1Und Mose berief ganz Israel und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt alles gesehen, was der HERR im Land Ägypten vor euren Augen dem Pharao und allen seinen Knechten und seinem ganzen Land getan hat,2die großen Prüfungen, die deine Augen gesehen haben, jene großen Zeichen und Wunder.3Und der HERR hat euch bis zum heutigen Tag noch kein verständiges Herz gegeben, Augen, die sehen, und Ohren, die hören.4Ich habe euch 40 Jahre lang in der Wüste geführt; eure Kleider sind an euch nicht zerlumpt, und der Schuh an deinem Fuß ist nicht abgenutzt.5Ihr habt kein Brot gegessen und weder Wein noch starkes Getränk getrunken, damit ihr erkennt, dass ich der HERR, euer Gott, bin.6Und als ihr an diesen Ort kamt, da zogen Sihon, der König von Hesbon, und Og, der König von Baschan, uns entgegen, um mit uns zu kämpfen; und wir schlugen sie.7Und wir nahmen ihr Land ein und gaben es den Rubenitern und Gaditern und dem halben Stamm Manasse zum Erbteil.8So bewahrt nun die Worte dieses Bundes und tut sie, damit ihr Gelingen habt in allem, was ihr tut!9Ihr alle steht heute vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott — eure Häupter, eure Stämme, eure Ältesten und eure Vorsteher, alle Männer Israels;10eure Kinder, eure Frauen und dein Fremdling, der inmitten deines Lagers ist, von deinem Holzhauer bis zu deinem Wasserschöpfer,11um einzutreten in den Bund des HERRN, deines Gottes, und in seine Eidverpflichtung, die der HERR, dein Gott, heute mit dir abschließt,12damit er dich heute bestätige als sein Volk, und dass er dein Gott sei, wie er zu dir geredet hat, und wie er es deinen Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen hat.13Denn ich schließe diesen Bund und diese Eidverpflichtung nicht mit euch allein,14sondern sowohl mit dem, der heute hier mit uns steht vor dem HERRN, unserem Gott, als auch mit dem, der heute nicht hier bei uns ist.
Folgen einer Abwendung von Gott
15Denn ihr wisst ja, wie wir im Land Ägypten gewohnt haben und wie wir mitten durch die Heidenvölker gezogen sind, durch deren Gebiet ihr gezogen seid;16und ihr habt ihre Gräuel gesehen und ihre Götzen aus Holz und Stein, Silber und Gold, die bei ihnen sind.17[Darum hütet euch,] dass nicht etwa ein Mann oder eine Frau, eine Sippe oder ein Stamm unter euch sei, dessen Herz sich heute von dem HERRN, unserem Gott, abwendet, und der hingeht, den Göttern jener Nationen zu dienen; dass nicht etwa eine Wurzel unter euch sei, die Gift und Wermut trägt;18und dass keiner, wenn er die Worte dieser Eidverpflichtung hört, sich dennoch in seinem Herzen glücklich preist und spricht: »Ich werde Frieden haben, wenn ich auch in der Verstocktheit meines Herzens wandle!« — sodass dann das bewässerte Land mitsamt dem trockenen hinweggerafft würde.19Denn der HERR wird nicht gewillt sein, einem solchen zu vergeben, sondern dann wird der HERR seinen Zorn und seinen Eifer rauchen lassen über einen solchen Mann, und es wird auf ihm der ganze Fluch ruhen, der in diesem Buch geschrieben steht; und der HERR wird seinen Namen unter dem Himmel austilgen;20und der HERR wird ihn aus allen Stämmen Israels zum Unglück absondern, gemäß allen Flüchen des Bundes, die in dem Buch dieses Gesetzes geschrieben sind.21Und dann werden das zukünftige Geschlecht eurer Kinder, das nach euch aufkommen wird, und die Fremden, die aus fernen Ländern kommen, fragen — wenn sie die Plagen dieses Landes und die Krankheiten sehen, die der HERR ihm auferlegt hat,22und wie er dieses ganze Land mit Schwefel und Salz verbrannt hat, dass es nicht besät werden kann und nichts hervorbringt, dass kein Kraut darauf wächst, gleichwie Sodom, Gomorra, Adama und Zeboim umgekehrt worden sind, die der HERR in seinem Zorn und Grimm umgekehrt hat —,23ja, alle diese Völker werden fragen: »Warum hat der HERR so an diesem Land gehandelt? Was bedeutet diese gewaltige Zornglut?«24Dann wird man antworten: »Weil sie den Bund des HERRN, des Gottes ihrer Väter, verlassen haben, den er mit ihnen schloss, als er sie aus dem Land Ägypten führte;25und weil sie hingegangen sind und anderen Göttern gedient und sie angebetet haben, Götter, die sie nicht kannten und die er ihnen nicht zugeteilt hatte.26Darum entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN über dieses Land, sodass er den ganzen Fluch über es kommen ließ, der in diesem Buch geschrieben steht!27Und der HERR hat sie aus ihrem Land herausgerissen im Zorn und im Grimm und in großem Unwillen und hat sie in ein anderes Land geworfen, wie es heute der Fall ist!«28Was verborgen ist, das steht bei dem HERRN, unserem Gott; was aber geoffenbart ist, das ist ewiglich für uns und unsere Kinder bestimmt, damit wir alle Worte dieses Gesetzes tun.

The Covenant Renewed in Moab
1* These are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant that he had made with them at Horeb.2* And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land,3the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders.4But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.5I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet.6You have not eaten bread, and you have not drunk wine or strong drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.7And when you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out against us to battle, but we defeated them.8We took their land and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites.9Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper* in all that you do.10“You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God: the heads of your tribes,* your elders, and your officers, all the men of Israel,11your little ones, your wives, and the sojourner who is in your camp, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water,12so that you may enter into the sworn covenant of the Lord your God, which the Lord your God is making with you today,13that he may establish you today as his people, and that he may be your God, as he promised you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.14It is not with you alone that I am making this sworn covenant,15but with whoever is standing here with us today before the Lord our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.16“You know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed.17And you have seen their detestable things, their idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold, which were among them.18Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,19one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.’ This will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike.20The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the Lord and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and the curses written in this book will settle upon him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven.21And the Lord will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.22And the next generation, your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, will say, when they see the afflictions of that land and the sicknesses with which the Lord has made it sick—23the whole land burned out with brimstone and salt, nothing sown and nothing growing, where no plant can sprout, an overthrow like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger and wrath—24all the nations will say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What caused the heat of this great anger?’25Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,26and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them.27Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, bringing upon it all the curses written in this book,28and the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger and fury and great wrath, and cast them into another land, as they are this day.’29“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
