1Nach diesen Ereignissen geschah es unter der Regierung Artasastas, des Königs von Persien, dass Esra, der Sohn Serajas, des Sohnes Asarjas, des Sohnes Hilkias,2des Sohnes Schallums, des Sohnes Zadoks, des Sohnes Achitubs,3des Sohnes Amarjas, des Sohnes Asarjas, des Sohnes Merajots,4des Sohnes Serachjas, des Sohnes Ussis, des Sohnes Bukkis,5des Sohnes Abischuas, des Sohnes des Pinehas, des Sohnes Eleasars, des Sohnes Aarons, des obersten Priesters —,6dass dieser Esra von Babel heraufzog [nach Jerusalem]. Und er war ein Schriftgelehrter, wohlbewandert im Gesetz Moses, das der HERR, der Gott Israels, gegeben hatte. Und der König gab ihm alles, was er erbat, weil die Hand des HERRN, seines Gottes, über ihm war.7Und etliche von den Kindern Israels und von den Priestern und Leviten, von den Sängern und Torhütern und Tempeldienern zogen mit ihm nach Jerusalem hinauf, im siebten Jahr des Königs Artasasta.8Und er kam im fünften Monat nach Jerusalem, im siebten Jahr des Königs.9Denn am ersten Tag des ersten Monats begann der Hinaufzug von Babel, und am ersten Tag des fünften Monats kam er in Jerusalem an, weil die gute Hand seines Gottes über ihm war.10Denn Esra hatte sein Herz darauf gerichtet, das Gesetz des HERRN zu erforschen und zu tun, und in Israel Gesetz und Recht zu lehren.
Die Vollmacht des Königs Artasasta für Esra
11Und dies ist die Abschrift des Briefes, den der König Artasasta dem Priester Esra gab, dem Schriftgelehrten, der gelehrt war in den Worten der Gebote des HERRN und seiner Satzungen für Israel:12»Artasasta, der König der Könige, an Esra, den Priester, den vollkommenen Schriftgelehrten im Gesetz des Gottes des Himmels, ausgefertigt und so weiter.13Es ist von mir befohlen worden, dass jeder mit dir ziehen soll, der in meinem Reich vom Volk Israel und seinen Priestern und Leviten willens ist, nach Jerusalem zu gehen.14Weil du von dem König und seinen sieben Räten gesandt bist, um eine Untersuchung über Juda und Jerusalem durchzuführen nach dem weisen Gesetz deines Gottes, das in deiner Hand ist,15und um das Silber und das Gold hinzubringen, das der König und seine Räte dem Gott Israels, dessen Wohnung in Jerusalem ist, freiwillig gegeben haben,16dazu alles Silber und Gold, das du in der ganzen Provinz von Babel bekommen wirst, samt der Gabe, die das Volk und die Priester freiwillig geben für das Haus ihres Gottes in Jerusalem,17deshalb kaufe gewissenhaft für dieses Geld Stiere, Widder, Lämmer samt den dazugehörigen Speisopfern und Trankopfern, und opfere sie auf dem Altar bei dem Haus eures Gottes in Jerusalem.18Und was dir und deinen Brüdern mit dem übrigen Silber und Gold zu tun gut erscheint, das tut nach dem Willen eures Gottes!19Und die Geräte, die dir übergeben werden für den Dienst im Haus deines Gottes, die sollst du vollständig abliefern vor Gott in Jerusalem.20Und was sonst noch für das Haus deines Gottes notwendig sein wird, was du ausgeben musst, sollst du aus der Schatzkammer des Königs ausgeben.21Und ich, der König Artasasta, habe allen Schatzmeistern jenseits des Stromes befohlen, dass alles, was Esra, der Priester und Schriftgelehrte im Gesetz des Gottes des Himmels, von euch fordern wird, pünktlich gegeben werden soll,22bis zu 100 Talenten Silber und bis zu 100 Kor Weizen und bis zu 100 Bat Wein und bis zu 100 Bat Öl und unbegrenzt Salz.23Alles, was nach dem Befehl des Gottes des Himmels ist, das soll für das Haus des Gottes des Himmels mit großer Sorgfalt ausgeführt werden, damit nicht ein Zorn über das Reich des Königs und seiner Söhne kommt.24Ferner sollt ihr wissen, dass ihr nicht berechtigt seid, Steuern, Zoll und Weggeld irgendeinem Priester, Leviten, Sänger, Torhüter, Tempeldiener und Diener im Haus dieses Gottes aufzuerlegen.25Du aber, Esra, setze nach dem weisen Gesetz deines Gottes, das in deiner Hand ist, Richter und Rechtspfleger ein, die alles Volk richten sollen, das jenseits des Stromes ist, alle, welche die Gesetze deines Gottes kennen; und wer sie nicht kennt, den sollt ihr sie lehren.26Und jeder, der das Gesetz deines Gottes und das Gesetz des Königs nicht tun wird, über den soll gewissenhaft Gericht gehalten werden, es sei zum Tode oder zur Verbannung, zur Geldbuße oder zum Gefängnis!«27Gelobt sei der HERR, der Gott unserer Väter, der dies dem König ins Herz gegeben hat, um das Haus des HERRN in Jerusalem zu verherrlichen,28und der mir Gnade zugewandt hat vor dem König und seinen Räten und vor allen mächtigen Fürsten des Königs! Und so fasste ich Mut, weil die Hand des HERRN, meines Gottes, über mir war, und versammelte die Häupter von Israel, damit sie mit mir hinaufzögen.

1Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,2The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,3The son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,4The son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,5The son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest:6This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.7And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.8And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.9For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.10For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it , and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.11Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of his statutes to Israel.12Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace , and at such a time.13I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.14Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;15And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,16And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:17That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.18And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.19The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.20And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king' treasure house.21And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,22Unto an hundred talents of silver, and to an hundred measures of wheat, and to an hundred baths of wine, and to an hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much .23Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?24Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.25And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.26And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.27Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king' heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem:28And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king' mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
