Beninu. 15 Følgende slægtsoverhoveder skrev under: Parosh, Pahat-Moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani, Bunni, Azgad, Bebaj, Adonija, Bigvaj, Adin, Ater, Hizkija, Azzur, Hodija, Hashum, Betzaj, Harif, Anatot, Nebaj, Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir, Meshezabel, Zadok, Jaddua, Pelatja, Hanan, Anaja, Hoshea, Hananja, Hasshub, Hallohesh, Pilha, Shobek, Rehum, Hashabna, Ma’aseja, Ahija, Hanan, Anan, Malluk, Harim og Ba’ana. 29 Resten af folket, inklusive de øvrige præster og levitter, tempelvagterne, tempelsangerne og tempeltjenerne, alle, som havde skilt sig ud fra de fremmede i landet for at tjene Herren sammen med deres koner og børn, ja alle der kunne fatte lovens ord, 30 svor, at de ville adlyde Guds lov med alle dens befalinger og forskrifter, sådan som den var overleveret gennem Moses. De aflagde følgende specifikke løfter: 31 „Vi lover, at vi ikke vil bortgifte vores døtre til ikke-jødiske mænd, og vi vil ikke lade vores sønner gifte sig med ikke-jødiske kvinder. 32 Vi lover, at vi ikke vil købe noget fra de fremmede i landet på sabbatten eller på andre helligdage, hvis de kommer med deres korn eller andre varer for at sælge dem. Vi lover, at vi hvert syvende år vil lade vores marker ligge brak, og vi vil ikke inddrive gæld i det år. 33 Vi lover at pålægge os selv en årlig tempelskat på 1/3 shekel til vedligeholdelsen af vores Guds tempel, 34 til de hellige brød, de daglige afgrødeofre og brændofre, ofrene på sabbatten, nymånefesterne og de årlige højtider, helliggaver og syndofre til soning for folkets synd, ja til al tjenesten i templet. 35 Vi lover også, at vi ved lodtrækning år efter år vil udpege hvilken slægt blandt præsterne, levitterne eller folket, der skal have ansvar for, at der altid er brænde til Herrens alter, sådan som det er foreskrevet i loven. 36 Vi lover, at vi år efter år vil bringe den første del af korn- og frugthøsten til templet som gave. 37 Vi lover at løskøbe vores førstefødte sønner og vores førstefødte husdyr, som loven foreskriver, og give beløbet eller dyrene til præsterne, der gør tjeneste i vores Guds tempel. 38 Vi vil også give afkald på det første mel, vi maler, de første frugter af alle slags træer, og den første del af vinen og olivenolien. Vi vil bringe det som gave til præsterne i Guds hus. Vi vil give en tiendedel af alle vores afgrøder til levitterne, for det er dem, der skal modtage tienden over hele landet. 39 En præst skal være til stede, når de indsamler tienden. Levitterne skal selv give tiende af den tiende, de modtager, og de skal bringe deres tiendegaver til forrådskamrene i Guds hus. På den måde vil både folket og levitterne give tiende. Og levitternes tiende af kornet, vinen og olivenolien skal bringes til templets forrådskammer, hvor de hellige kar findes. Det er til præsterne, tempelvagterne og tempelsangerne. Vi er fast besluttede på ikke at forsømme vores Guds hus.”

The Obligations of the Covenant

28 “The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who have separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, their daughters, all who have knowledge and understanding, 29 join with their brothers, their nobles, and enter into a curse and an oath to walk in God’s Law that was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord and his rules and his statutes. 30 We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons. 31 And if the peoples of the land bring in goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day. And we will forego the crops of the seventh year and the exaction of every debt. 32 “We also take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly a third part of a shekel* for the service of the house of our God: 33 for the showbread, the regular grain offering, the regular burnt offering, the Sabbaths, the new moons, the appointed feasts, the holy things, and the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God. 34 We, the priests, the Levites, and the people, have likewise cast lots for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God, as it is written in the Law. 35 We obligate ourselves to bring the firstfruits of our ground and the firstfruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord; 36 also to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God, the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, as it is written in the Law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks; 37 and to bring the first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil, to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our ground, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our towns where we labor. 38 And the priest, the son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes. And the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse. 39 For the people of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the contribution of grain, wine, and oil to the chambers, where the vessels of the sanctuary are, as well as the priests who minister, and the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not neglect the house of our God.”
