1Als nun alle Könige der Amoriter, die diesseits des Jordan gegen Westen wohnten, und alle Könige der Kanaaniter am Meer hörten, wie der HERR das Wasser des Jordan vor den Söhnen Israels ausgetrocknet hatte, bis sie hinübergezogen waren, da verzagte ihr Herz, und es blieb kein Mut mehr in ihnen vor den Söhnen Israels.2Zu der Zeit sprach der HERR zu Josua: Mache dir scharfe Messer und beschneide die Söhne Israels wiederum, zum zweiten Mal!3Da machte sich Josua scharfe Messer und beschnitt die Söhne Israels auf dem Hügel Aralot.4Und das ist der Grund, warum Josua sie beschnitt: Alles Volk männlichen Geschlechts, das aus Ägypten gezogen war, alle Kriegsleute waren in der Wüste auf dem Weg gestorben, nachdem sie aus Ägypten gezogen waren.5Das ganze Volk, das ausgezogen war, war zwar beschnitten; aber das ganze Volk, das auf dem Weg in der Wüste geboren war, nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten, war nicht beschnitten worden.6Denn die Kinder Israels wanderten 40 Jahre lang in der Wüste, bis das ganze Volk der Kriegsleute umgekommen war, die aus Ägypten gezogen waren, weil sie der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorcht hatten; wie denn der HERR ihnen geschworen hatte, dass sie das Land nicht sehen sollten, von dem der HERR ihren Vätern geschworen hatte, dass er es uns geben würde — ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließt.7Ihre Söhne nun, die Er an ihrer Stelle erweckt hatte, die beschnitt Josua; denn sie waren unbeschnitten, weil man sie auf dem Weg nicht beschnitten hatte.8Als nun das ganze Volk beschnitten war, blieben sie an ihrem Ort im Lager, bis sie heil wurden.9Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Heute habe ich die Schande Ägyptens von euch abgewälzt! Darum wird jener Ort Gilgal* genannt bis zu diesem Tag.
Die Passahfeier. Der Fürst über das Heer des Herrn
10Während nun die Kinder Israels sich in Gilgal lagerten, hielten sie das Passah am vierzehnten Tag des Monats, am Abend, in den Ebenen von Jericho.11Und am Tag nach dem Passah aßen sie von dem Getreide des Landes, nämlich ungesäuertes Brot und geröstetes Korn, an ebendiesem Tag.12Und das Manna hörte auf am folgenden Tag, als sie von dem Getreide des Landes aßen; und es gab für die Kinder Israels kein Manna mehr, sondern in jenem Jahr aßen sie vom Ertrag des Landes Kanaan.13Es geschah aber, als Josua bei Jericho war, da erhob er seine Augen und sah sich um; und siehe, ein Mann stand ihm gegenüber, der hatte ein blankes Schwert in seiner Hand. Und Josua ging zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Bist du für uns oder für unsere Feinde?14Er aber sprach: Nein, sondern ich bin der Fürst über das Heer des HERRN; jetzt bin ich gekommen! Da fiel Josua auf sein Angesicht zur Erde und betete an und sprach zu ihm: Was redet mein Herr zu seinem Knecht?15Und der Fürst über das Heer des HERRN sprach zu Josua: Ziehe deine Schuhe aus von deinen Füßen; denn der Ort, auf dem du stehst, ist heilig! The New Generation Circumcised
1As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.2At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.”3So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.*4And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt.5Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised.6For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.7So it was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.8When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed.9And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called Gilgal* to this day.
First Passover in Canaan
10While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho.11And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain.12And the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
The Commander of the Lord’s Army
13When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”14And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped* and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”15And the commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
