L'incarnation de la Parole

1 Au commencement, la Parole* existait déjà. La Parole était avec Dieu et la Parole était Dieu. 2 Elle était au commencement avec Dieu. 3 Tout a été fait par elle et rien de ce qui a été fait n'a été fait sans elle. 4 En elle il y avait la vie, et cette vie était la lumière des êtres humains. 5 La lumière brille dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres ne l'ont pas accueillie. 6 Il y eut un homme envoyé par Dieu; son nom était Jean*. 7 Il vint comme témoin, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière afin que tous croient par lui. 8 Il n'était pas la lumière, mais il vint pour rendre témoignage à la lumière. 9 Cette lumière était la vraie lumière qui, en venant dans le monde, éclaire tout être humain. 10 Elle était dans le monde et le monde a été fait par elle, pourtant le monde ne l'a pas reconnue. 11 Elle est venue chez les siens, et les siens ne l'ont pas accueillie. 12 Mais à tous ceux qui l'ont acceptée, à ceux qui croient en son nom, elle a donné le droit de devenir enfants de Dieu, 13 puisqu'ils sont nés non du fait de la nature, ni par une volonté humaine, ni par la volonté d'un mari, mais qu'ils sont nés de Dieu. 14 Et la Parole s'est faite homme, elle a habité parmi nous, pleine de grâce et de vérité, et nous avons contemplé sa gloire, une gloire comme celle du Fils unique venu du Père. 15 Jean lui a rendu témoignage et s'est écrié: «C'est celui à propos duquel j'ai dit: ‘Celui qui vient après moi m'a précédé, car il était avant moi.’» 16 Nous avons tous reçu de sa plénitude, et grâce sur grâce. 17 En effet, la loi a été donnée à travers Moïse, mais la grâce et la vérité sont venues à travers Jésus-Christ. 18 Personne n'a jamais vu Dieu; Dieu le Fils unique, qui est dans l'intimité du Père, est celui qui l'a fait connaître.

Témoignage de Jean-Baptiste sur Jésus

19 Voici le témoignage de Jean lorsque les Juifs envoyèrent de Jérusalem des prêtres et des Lévites pour lui demander: «Toi, qui es-tu?» 20 Il déclara et sans restriction affirma: «Moi, je ne suis pas le Messie*.» 21 Ils lui demandèrent: «Qui es-tu donc? Es-tu Elie?» Et il dit: «Je ne le suis pas.» «Es-tu le prophète?» Et il répondit: «Non.» 22 Ils lui dirent alors: «Qui es-tu? Nous devons donner une réponse à ceux qui nous ont envoyés! Que dis-tu de toi-même?» 23 «Moi, dit-il, je suis la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: ‘Rendez le chemin du Seigneur droit’*, comme l'a dit le prophète Esaïe.» 24 Ceux qui avaient été envoyés étaient des pharisiens*. 25 Ils lui posèrent encore cette question: «Pourquoi donc baptises-tu, si tu n'es ni le Messie, ni Elie, ni le prophète?» 26 Jean leur répondit: «Moi, je baptise d'eau, mais au milieu de vous se trouve quelqu'un que vous ne connaissez pas. 27 Il vient après moi [mais il m'a précédé,] et je ne suis pas digne de détacher la courroie de ses sandales.» 28 Cela se passait à Béthanie, de l'autre côté du Jourdain, où Jean baptisait. 29 Le lendemain, il vit Jésus s'approcher de lui et dit: «Voici l'Agneau* de Dieu qui enlève le péché du monde. 30 C'est celui à propos duquel j'ai dit: ‘Après moi vient un homme qui m'a précédé, car il existait avant moi.’ 31 Pour ma part, je ne le connaissais pas, mais c'est afin de le faire connaître à Israël que je suis venu baptiser d'eau.» 32 Jean rendit aussi ce témoignage: «J'ai vu l'Esprit descendre du ciel comme une colombe et s'arrêter sur lui. 33 Je ne le connaissais pas, mais celui qui m'a envoyé baptiser d'eau m'a dit: ‘Celui sur qui tu verras l'Esprit descendre et s'arrêter, c'est lui qui baptise du Saint-Esprit.’ 34 Et moi, j'ai vu et j'atteste qu'il est le Fils de Dieu.» 35 Le lendemain, Jean était encore là avec deux de ses disciples. 36 Il vit Jésus passer et dit: «Voici l'Agneau de Dieu.» 37 Les deux disciples l'entendirent prononcer ces paroles et suivirent Jésus. 38 Jésus se retourna et, voyant qu'ils le suivaient, il leur dit: «Que cherchez-vous?» Ils lui répondirent: «Rabbi – ce qui signifie maître –, où habites-tu?» 39 «Venez, leur dit-il, et voyez.» Ils y allèrent [donc], virent où il habitait et restèrent avec lui ce jour-là. C'était environ quatre heures de l'après-midi. 40 André, le frère de Simon Pierre, était l'un des deux qui avaient entendu les paroles de Jean et qui avaient suivi Jésus. 41 Il rencontra d'abord son frère Simon et lui dit: «Nous avons trouvé le Messie», ce qui correspond à Christ. 42 Il le conduisit vers Jésus. Jésus le regarda et dit: «Tu es Simon, fils de Jonas, tu seras appelé Céphas», ce qui signifie Pierre. 43 Le lendemain, Jésus décida de se rendre en Galilée. Il rencontra Philippe et lui dit: «Suis-moi.» 44 Philippe était de Bethsaïda, la ville d'André et de Pierre. 45 Philippe rencontra Nathanaël et lui dit: «Nous avons trouvé celui que Moïse a décrit dans la loi et dont les prophètes ont parlé: Jésus de Nazareth, fils de Joseph.» 46 Nathanaël lui dit: «Peut-il sortir quelque chose de bon de Nazareth?» Philippe lui répondit: «Viens et vois.» 47 Jésus vit Nathanaël s'approcher de lui et dit de lui: «Voici vraiment un Israélite en qui il n'y a pas de ruse.» 48 «D'où me connais-tu?» lui dit Nathanaël. Jésus lui répondit: «Avant que Philippe t'appelle, quand tu étais sous le figuier, je t'ai vu.» 49 Nathanaël répondit: «Maître, tu es le Fils de Dieu, tu es le roi d'Israël.» 50 Jésus lui répondit: «Parce que je t'ai dit que je t'ai vu sous le figuier, tu crois? Tu verras de plus grandes choses que celles-ci.» 51 Il ajouta: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous verrez [désormais] le ciel ouvert et les anges de Dieu monter et descendre au-dessus du Fils de l'homme*.»

The Word became flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome* it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, ‘This is the one I spoke about when I said, “He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.” ’) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No-one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and* is in the closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist denies being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders* in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ 21 They asked him, ‘Then who are you? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the Prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ 22 Finally they said, ‘Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, ‘I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord.” ’ 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, ‘Why then do you baptise if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?’ 26 ‘I baptise with* water,’ John replied, ‘but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’ 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.

John testifies about Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.” 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptising with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.’ 32 Then John gave this testimony: ‘I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptise with water told me, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptise with the Holy Spirit.” 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.’*

John’s disciples follow Jesus

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God!’ 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning round, Jesus saw them following and asked, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi’ (which means ‘Teacher’), ‘where are you staying?’ 39 ‘Come,’ he replied, ‘and you will see.’ So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when translated, is Peter*).

Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’ 46 ‘Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’ Nathanael asked. ‘Come and see,’ said Philip. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, ‘Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.’ 48 ‘How do you know me?’ Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, ‘I saw you while you were still under the fig-tree before Philip called you.’ 49 Then Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.’ 50 Jesus said, ‘You believe* because I told you I saw you under the fig-tree. You will see greater things than that.’ 51 He then added, ‘Very truly I tell you,* you* will see “heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on” the Son of Man.’
